I had a lot to say when I started re-watching B5 a few months ago. It was the beginning of a big DC comics journey, so I decided not to share my thoughts. This time, I wouldn't be able to finish, so it wouldn't be right for the Babylonian fandom. However, "The Gathering" (didn't watch chronological order this time) sparked a comparison that seemed important to me. I see a lot of similarities between Laurel and Lianna.
Both girls use the masks of inaccessible and battle-ready leaders, whose orders must be followed without question. They are highly competent, loyal to the rules, and young enough for a crucial leadership position. For them, duty takes precedence over individual values. This is not a matter of cynicism, but rather of the rigorous training that life seems to have provided them with, even before their official appointment.
While the above descriptions are important, their true faces are equally significant. They are vulnerable and somewhat timid. They are like the little girl that uncle Michael left alone and in the dark. There is undoubtedly more tenacity and pressure in Lianna. Laurel is more inclined to dialogue, which is evident in her interactions with Jeff. They are different.
And yes, it's well known, many ideas followed from one character to another in the development process. But - for example - you can very quickly find out how Elizabeth is different from Susan. But these two...
I think I want to know more about Laurel's past and possible future. Partly because I love her type, and it's even more complex than the B5 universe's secret of Lochley. She had her time in movies and spin-offs at least.
But also because I really don't see enough weak women in the media. No, no, not in the sense of "easy to break." John, Michael, even Stephen, had a normal childhood. It might not have been the best, but it wasn't the same as losing his father, as it was with Kemmer. Such pain kills the soul. Who knows what happened to Takashima. Maybe she went through something similar. Or maybe not. The point is, being confident in every day and taking on a meaningful role is often much more difficult when you don't have the willpower granted by your parents. You try more on an internal level. Sometimes it makes you a much stronger person. But on other days, you regret that you didn't die years ago. Fearlessness and Insecurity. Loyalty and excessive idealization of "Your Things". I want to see it in more often...
