there's a running theory i have about serial stories, like. if you bulk-release everything you have at once, you don't really get a fandom. this is fine and good - good art and fandom are often directly at odds.

if you update very frequently - think homestuck at its peak, "every day, every page is substantial" frequently - you will get the most active fandom but retention of the text also starts to dip. this is okay enough, though, this also brings you an incomplete text. so people want to preempt the story themselves. this involves a lot of what we call "theorizing" but is actually just creative writing outright. you're competing with infinite monkeys on infinite typewriters almost immediately. but so long as you keep the sluice gate of new information open, you can keep playing theory whack-a-mole.

but if you slow down for too long, the monkeys on typewriters outpace you. someone is going to have an idea that won't be better than what you're doing - chances are it'll play into a lot of existing archetypal writing. people like a story that conforms to expectations - but it will be treated as if it is. people will both think you're the stupidest asshole in the world and the biggest brain genius in the world who's encoded meaning into every pixel and every sample of a sound and every letter. this is when you have lost. nobody is happy. nobody is satisfied because the monkeys have written the perfect ending based on what they want it to be.

this is almost nice - creative writing is a skill to be fostered - but nobody knows how to set realistic expectations. deltarune is always just a day away and when it comes out gaster's gonna be the knight and papyrus is gonna be the knight and the guy behind the tree is the knight and everyman is the knight and sans is the knight and the game is gonna suck you silly

Some day I want to see a show that does the “no filler episodes” thing from the opposite direction. Just a whole season worth of low-stakes character pieces that seem to move the overall story absolutely nowhere, then episode 26 pulls all the triggers at once and this massive Rube Goldberg machine of a plot the show’s been quietly setting up in the background the whole time hits you like a truck.
