Hello everyone

My name is Wos and I am a witch. Here is the introduction post of this blog. It will also be used as a masterpost of useful things I write and posts I deem important from other creators. The rest of the blog will mostly be witchy memes and occasional rants. I associate with green witchery, kitchen witchery and folklore magic, mostly. I am anti-ai and lgbtqia+ friendly.

My practice

I was introduced to Wicca almost 10 years ago & while I don't identify as a Wiccan, I acknowledge that my beliefs are strongly inspired by this religion (I do consider myself religious). I worship very old gods, but I don’t have a name for the path I follow because I believe a title was never needed. Nonetheless, my faith is very much concrete, solid and rests on a strong ecocentric set of values.

I tend to go in & out of big magical practices because I usually only do spells when needed. I don’t practice ceremonial magic, but still like to take the time to build solid spells. I try to tint the rest of my everyday life with easy & simple magical habits often rooted in various folklore. I am a big fan of divination and I put working on oneself before trying to change what surrounds us. For that reason, I do not personally really practice any kind of cursing or baneful magic. My practices have always been based on the ingredients from the earth and divine timing.

For the past several years, I have been doing the handmade/sustainable witchcraft thing. I make all my own candles, oils, and loose incense. I focus my methods on things I can make myself, things I have on hand, and things I can find either secondhand or out in the wild. I started doing it to feel more connected to my craft during a weird transition period in my life (because I was already doing it in other parts of my life and I wanted the same impact on my craft). But I've kept it up because I feel happier this way.

My plan is (and always has been) to slowly work my way backward through the chain or production as I learn and improve new skills. Basically I try to learn a skill and then learned to make the things to support that skill and so on and so forth until I hit a wall. Like with candles, my wall is pretty much just buying beeswax locally because I can't keep bees. With other things, I never know what my wall will be until I hit that dead end. But I have loved figuring it out. And I have a lot of mundane skills now that I didn't have five years ago. All from giving up buying witchcraft supplies. I'm so happy I went on this adventure. It really broadened my mind about what I was capable of with mundane craft and how dirty-hands I could get with my witchcraft.

When it comes to magic, it's always important to remember that people throughout history had very different ways of looking at the world and different ways of reckoning how it worked.

It's not that there are never any similarities between old practices and modern ones, but magic is continually reinvented as people's understanding of the world changes. Many ideas people have today are particular to the modern era, and would have been extremely counterintuitive someone living hundreds or thousands of years ago.

For example, a lot of people today think that spells are all about your personal energy and intention. And I don't think there's anything inherently bad in that perception. But it's not one that would've been shared by people who believed acts we might term magic were brought about by spirits you built relationships with. They understood that the power came from something outside of themselves.

Could we speculate that both practices might somehow be working by the same mechanism, regardless of the practitioner's beliefs? Sure, we could. I tend to think that most of what we consider magic works by focusing our minds toward particular goals. But that doesn't mean someone who was working with spirits (or believed they were working with spirits) in the past was actually doing psychology under a different name, and claiming such would be a complete misrepresentation of what the practitioner believed and what they intended to do.

It's easy to get caught up in claims that modern practices totally existed in the past under different names, because it feels validating to think that the things we believe and do were approved by people in the past. But we have to remember that the past was a different world, and it's genuinely unrealistic to expect ourselves to see and do things the same way they did all the time, especially with something as subjective as magic.

I feel like this post could lift a weight off someone's shoulders as it did for me.

I compare myself a lot with the information I find about old practices and I try to maintain this "traditionality" to my ways because I do seek this validation that what I'm doing is the "right" thing. It is very hard, complicated and confusing. It requires a lot of research and guessing. I never feel fully certain that I'm not just making everything up, until I see results.

But the conditions in which I practice are widly different from any ancestral roots I get inspiration from. I think I need to remember that more often.

I've been better lately at accepting that I need to rebuild my own personal practice because I am alone in all of this.

I just wanted to wish a happy spring equinox to everyone who celebrates it.

It's very hard for me to celebrate any of the seasonal festivals with my current situation, but my heart is in it with all of you. I wish you all the best for this new cycle ☀️💛

I think people forget how much scrap material is around us everyday they can use in magic. Especially fabric.

The amount of charm bags and pouches i make from old ripped up shirts or scrab fabric is nuts. You don't need to be using big chunky martials or jars for everything when thrift stores have soooo much fabric waiting to be adopted and put to use.

Bless them to learn their lesson sooner rather than later. Trust me, life lessons hurt.

I just want to say that I genuinely value people's thoughts when they oppose my own. As long as you're respectful I am open to hearing something I disagree with. Who knows? Maybe I'll learn something. It's dangerous to fall into an echo chamber in a spiritual space. As long as you don't get stressed out and neither party is being disrespectful, aggressive, or passive aggressive, I would encourage people to listen to opposing viewpoints. Of course it is important that neither party is hurting themselves or others, and both views are informed.

I just wish more people would be open to this.

Ecocentrism in my practice🌿🔮

Ecocentrism refers to nature-centered sets of values. I practice with respect for the Earth at the forefront of every move I make. I believe it is this form of respect that allows me to use the elements & ingredients for my spellwork.

~I live with the belief that if I don't help nature, why would nature help me?~

This way of thinking is anchored in the fact that I don't believe in omnibenevolent gods. My relationship with the deities and spirits I follow is much more transactional, while also being respectful, kind & supportive.

I live a strict life and I'm considered as a bit of an extremist in my immediate circle. I'm careful of overconsumption, I'm a vegetarian, I limit my purchases of single-use anything, I reuse, recycle & compost, I'm careful of which companies I buy from, and I try to voice my opinions to raise awareness around me (those are only a few examples). Since AI took over our lives, I've also started identifying as anti-AI for multiple various reasons (ecological & sociological).

Here's the thing: I also believe that the efforts I make are not that tiring or hard. And that if you practice the type of witchcraft that requires you to take ingredients from the Earth, then you need to make those sacrifices as a form of respect and to preserve the relationship you have with nature. Any type of offering is not enough if your everyday habits are not contributing to the well-being of our ecosystem.

For this reason, I also cannot imagine a type of magical practice that does not include a belief in nature deities and spirits. Those different and higher that us that allow the use of natural goods and shifting of energy.

I also want to mention that I've had those beliefs for a long time, but I'm always open to conversation. I'm actually thrilled by it.
