In the meantime - Tom Hirons
There’s a theory that early Europeans started saying “brown one” or “honey-eater” instead of “bear” to avoid summoning them, and similarly my friend has started calling Alexa “the faceless woman” because saying her true name awakens her from her slumber
English has an avoidance register used in the presence of certain respected animals, which sounds fancy until you realize it’s spelling out w-a-l-k and t-r-e-a-t in front of the dog.

Icelandic folklore requires you avoid saying the names of evil whales, otherwise you’ll draw their attention.
Yall have evil whales?
Iceland does! They are the illhveli, literally “evil whales”, and they live to kill you. They love nothing more than killing and eating humans and sinking their ships. Their greatest enemy is the steypireydur (that’s blue whale to you), which is the greatest of the good whales and the protector of sailors.
All evil whales are, well, evil. So evil that if you speak their name at sea, they will hear it and home in on you. So instead you use all sorts of euphemisms for their names. Also if you try to cook their meat it literally disappears from the pot. That’s right, they’re so evil, you can’t even eat them.
They include such types as the hrosshvalur (horsewhale), with big eyes and a red mane and tail. This is probably the best known and most feared of the lot.
The raudkembingur (redcomb) is especially cruel and bloodthirsty even by illhveli standards. If you manage to escape it, it will die of frustration.
Good luck escaping the mushveli (mousewhale) though, it has legs! And will clamber onto the beach in pursuit!
Or what about death from above? The stökkull (jumper) leaps high into the air and pile-drives boats to pieces.
Meanwhile the skeljungur (shellwhale) sits in the path of boats and lets them get wrecked on its shelly hide…
… while the sverdhvalur (swordwhale) slices through boats with its dorsal fin.
The katthveli (catwhale) is relatively harmless though. It meows.
The same can’t be said of the lyngbakur (heatherback), a classic island fish that lets sailors get on its back and then dives, taking them to a watery grave.
The nauthveli (oxwhale) on the other hand specially targets cattle, attracting them into the sea with its bellow before tearing them apart.
How can you avoid all these murderous whales, like the taumafiskur (bridlefish) here? Any of a number of ways, including getting a steypireydur to help. There are substances, ranging from angelica to sheep dung and chopped fox testicles, that they find abhorrent. And you can distract them with loud noises and barrels.
For more, I assure you this link will answer all your questions.

This is also why fairies were referred to as the ‘Good Neighbors’ and why there are so many nicknames for Satan.
The concept of avoidance speech is endlessly fascinating and rife with plot points for writing, but honestly I’m just thrilled about the EVIL WHALES.
Jews do this with the Name of G-d, which I will not be writing here because You Do Not Do That. But if you’ve ever heard or seen a Jew say “Hashem” when referring to G-d, you’re literally hearing them say “the Name” instead of, well, the Name. Likewise, “Adonai” is not the Name either–it means “lord.”
Incidentally, this is why we no longer know exactly how the Name was pronounced, because it took a few hundred years for vowels to be invented in Hebrew (and they’re still not used in everyday writing), and so the vowels in the Name were never written down. We have a pretty decent guess because part of the Name can be reconstructed from other words, but that’s really all it is–a guess.
And to bring this full circle, this is also why we don’t know what the word for “bear” should actually be in English, but to give you an idea of how off the mark it is, we do know “Arthur” and “Arcturus” both descend from the original actual word.

PSA:
Acetaminophen/paracetamol has a hard stop upper dose limit, above which it becomes extremely toxic.
That limit is 4g (8 “extra strength” (500mg) tablets) in 24 hours (about 2 tablets every 6 hours).
A single dose of 22 extra strength tablets can kill you.
Taking 12 or more tablets per day for more than a week can also kill you (this is about 3 tablets every 6 hours).
Symptoms of overdose take up to 24 hours to manifest, and are fairly difficult to distinguish from other problems. They include abdominal pain (especially right upper quadrant), nausea, malaise, and confusion.
The antidote (n-acetylcystine) must be given within 8hours of ingestion in order to be useful.
After 10 hours the only thing that will work is a liver transplant.
You might think “why would I ever accidentally take so much?”
Well, acetaminophen is in almost everything in the cold/flu/pain aisle. Migraine combos like Excedrin, cold and flu combos like NyQuil, basically anything that says “non-aspirin pain relief”, and anything that’s branded as a fever reducer. It’s all probably acetaminophen/paracetamol.
So the goal of this post is to get you to read the labels on your medications. Because taking taking Tylenol and NyQuil together for a week (like you might if you had the flu) could kill you.
Please don't forget this shit, after it happened to a family member, he died 8 years later because of the continuing health complications even though he survived the initial overdose
I didn't know this for years, and I took so many pills, sometimes 4 at one go, every four hours, like 16 a day, because of endometriosis and migraines. It took a migraine specialist to explain rebound headaches and overdoses when I was in my 40s. Then I went cold turkey on all OTC drugs to get off the cycle. Please, please, if a couple tylenol aren't working for you, talk to your doctor or find one who will listen to you if you can.

Im not autistic about cars or makes or models but I AM autistic about crumple points and field of vision and blindspots and conflict points. do you understand. urban design, anti car dependency/anti car centric infrastructure, and so cars themselves are part of that interest. because car design is urban design. cybertrucks SUCK as cars and also dont function well in infrastructure thats designed to care about people. there are good cars and vehicles that are designed good and fit well with good urban design
THIS is how im autistic about cars
the funniest thing about new american trucks is that i was driving last week and saw someone with a dirt bike in the back and they had to have the tail gate propped open becuase the truck bed wasn’t long enough. the dirt bike was not that big. it was funny. you bought that car justifying to yourself that it’s a work horse, a ute. it doesn’t fit a 250cc bike brother
chiming in to point out that forward visibility in full-size american pickups is uh. not great.
I have PERSONALLY had to move/haul heavy shit a lot and the vans with the short noses beat the hell out of the pickups, except for when you’re off-roading/in mud and in that case it’s a matter of low center of gravity + 4wd that really keeps you moving (which a lot of older trucks, being smaller & lower, do a HELL of a lot better.) I have had to GET OUT OF MY CAR and peer around these behemoth trucks parked on streets so that I can see enough to pull out of a driveway. Pedestrian deaths in the US are going UP, and as a person too short to be seen over the hood of one of these fucking things, they need to NOT be a “consumer ‘car’ of choice”.
If you live in the US contact your representatives about HB 9408, the Pedestrian Protection Act to establish certain safety standards and disclose certain information relating to pedestrians and motor vehicles, and for other purposes. It was introduced by Pennsylvania district 5 representative Mary Scanlon on August 23, 2024
uuuuh okay update on the crush discourse going on in my notes: if a friend has a crush on you and they do tell you they're unfairly pressuring you to reciprocate but if they don't tell you they're being dishonest with you so either way they've ruined the friendship. every day the most anxious minds on earth make amazing philosophical strides on this website.
