A 75 yo man proudly came into the cafe wearing an Ultra Maga hat. I excused my barista from the register to handle the transaction.
"The hat is customizable," he said, struggling with the velcro patch on the front. "If I need it, I have an ICE one too. I pick based off the business i walk into."
"Customizable is an important hat descriptor," I said. "what can I get you?"
"You wouldn't believe how offended people get these days," he said. "And I'm supposed to do something about it if you're offended? You chose to be offended!"
"We all have hundreds of thousands of decisions everyday," I said. I thickened my accent. "That's what my stepdad always said. But I can make one easier - we have a delicious Ethiopian roast available."
"Like if I told you you have a bull ring," he said, "because bulls have rings in their noses. Is that offensive?"
I laughed. "I've heard that before."
"It's a joke, but people get offended. Maybe you're offended."
I looked at him. I smiled. "You aren't trying to offend me though, right?"
Of course he was. I was being friendly and the friendlier I was, the faster he switched topics. He was saying anything inflammatory he could think of to see if I'd take the bait. After about 20 minutes of my redirecting and deescalating, he settled into a more normal interaction. He took up too much of my time showing me a product I'd feigned mild interest in to get him to stop talking about getting accused of inappropriate behavior at work. When we finally disengaged, he spent 10 minutes trying to catch my eye again. When he failed, he left.
There's this new breed of customer who insists on trying to incite political conversation through their clothing and, when that doesnt work, their snide little comments. If I owned my own business, maybe I would have given the guy the fight he wanted. But I work for a corporation and I love paying my bills so I deescalated.
Anyone wearing that type of shit and preying on workers for their own spank bank material is a brainless fucking sheep.
Ok, consider;
Superhero Mira, pressured on all sides to start killing villains by her peers (most of whom do so) her parents (legacy heroās) her brother (who is a jerk) and the media.
Civilian (no powers) Zoey is the only one who tells her not to kill the villains, instead arresting them and putting them through the courts via gadgets she makes/info about their powers.
Rumi whoās a āSupervillainā (who targets corrupt heroās and takes away their powers) runs into a burning building and saves Zoey. (Zoey was caught in the crossfire between Mira and Rumi.)
Zoey is obviously working with one of the heroās, so Rumi takes as much of her gear as she can along with Zoey to get info. (She intimidates but wonāt hurt her.)
Mira assumes she kidnapped Zoey and is planning on torturing her. She ends up finding them a week later where Rumi is literally on her knees begging Zoey to leave her secret lair, no, stop, why are you taking apart my sunlamp, WHERE DID YOU GET URANIUM?? Stuff like that.
So Mira ends up just casually walking up behind Rumi and hugging her (her flame powers would let her burn Rumi to a cinder, and Rumiās teleport wouldnāt work while someoneās holding her). She asks Zoey if sheās ok, and Zoey starts rambling about how nice Rumi is and how she refused to torture Zoey āeven though she wanted info about *insert transparently corrupt heroās name here* which I do have.ā
For Mira it clicks really fast that Rumi isnāt targeting heroās as a whole, specifically corrupt ones after she sees the meticulous notes Rumi has. (She let go of Rumi and started rifling through them despite her protests.)
(āDid you color code your notes about heroās costumes?ā
Rumi, who is blushing and stuttering and trying to grab the papers Mira is holding out of her reach and flustered in a way Miraās never seen:)
Basically, the two of them adopt Rumi into their little group of āno-kill heroās-villains-civiliansā.
I dunno, I just think itād be really funny cus before this all happened Rumi was known to be terrifying for the way sheād cripple or strip heroās of their powers, with the exception of Mira or heroās she knows are actually good people.
Iām of the firm opinion that the Jedi are like a small town where everyone knows everyone.
Your average padawan will be like āthis is my older padawan-sibling, and this is their favorite crechemate. And this is their favorite crechemateās usual mission partner. And this is their usual mission partnerās platonic life mate. And this is their platonic life mateās grandpadawan. The grandpadawan is also my Huttese tutor.ā And it goes on and on and on.
new crackship unlocked holy hell-
so like⦠were NONE of you guys going to tell me this?!? I found out just now
dammit now I have to make human designs for both Tumblr and Ao3, which is gonna be hard cuz I donāt read fanfiction and my stylus is STILL BROKEN
Wait what? They actually got married??
