something has gone deeply wrong when "focusing pragmatically on issues you can influence and working to make life better for yourself and your community" is considered an unserious distraction while "endlessly exposing yourself to media about distressing situations you can't control" is considered political engagement
This is an experiment to see if there really are as few of us as people think. You can also use this to freak out your followers who think you’re 25 or something. Yay!
It has come to my attention that some of you have not actually seen the music video for Ghengis Khan by Miike Snow so I’ve taken it on myself to end your ignorance of this piece of cinema
Just to be clear this would not make them unable to make the movies they’d just have to properly pay the creators and their families for the use of the characters.
I've said this before and I'll say it again: it's more important to know and understand fully why something is harmful than it is to drop everything deemed problematic. It's performative and does nothing. People wonder why nobody has critical thinking skills and this is part of it because no one knows how to simousltansly critique and consume media. You need to use discernment.
This is ultimately why propaganda is going to work on you. Because you never learned how to think for yourself and the actual ideology behind things. You simply rely on group think and the bare minimum explanations to tell you what's good and bad.
i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:
"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"
Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.
there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.
"Well are you a [controversial identity] supporter???"
My friend I do not know what to tell you here. My rule is and remains "I don't care what you call yourself because your actions and who you are as a person is more valuable to me" and "as long as everyone in the situation is an adult and is giving enthusiastic consent I genuinely do not give a fuck what you do" and "words are stupid and people are complicated so it doesn't matter if The Words Are Wrong as long as it makes you happy"
I'm a longer tables not higher walls kind of guy. Have a seat. Break bread with me. Tell me a story over dinner. I think that'll be better for the both of us.
fucking hate it when the stuff everybody says "actually works" does actually work.
hate exercising and realizing i've let go of a lot of anxiety and anger because i've overturned my fight-or-flight response.
hate eating right and eating enough and eating 3 times a day and realizing i'm less anxious and i have more energy
hate journaling in my stupid notebook with my stupid bic ballpoint and realizing that i've actually started healing about something once i'm able to externalize it
hate forgiving myself hate complimenting myself more often hate treating myself with kindness hate taking a gratitude inventory hate having patience hate talking to myself gently
hate turning my little face up to the sun and taking deep breaths and looking at nature and grounding myself and realizing that i feel less burdened and more hopeful, more actually-here, that i am able to see the good sides of myself more clearly, that i am able to see not only how far i have to grow - but also how much growth i have already done & how much of my life i truly fill with light and laughter and love
horrible horrible horrible. hate it but i'm gonna do it tho
i think that at this point. at THIS point of Things. you can pretty safely assume that almost no one is Doing Well, so instead of being a real shitlord about tiny problems, maybe instead go out of your way to be kinder and more patient to everyone around you.
In an age of communication that profits from your anger, that glorifies hostile, anonymous public arguments as a form of entertainment or even social development... there's something kind of radical about just not replying to dumb shit.
Like it sounds obvious to say "well duh, just ignore it" but so much of media consumption is designed to make you crave the opposite.
Social media LOVES when you get into arguments online. You're not changing anybody's mind, you're just feeding their algorithms and showing them what kind of content gets an emotional rise out of you. Feeling like you need to come back to a post to "check up on" the arguments and make your move like it's some sports game is the exact thing keeping a fearful suburban family glued to the FOX News screen.
Everyone can say anything, about anything, anywhere, at any time. There is no online filter to separate worthy discussion from unhinged bullshit, or even just something not worth your time. When everything is presented on a level playing field designed only to keep you engaged by any means necessary, it's a radical act to say "I could reply and state my case, but my time is worth more than this."
