Mawls and Monsters masterpost 🎪

... because I am crazy about this campaign and will be posting a lot more art from it. So if you want to know what the hell is going on, fear not! Here is your chance to understand.

What is Mawls and Monsters?

To put it simply it's a DND campaign between me and a few friends! It's inspired by/takes place in the world created by the Dungeons and Daddies podcast. (We are not affiliated with the podcast in any way.)

Where in the Dndads timeline does it take place?

It takes place in between season 1 and 2, shortly after Code Purple and before the start of Season 2. It all starts in a Walmart on Black Friday...

Who are the characters/players?

We have 3 players (including myself) and a dungeon master (Mawl Master).

Peepaw - played by me, @alien-bluez ! He's a grizzled old man walmart worker and barbarian. He jumps through a portal into this cursed mall to save his three grandkids.

Jamie - played by @writertyozzie123 . He's an agent in D.A.D.D.I.E.S., a rogue, and the worst dad you know. He goes to Walmart to investigate a strange toy called the "Squiggle" and now has to find his lost daughter in the monster mall.

Chap - played by @itsnianom . He's an intern at a fashion company, a doormat, and our cleric. He goes to Walmart to buy an exercise bike when a portal opens up. He jumps in just because, but also to find his lost daughter. He's also British.

@pittermogged is our Dungeon Master who we also call our Mawl Master. Her mallsona is a security guard, but she's not very good at keeping anyone safe. 🤨

Is there a way to listen/keep up with the campaign?

Currently no! We record all our sessions but don't have them uploaded anywhere besides a private gdrive. We post clips sometimes on insta. Might post clips here, or maybe the powerpoint will update to keep up but idk! (Go follow the others though, that's probs the best way to keep up)

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

Let's talk about reblog notes.

We rolled out a significant change to how notes work on reblogs, and the reaction has been strong. We're not going to pretend otherwise. 

First things first: We're reversing the change. Your feedback in comments, emails, and especially reblogs, made clear that the rollout created problems we need to address before moving forward. We also should have communicated this differently from the start, and we didn't.

We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you.

In the coming days we'll share more on how we plan to do that,  including ways to work directly with some of you on this and future changes before they ship.

i'mma be real, i like how reblogs are already.

it's what makes tumblr unique from the other social medias that suck ass in terms of getting engagement.

you can have a bigger artist reblog your art and you get a bunch of notes, which is really nice and motivating to see that people enjoy what you create and react to it.

i don't want any sort of update that messes up this system by only letting the bigger account get notes cuz people generally don't go to the reblogged page unless they're REALLY interested.

i should know- it's what i do too. i mainly just scroll and like posts i like because of the original post and maybe cuz of the reblogged message. wither way, it's a supportive win for the original poster's engagement.

with all due respect, the entire concept you are/were trying to push is so demotivating to artists and only harms the community.

minor changes like better navigation or redesigning the UI would be one thing, but making it turn more into twitter is NOT the play. it's only making people jump ship.

if you really want to give individual credit, make it how you did it with comments and just add a like button to reblog messages. not take notes away from the original. as in, just add a small heart to like a reblog individually.

As a very heavy user of this site with a lot of high interactivity posts, I'm relieved by this rollback because the change made Tumblr impossible to use for me. I suspect this is true of most people with a lot of high interactivity posts; the easiest way to get involves in conversations is by browsing the notes on a given post for interesting additions and tags to respond to. This lets you get involved in various different reblog chains easily and keeps interactivity flowing.

The now-reversed changes made this impossible, turning an open and many-branched conversation into a sterile and isolating experience. It stripped the sociality out of the website, making it feel less like a place to interact and converse with people and more like an art gallery. People who want a sterile art gallery are already on Pinterest and Instagram. They won't come here for a service that other sites already provide much better.

I couldn't track conversations on my own posts because of the way it was implemented, and I certainly couldn't get easily involved in conversations on anyone else's. I've put up with multiple changes that make the site less convenient to use (things that turn what used to be a one-step process into a two-step process, etc.), but I am being completely serious in saying that I was making preparations to leave permanently if this change stuck around. I was in the process of choosing which other sites to move my art to and decisions on what other sites to reuse my current username for minimum disruption to my career because it was not possible to continue here. I was actively planning my exit.

I think there are a lot of small changes you could make that could be beneficial or at least non-disruptive, but attempts at streamlining or separating notes like that simply don't work with how your site is actually used and, because of the ways that other methods of interaction become more difficult on this site the more interactivity your posts have, I strongly suspect that if such changes were to stick around, I would not be the only highly active user with high-interactivity posts to leave, because the problems they create for me would also exist for every other user with a lot of high interactivity posts.

I love the original and it took me a hot minute to noodle on how exactly I could represent it with some art. It’s also the respected academic term?? The acronym isn’t static and it’s usage is varied by things like generational difference, location, and knowledge of the community. Even just in the U.S. in the last few decades the common usage gone from GLBT to LGBT to LGBTQ, to LGBTQA/LGBTQIA/LGBTQIAP/etc (Which, let me tell you as someone who has given presentations in the past using these updated acronyms, are all real mouthfulls), to LGBT+.

Also yes, queer is more inclusive! Especially coming at it from an academic standpoint, people didn’t always use or identify with the terms we use now and you can’t always try to cram them into our modern perceptions of sexuality. We can argue for years about whether a famous historical figure was gay or bisexual or straight and trans or whatever, but if we can all agree that they were somehow queer then using that term allows us to move past the debate and into productive discussion. And not everybody everywhere shares the same terms for sexual and gender identity, or even the same concepts of those things, so queer really is a more inclusive term in a lot of cases.

Like yeah if you’re talking specifically about gay or trans people you can just say gay or transgender, but if you’re talking about more than one identity or someone who doesn’t conform to our perceptions of ‘LGBT,’ or a person or people whose identity you don’t know, queer is just the better word.

I don’t know if this is just because I’m not American but I’ve never heard queer used as a slur. Ever. Meanwhile gay was the insult in the 2000s here. Everything you didn’t like was ‘soo gay’. Queer wasn’t even a word most of us knew back then.

It just baffled me that people would think an identifier is automatically a slur just because someone uses it to mock someone. If we did that gay would be a slur. Stupid would be a slur. Autistic would be a slur.

The reason people are upset about the word queer is that it’s a unifying term. You can say you’re queer and all people will know is that you’re part of the community. But you can’t say you’re LGBT, you have to say you’re gay or trans or ace. They don’t want you to be ambiguously queer. They want you to say which kind of queer you are so they can decide whether you’re undesirable.