concept: the Jedi Mind Trick can persuade someone to do anything you could convince them of over a friendly drink, maybe after they've gotten lightly drunk so they have fewer inhibitions. "C'mon, bro, those aren't the droids you're looking for." "Elan. Buddy. You don't want to sell death sticks to a guy with a lightsaber. You need to go home and rethink your life, man!" It can't do anything this kind of one-off persuasion can't do, it's just a shortcut. This also makes sense for how i.e. Jabba's hatred of Han Solo is too great for anyone to persuade him to give it up. I don't have anything to say about Toydarians
I figure the Jedi Mind Trick only lasts an hour, or until a third party says āwait, they told you to do what?!ā So itās useful for escapes or for situations where youāll be long gone by the time your mark snaps out of it, but it canāt be used to sway opinions or change behaviour long-term
listenā¦do not take this wrong way because i have absolutely nothing against you guysā¦but āx readerā writers NEED to start tagging their writing with the general āx readerā tag or im gonna start losing my shit
I was going through some Wookieepedia pages, and it dawned on me just how few Jedi there are.Ā
10000 may sound like a lot, but itās such a ridiculously little number ever by our standards that it becomes completely laughable on the galactic scale.Ā
I know numbers in Star Wars are wonky and donāt really make sense. Most of them are made up by EU writers trying to fill in the gaps in Lucasā admittedly scarce worldbuilding - as a result, none of them match and even numbers accepted as ācanonā donāt mean all that much..Ā
Still, they at least give us something to go on from.Ā
According Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to KnowĀ and Ultimate Star Wars, two books held as canon within the current continuity, there are 1 trillion people on Coruscant. According to some Legends sources, itās 2 trillions.Ā
1,000,000,000,000.
Thatās how much a trillion is.
A trillion seconds is 31,709 years. A trillion square kilometers is about 2000 Earths.Ā
A trillion people is 130 times Earthās population.Ā
Itās not an unrealistic large number, because if a planet the size of Earth was covered in buildings from sea level to above the peak of its highest mountain, it would very reasonably host 100 times the worldās population. It even seems a bit of an underestimation. Estimates vary wildly, but the most densely populated cities in the world have between 30000 and 80000 people/km2. Average that to 55000p/km2, multiply it by the 510 million square kilometers of Earthās surface (Earth and Coruscant having almost similar diameters) and you get TWENTY EIGHT TRILLION PEOPLE. And thatās without accounting for the fact that Coruscantās density would necessarily be higher because of itsĀ thousands of levels that are several kilometers high.
Even if we say that Coruscant is smaller than Earth and somehow less densely populated, 1 trillion is still a bare minimum.
Ten thousand Jedi living on Earth (7,7 billion inhabitants) would mean 1 Jedi out of 770000 people. Itās a really, reallyĀ small number. (And thatās assuming there are 10000 Knights. Because that number could include the children, the elderly and those who arenāt on active duty for one reason or another.)
Ten thousand Jedi out of a trillion? 1,000,000,000,000 vs 10,000?Ā Itās ONE JEDI OUT OF A HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE. Thereād be seventy-sevenĀ Jedi on Earth with that ratio. Thereād be three Jedi in the USA! Thereād be eleven Jedi in China!Ā
(And a trillion isnāt even everyone in the Galaxy, itās just everyone on Coruscant.
We know other worlds have at least millions of people, even without pulling numbers out of nowhere - Obi-Wan feels millions of people die when Alderaan is destroyed. (Keeping in mind that a million people is a ridiculously, unfathomably small number of people compared to a trillion.) We also know that there are thousands of worlds in the Republic - the delegation of 2000 is just a small part of the Senate, and the Neutral Systems (a really small part of galactic politics) number 1500 systems according to Satine in TCW. Millions times thousands equals = more billions.
Itās insane. Imagine blaming Palpatineās rise to power on the Jedi. Like, do you blame three senators for the Orange One? Do you blame three well-connected evangelists with (disputable) influence but no actual political power? Do you blame three high-level cops, no matter how corrupt, how bad, how āset in their waysā?
Do you blame a faith of 77 people for the state of the world?Ā Or the 2000~ billionaires heading gigantic corporations that hoard wealth and trample human rights.
Are you currently telling people to vote, or are three people in the USA responsible for keeping the system together?Ā
The Jedi werenāt enough to defend the whole Galaxy. Itās outright stated several times in the movies and the cartoons.. There were fewer Jedi than there were Senators. Even irl they wouldnāt have the power to fix the world, short of taking over governments. When they do try that in SW (to save the Republic from becoming a fascist dictatorship headed by basically Satan), they get wiped out in one afternoon tops.
