I know there's no answer for this, I know... but what is cryptic Merle
there is an answer! there are several! i would be thrilled to offer some sparknotes but i am apologizing in advance because this is going to be confusing... a) it's a question about colour genetics and b) it's a question about the most confusing possible gene. i will try to leave out as much bs as possible.
merle is determined at the M locus. the locus (position on the chromosome) hosts a pair of alleles, one inherited from each parent.
dominant genes are represented by capital letters (M), recessives by lowercase letters (m). in this case: M means merle, m means no merle. "normal" merles, like Dune, have one copy of the merle allele and one copy of the no-merle allele. Dune is Mm.
merle is a funky gene and merles are like snowflakes; no two are exactly alike.* we've known for a long time that that single M can cause a lot of completely different patterns, we just weren't sure why. for instance, here are a selection of Mm dogs:
some have lots of big bold patches, some have little cheetah spots. some have very dark base colours, some are very pale. it's a grab bag of options all caused by a single, highly mutable gene. some dogs get even weirder: they can get white patches inside their merle patches! you can get big dilute patches on dogs with otherwise normal pigment! (Dune is one of these, i've circled his dilute patches on a puppy photo below.)
the first two dogs (with the dilute, dark, light, and white spots evenly dispersed) are referred to as "tweed" or "harlequin" merles... and now we get to the fun one. some dogs have dark patches so large and so extreme that they're barely even merle anymore. can you spot the merle patches on these dogs?
traditionally, we've called this cryptic (or phantom) merle. it's dangerous because if someone didn't notice that the dog was merle and chose to breed it to another merle, you would risk puppies with two copies of the dominant merle gene. MM is associated with high white and eye/ear defects, often causing blindness and deafness.
so now that you know the original use of the term "cryptic merle", i'm going to hop over to part ii to explain why it's inaccurate.
merle, it turns out, has more going on that just a simple dominant/recessive (like a lot of other genes!). every M allele has a certain number of base pairs (which i am not going to explain, for economy) and the number of base pairs effects the expression of the gene.
i'm going to use the base pair outline provided by paw print genetics (since that's who Dune is tested through). none of these numbers are hard and fast. different labs will have different bp scales.
M (typical merle) - 265-269 bp
M (tweed/harlequin) - 270-280 bp
Dune is probably patterned the way he is because he is at the high end of "typical" merling—his M allele has a length of 269 bp. so what about allele lengths that don't fall into the ranges i've shared here? they're the lower ones.
a merle with an M allele length of 247-264 results in a pattern we call "atypical merle". these dogs are muted with fewer defined patches and often a "washed-out" sort of look that is different from true dilution.
(you may recognize this pattern if you're a follower of fellow dogblr @theborzoiarebackintown and have seen her aussie, Georgia)
the atypicals are neat and a whole other can of worms in terms of misidentification but we're interested in what happens when we drop the length of that allele by even more base pairs—because when we get down to an allele length of 200-246 bp we finally get to see a true cryptic merle.
this dog is Mm, just like Dune, but you can see that his M allele is written "Mc". The c stands for cryptic! That M allele is only 210 bp long, resulting in a dog who not only does not look like a merle... but whose genetics won't behave like a merle's, either. check this out:
this dog has not one but TWO copies of the merle gene and they're even longer than the dog above. and yet he's not merle, nor does he look like he's got a ton of extra white or any physical defects, so what gives? didn't i just tell you one (1) post ago that that's the fate of many (even most) MM puppies?
yes and no.
with true cryptic merles, the allele length is so short that the gene does not express like regular merle genetically OR phenotypically! for this reason, there are cryptic merles who can safely be bred to typical (or atypical) merles.
but do you remember what i said in the last post about the merle gene being highly mutable? that means likely to mutate. and sometimes the merle gene's instability means that its allele length will change from cell-to-cell (resulting in mosaicism) or one generation to the next! it's also more likely that the allele length will increase than decrease so generations of cryptic dogs could, conceivably, start to produce more typical patterns—and there is a slim chance that certain cryptic merles can produce traditional double merle puppies when bred to a typical merle stud.
all of this is why colour testing is so important in any breed that comes in merle, and especially in aussies where we see such massive pattern variation! it is also why people will fight each other to the death about what is and isn't safe to breed, especially if they don't have all the facts.

After a large dog “trained” with methods like his bit me in the face without warning, I’m just glad it wasn’t a person that got killed, tbh.
I’m currently lamenting the fact that people are inevitably going to interpret this as “not even a famous dog trainer can control pit bulls!!!!” and not “Cesar Milan is a hack who doesn’t know what he’s doing”.
Cesar Milan’s methods are infamous for backfiring - they rely on the completely bullshit idea of “alpha wolves” and dogs owners needing to make the dog associate them with discipline and strength instead of comfort and safety. It’s essentially about teaching the dog that its owner is an authority figure, not a family member. Pit bulls have genetic tendencies that make them susceptible to developing anxiety problems and, in the worst case scenario, canine PTSD. Discipline focused training can make that worse, which leads to aggressive behavior. I’m not a professional dog trainer or anything, I’m just autistic and obsessed with learning about animal behavior, and even I know “The Dog Whisperer” is and always has been a dangerous hack.
Remember everyone. The lesson to take away from this is “Cesar Milan is a hack fraud”, not “Pitbulls are inherently dangerous and must be exterminated”

one of the perils of bringing your dog to a non-dog job is that you will have people who know very little about dogs talking your ear off on the topic at every turn. twice this week i have had men tell me that Dune looks like he wants to bite them. today's conversation went:
customer: he's giving me the eye like he doesn't know if he wants bite me or not.
me: there are few things i am sure of but of this i am absolutely certain: that dog will not bite anyone.
customer: i bet if someone threatened you, he'd bite.
me, acting like that's not an insane thing to say to a stranger: i have my doubts but i guess we just have to hope it's never tested!
customer: dogs will surprise you.

John Rucker was a high school English teacher in North Carolina when he stumbled upon something interesting: Whenever he took his two dogs hiking, they would run into the tall grass and bring him back box turtles. Like a gift, his Boykin spaniels would gently lay them at his feet, unharmed.
He mentioned it to a few people, and soon, biology teachers from the University of North Carolina started reaching out to him and asking whether he would take their students out so they could put transmitters on the turtles to study them.
Several years later, the outings were so successful, Rucker was fielding calls from wildlife veterinarians and zoologists who were studying turtle populations.
“Because turtles aren’t easily detected in the wild by the human eye, I could see that I was on to something,” said Rucker, now 73.
Now, two decades later, Rucker’s spaniels are a highly in-demand, specialized team trained to sniff out box turtles by following their urine trails.
The dogs — Yogi, Ruger, Jenny Wren, Lazarus, Scamp, Skeeter and Rooster — travel across the country with Rucker helping to track turtle populations and identify threats and diseases.
