Having just finished Wuchang Fallen Feathers (and getting the Jar of Medicine ending), i have some thoughts [Spoilers] (Fully Played Post Patch 1.7 and the introduction of the "Rechallenge" mechanic allowing you to skip boss run-backs):

It is a very compelling(tm) combination of the mainline Dark Souls games, Bloodborne, and the Nioh games excluding Nioh 3 with a sprinkling of Lies of P:

There's a plague going around that makes people go Not-Hollow that makes them lose their memories and become more aggressive with no known cure that results in the afflicted becoming mutated Not-Beasts. There's also just actual zombies/undead that are being resurrected through alchemical means based around the combination universal currency + miracle metal + leveling source (Red Mercury) that was previously used by an ancient civilization to transcend their mortal form and become Birds. Also magic is real and used casually by most bosses and some enemies to the point that every boss drops an "Echo" spell instead of any weapons they use (even when the cutscenes make sure to get extra close-up shots of said weapons).

Weapons are upgraded (at a weapon type level instead of per individual weapon) using various luminous feathers instead of the miracle metal. There are only 5 weapon types with pre-set animations + combos for each type, but each individual weapon has unique weapon skills and designs to make each one standout. There are only 3 "Axes" (that I found on initial playthrough), only maybe one of which is an actual axe with the other 2 being a halberd and a giant fire-spewing torch. One of the "spears" is a steam-powered expanding bow-staff that sets itself on fire with its weapon skill and prevents environmental Frostbite build-up just by being your active weapon; you buy it from a panda in a straw/bamboo hat by trading it a bamboo shoot. There are more dual-swords than any other weapon type.

You improve weapons and level-up using a Nioh-esque skill tree. The skill tree for each weapon has nodes for the Magic and Feathering stats despite there (seemingly) being no weapons within some of those types that scale off of either stat. You also upgrade your healing flask uses + healing amount, unlock acupuncture needles + increase Temperance usage, and modify your Maddening Essence within the same skill tree despite using separate resources. Unless I personally missed some chests across the game, there might not be a way to fully upgrade your healing flask without entering the game's version of New Game +.

The game heavily encourages an aggressive, Bloodborne-esque "dodge into enemy swings" playstyle by making that the default way to gain the resource used to empower skills + disciplines and cast spells; with blocking and parrying being restricted to certain weapon types or even weapon disciplines you have to manually unlock. There are also different buffs/statuses you can unlock that allow either the negation of damage or the dodging of singular hits when casting specific spells or skills/disciplines. Most enemies and bosses have a stagger meter that when filled allows you to perform a critical/visceral/grapple/"Obliterate" move. The easiest way to fill said meter is to either hit a charged heavy attack (ala Bloodborne) or light attack spam from behind, with some of the more humanoid enemies being stun locked with the right weapon skill combo. Enemies also have weaknesses and vulnerabilities to certain status effects and elemental damage that more or less allows a few strikes with a buffed weapon or throwable items to full stack said effect/damage. Seemingly most bosses are weak to fire (which is the only Stone Needle the game outright gives you) and those that aren't are weak to Corruption/Feathering.

The Stone Needle/Accupunture mechanic allows almost every weapon to be infused or further infused with elemental and physical/magical scaling; certain weapons gain additional scaling/flat damage when further infused with their elemental damage. Every other main Stone Needle aside from Fire are only unlocked through the skill tree with Red Mercury. Supplementary Stone Needles that boost scaling stats, physical damage, and Temperance duration are scrounged across the game, although additional Stone Needle slots and Temperance uses are unlocked using Red Mercury aside from the final slot, which can only be unlocked by progressing an optional NPC questline and defeating an even more optional boss that doesn't spawn until the end of the game.

There's also the "Benediction" system for weapons, which allows you to put Bloodborne-style up to 3 runes on each weapon, granting buffs based on the individual rune and the rune set if all 3 runes belong to the same set. It doesn't exactly make or break your build, it's just an additional system to attempt to min-max weapons when paired with Temperance.