The Jedi could only be the shield that protected the Republic from the outside force of destruction that were the Sith. Only the Republic could protect itself from its own evil.Ā
My college has over 20,000 new students this year. Expecting them to solve every issue in the galaxy is absolutely ridiculous.
was reading your faq and it said " are you a moth prince apologist?" and somehow I read that as "are you a pride month apologist?" making the answer to the faq actually hilarious
I suppose I am something of a pride month apologist
I really love that Padme is simultaneously the best person everyone knows and the one of the worst people everyone knows.
Like Queen Amidala was one of the most beloved Queens of Naboo in history, to the point that they literally wanted to overturn their own CONSTITUTION in order to keep her in power and only her refusal to allow it or to even run if they did kept that from happening. She's remembered as being kind, intelligent, brave, and beautiful. She is almost literally perfection incarnate.
And Senator Amidala is primarily known and remembered as someone who fought against war and corruption, someone who was willing to put her life on the line when it mattered and one of the few who was willing to speak out and fight against injustice. She's remembered for being powerful and clever and strong and moral.
There's never any real smear campaign against her the way there is against, say, the Jedi. Palpatine wants to stop Padme sometimes, sure, but he never sees her as such a big threat that he needs to turn the entire galaxy against her. In fact, her pristine reputation probably ends up helping him by proxy since he was her mentor. Even the reveal of Padme's pregnancy after her death, something that would've exposed that she'd had a scandalous affair, never seems to tarnish her reputation as a paragon of moral perfection. Even decades after her death, she seems to still be remembered extremely positively.
But the REALITY of Padme is far different. She's a corrupt politician, she's willing to help cover up several different crimes committed by her own husband, she's potentially going against her own planet's rules by having gotten married at all, she's going against some other rules by getting married to a JEDI. She's a liar and a hypocrite, she's selfish and greedy, and she's more and more willing to let herself be convinced into doing things she knows are wrong by the end.
But no one seems to truly know that person. The one person closest to her who does know about some of these choices often refuses to acknowledge or accept the reality of her because it obviously benefits him that she is this way and he's choosing to see what he wants to see. And everyone else is kept at such a distance that they don't get to see the darkness that lies beneath the pristine lie she wears.
So Padme ends up being someone that everyone remembers as being one of the best people they've ever known, but the reality is that Padme was likely one of the worst people they'd ever known, that she had in many ways become one of the people she constantly claimed to be fighting against.
Wikipedia Is Battling for the Soul of the Internet
The internetās largest stockpile of free knowledge is under threat from MAGA, A.I. and foreign autocrats. A bibliophile ex-ambassador is here to help.
"Wikipedia is in peril.
In a world where trust in truth is crumbling, the grande dame of collective online fact-gathering is under threat on every front. The MAGA right, with Elon Musk at the fore, is slinging accusations of political bias and antisemitism and has even questioned the siteās nonprofit status. Artificial intelligence is raiding the encyclopediaās resources and draining attention. Repressive governments have hauled its volunteer editors into penal colonies.
In Wikipediaās 25-year history, it has never had to fight this hard." -----
Interesting, alarming article.
tl;dr: If you use Wikipedia every day, like your sobsister, or even regularly, and you have a few bucks to spare, think about a donation to help it fight off MAGA/Musk, AI, and authoritarian governments around the world.

@hellsite-hall-of-fame
Get Moist von Lipwig in charge of the US postal service ASAP
Ok I know this is super old now but I work at a post office and I was curious about the price so I did some digging and I still donāt have a definite answer because THE REASON it says āno shipping services availableā is because all shipping services were actually suspended to Guam at the time. As in no packages, parcels, letters, or mail or any kind could be sent to Guam. So not only is it mind boggling that it got sent so far in the wrong direction of its intended destination, but because nothing should have been able to get in to Guam period.
You QUITE LITERALLY could not have sent these cookies to Guam if you tried.
im realizing very fast that people do not in fact know that sometimes things in stories suck on purpose and it sucking is the point
"this story is misogynistic!!"
>looks inside
>about the pressures of societal misogyny and how its bad

āPEACE, MOTHERFU-ā
I love the idea that Mace is at fault for attacking a man who was shooting at him while he was unarmed. Kept going when he rearmed himself and was literally part of the plan to genocide Mace's people.
Maybe Jango shouldn't have taken his kid to an execution and left rather than kill several Jedi and try to kill Mace.
Boo hoo, he got what was coming to him. How dare a guy not roll over and let a bounty hunter kill him? How dare a man not check all the holes in the wall to see if a child is hiding in them before defending himself?
both? Both.
We have to choose?
If a lesbian killed him, I might not know what to do with all my delight.
