Listen to me, my queer younglings, I don’t usually write in gifsets because it is highly damaging to the aesthetic, but this is a very important PSA. This movie is the sadly ignored, unsung hero of all light lesbian romantic comedies, and if you have not watched it, you should do that right now, at this very moment.

not to further damage anyone’s gifset aesthetic, but i also loved this movie & wanna point out why it’s one of the very few Lesbian Movies That Don’t Suck

nobody dies. it’s a low bar, but we all know how often movies and TV shows fail to make it over!

while it does include a coming out story & some related obstacles, that isn’t the entire focus of the film - it’s at least as much about the relationship between the main character and her mother as it is about queer romance, and it’s also very much about the NYC Chinese-American community. it’s not a one-note Gay Story, is what i’m saying. queer people DOING THINGS other than being queer.

So I was listening to ‘No One Mourns the Wicked’ and it just hit me that Glinda has to be absolutely devastated during that number because the best friend she has ever had has just died, as far as she knows, but she promised Elphie that she wouldn’t try to clear Elphie’s name so Glinda just has to stand there and listen to all of these people celebrate the fact that her best friend is dead and I am not okay

one of the weirdest things about the Wicked musical is that it’s so fucking tragic, but it disguises itself as this happy, inspiring, family-fun show

Glinda is being cheesy and charming in the opening number, but yeah, she’s devastated. when she starts telling the story of Elphaba’s life? it’s so sad. but they hold the baby up and people chuckle because it’s this weird looking green doll

yeah Defying Gravity is this huge inspirational ballad but their goodbye in the middle and Glinda’s last “i hope you’re happy” as one of the last lines of the act is just? so painful?

The Wizard and I has so much irony and foreshadowing that it’s easy to forget how eager and devoted Elphaba was, and how she never really had a chance. Thank Goodness is one of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard, but Glinda’s moment of pain and vulnerability is sung to herself, immediately covered by a big smile and a celebration

“I’ve had so many friends, but only one that mattered” gets the audience laughing, and you don’t always feel the full weight of it. I mean, Glinda’s entire character is tragedy wrapped up in a pretty smile.

basically if you read between the lines or look at this show past face value in any way at all, it’s absolutely heartbreaking and don’t worry friend i’m not okay either

There’s a moment in No One Mourns the Wicked when Glinda sings (in echo of the rejoicing ensemble) “she died alone” and it is just so mournful and haunting

For those of you who don’t know what sortinghatchats is– it’s a Hogwarts house personality typing system in which everyone gets two sortings:

Your Primary House is WHY you do things.

Your Secondary House is HOW you do things.

We find this split adds a lot of complexity and nuance to discussions, especially for breaking down or building up characters. I genuinely just used this quiz to learn new things about some characters in a thing I’m writing, which, as I also wrote the quiz, was a pretty trippy experience.

If you want to read more about sortinghatchats– take the quiz! It’s intended to be a more accessible portal to understanding the system than reading every single thing on our blog, which is the present avenue. It guides you through the system to what it thinks is relevant for you, while still allowing you to explore the irrelevant to your heart’s content.