Bosses primarily only drop their Echo spells, their comfort item, and their Red Mercury pool; you can give the comfort item to one of the merchants to buy their outfit.

Every single chest piece from a female boss has a titty window of some degree; some leg pieces dont have pants and are just shoes or anklets unless paired with certain chest pieces. The gear pieces with the highest Corruption and/or Despair resistance are from the "Sex Slave" set you recieve after telling one of said sex slaves her husband is dead. There's a resourceless transmog system that's based on individual pieces instead of the item slot(s). The player character has titty-jiggle physics, seemingly regardless of chest piece. One of the bosses is wearing nothing but an open fur robe and and blue heels with no pants; she's the boss of the snowy mountain region with a unique environmental freeze effect.

The structure of the game itself is most similar (to me) to Dark Souls 3 in terms of feel of progression despite being fairly linear. There are 5 main areas of the game (labeled "Chapters") that can only be progressed in order after defeating the Main bosses of each area, but each area has sub-areas that generally end in their own optional boss(es). Any NPC(s) that have progressable quests or shop unlocks are shown on the teleport map (ala Lies of P) but there isnt a questlog/journal aside from the genre default of "Consult the fan wiki/walkthrough". Most areas and sub-areas that aren't linear paths to the next boss are usually centered around one singular shrine and/or a safe zone where (usually most of) the intractable NPCs will gather; with both having shortcuts or atleast shorter paths to connect to the main progression route of the area. NPC quests are fairly easy to either fully miss or otherwise botch if you dont have walkthrough of some sort pulled up as soon as you enter a new area as atleast on quest doesn't start until you pick up an item hidden behind a gesture mechanic similar to how youre supposed to deal with Nurikabe in the Nioh series (use the either explicitly stated or implied gesture at the location you find the hint at and you'll recieve either an item or dialogue related to the "Lore" of the setting) and other quests will either break or fully fail if you dont follow the exact steps of progression.

There are mimics in the game, but there's only maybe 3 and they take the place of shrines in certain areas until you kill them; their "tell" is a trail of blood leading to the altar and they can be attacked freely without triggering the grab animation. There are also Crystal Lizards, but theyre little walking bamboo sprouts called Bamboozlings; they die after a single hit and drop bamboo shoots. There's also Pot Mimics, that mimic the destructive pots throughout the game but have drastically increased health and resistances but they tend to drop Red Mercury and Red Feather items.

Despite releasing in 2025, the game fully closes the item menu everytime you use a consumable, including the Red Mercury items and its annoying as hell even with the "Batch Use" option.

There's a "streamer mode" that disables gore but it doesn't elaborate the type of "gore" it disables. They changed the fates of some bosses to not die after their fights because it pissed off various Chinese censors despite being from a Chinese developer and set in an alternate history of the late Ming Dynasty. The english voice cast says every line in unaccented english but pronounces every single name in fluent/precise Chinese without fail.

All-in-all, Wuchang treats the bigger names of the souls-like genre like a sampling buffet while simultaneously not taking enough. A fully blind playthrough only took me 35-ish hours. Theres only 24 bosses in the entire game, but only 10 are required for the critical path, and 9 bosses alone are in the first Chapter of the game. Most took an average of 10 tries, with several only taking a handful of tries after getting their specific dodge timing mostly correct but every try until that point definitely felt like trying to headbutt a brick wall.

I definitely recommend it if youre already into souls-likes and want more to play, but it doesn't really do anything too different from the main players in the genre aside making weapon buffing + infusing a core part of combat instead of making it an optional aspect of magic combat.

The Boys Season 5 E8/Finale Live Blog Thingy [Spoilers]

The "previously on" segment containing a majority of scenes from seasons 1-3 really doesn't help the "season 5 is botched" allegations. They definitely had to have had their budget restricted across the board, from shooting time and location to crowd shots and supporting/background actors
