I finished DS9 and here's my first offering to the fandom.

The show is just SO GOOD!! I wanna talk about it so bad, so I will spam the tags quite a bit... My bad. Also, the people who said Bashir would get better - you were right, he became a lot more fun! Plus he's got a teddy bear, that's peak character right there.

I recently did a Garak run of DS9 where I only watch the Garak episodes, and my friend Rebecca asked me to put together a list of the best ones for her to watch (with a special emphasis on the Garak/Bashir ship). So, here are my picks! What are your favorite Garak episodes?

Ford Prefect's name is usually lost on younger fans or lost in translation. He's directly named after a popular car by the same name (produced from 1938-1961) that was really popular in Britain.

For reference, this is what it is.

The equivalent would be if he named himself Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or Ford Puma.

I think in the movie, another detail is when Ford first got to Earth, he was hit by a blue Ford Prefect while trying to greet it.

Certain translations did change his name, however. I know French and Greek translations changed his name to Ford Escort. The Dutch one completely changed it to Amro Bank (largest commercial bank in the Netherlands, at the time)

His nickname in school was Ix, which means "boy who is not able to satisfactorily explain what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelgeuse Seven."

He doesn't know how to pronounce his birth name, which caused his father to die of shame.

there's this thing that bugs me and i worry if i voice it i'll get yelled at for like, making self-important justifications to be annoyed about something that is not that deep at all, but fuck it i'm speaking my stupid from the heart here, ok anyway.

so john and arthur are both disabled, i feel like that shouldn't be a controversial thing to say, right? looks around nervously over the top of the mic. like arthur's completely blind, obvi, and john has no body and is largely reliant on arthur's assistance to do Everything including his hobbies. the ways in which they learn to assist each other in that regard and work to meet both their needs is like a defining core feature of their relationship.

and then there's this recurring fandom point of discussion, which thankfully i've seen far far less of since part 58 but is still kind of floating nebulously in the general consciousness, which is that jarthur should separate and get their own bodies. and it's like, in and of itself, even if i disagree, i get why people say that, why they want more independence for john especially. but like. there's a point, yknow? where there's this complete insistence on their current setup being fundamentally worse and poisonous for both of them, and a refusal to consider any solutions based solely in communicating more, even tho that's what they've both been doing for their entire time together thus far, but no obviously that would never be a functional resolution, no, the only solution is that john acquires his own [completely abled] human body and has completely physical independence. otherwise they'll be miserable forever. there is no arguing this point.

idk there's a point where it just kind of starts to stray, for me at least, uncomfortably close to some awkward assumptions about like, the QOL of actual people who rely heavily on caregivers, or etc. like again it's not the "they should have separate bodies" argument in itself, but sometimes it acquires this weird insistence that john's life specifically is necessarily deprived, and completely refuses to imagine that his actual textually expressed feelings about separating (i.e. he doesn't like it) might have merit. and it's like. ok and i bet you have really good and not at all pitying opinions about housebound people/people who use AAC/etc. if you are so hung up on non-independent life experiences being fundamentally lesser.
