really funny to see these questions posed as dystopian fiction when it was just reality in a lot of the US up until maaaaaaybe 50 years ago

like

the real world answers to those questions were

yes

fine or imprisonment

there were multiple movements fighting against fornication laws

having sex with other people while separated was criminalized and could result in civil and criminal punishments

yes

yes to enforce the nuclear family and no, if anything it was intended to *increase* the birth rate since married women were not considering legally capable of saying no to sex with their husbands

so what would a light hearted rom com set in a scenario like this? almost any romcom made in the US before 1960 would qualify

getting one night a year to have societally sanctioned sex with anyone you want would actually be significantly less dystopian than the lived reality of mainstream US culture for large parts of the 20th century

I saw this post an hour before the ‘mystery movie’ screening that turned out to be this movie! It actually makes really good use of its premise in the comedy! It’s a romcom so it is pretty hand-wavy about stuff, as you’d expect, but it actually does put a lot of effort into what that night would feel like on both a personal and societal level.

When He Calls Your Name by Catherynne M. Valente

It's free to read online via Uncanny Magazine, and at 10,619 words it's not too much of a time commitment. Saying too much about it will spoil the fun of the reveal, but it's set on a hot, sticky summer night full of danger and moonlight. There's blood and beauty and women having a conversation, all told in prose that manages to be simultaneously luscious and country-fried. When I figured out the premise, I cackled with glee. Now go read.
