Not to be a killjoy (though it is what I do best) but the unsafe and rough handling of a baby Pygmy hippo in a pretty substandard Thai zoo being meme-ed into something funny and cute really shows just how much groupthink plays into public perception of animal welfare.

Moo Deng shows avoidance, threat displays and stress around her keepers that are constantly man-handling her, blasting her with a hose and harassing her. The enclosure is mostly concrete, which is horrible for her soft feet. There looks to be some substrate but there doesn’t seem to be any areas for wallowing or deep water wading.

There’s also very easy access of this hippo to the public with no places to hide. I’d love if someone could shed more light on the enclosures but from what I’ve seen it’s not great.

Also the free contact and forcing into tubs that the keepers do is only going to create an avoidant and potentially aggressive and dangerous Pygmy hippo.

But the public happily overlook that because she’s cute. It’s a similar attitude with seals too.

Stop rewarding bad husbandry with clout. Baby animals deserve agency and respect and to grow up without getting harassed and feeling the need to defend themselves constantly.

Somewhat unrelated but that recent viral video of the pelican being manhandled in a shitty indoor facility is also driving me insane, but I guess it's funny because pelicans are evil or some shit.

This is the shittiest pelican enclosure I've ever seen, compare it to the second image at an actual zoo.

Note that all of these mouth open behaviours are accompanied by either direct contact bite, avoidance related behaviour (turning body away, being chased, grabbed) and eyes are wide with the whites of her eyes visible.

Compared to examples of mouthing interaction with a baby common hippo like Fiona

Note the softer eyes, no wide bulging eyes or whites showing and no avoidance. Fiona was very young here and you’d expect to see “baby aggression” like frustration ect. But this looks more affiliative towards her keepers than aggressive.

Context helps a lot. In all the pictures of Moo Deng she’s being reached out to, touched or sprayed with a hose. That’s generally not the response you want to have to husbandry in a free contact setting.

And here in is Pygmy Hippo natural social behaviour with each other:

Soft eyes, mouths not completely open (which would be more of a threat display), affiliative interaction between a breeding pair.

Jaw sparring with a youngster in common hippos.

In this context, this is a free interaction with no force involved and is species specific between mum and calf.

I think it’s interesting to see the contrast between Moo Deng’s stress/threat behaviour compared to other common hippos and Pygmy hippo behaviour.

The beauty of Yuri On Ice

After binge-watching Yuri On Ice (again), I was trying so hard to identify the feeling in my chest and my overwhelming need to return to this anime over and over again. Like Yuri, I struggled to come up with a single word to identify that feeling, but I think I finally pinpointed it.

Hope.

What I feel when I watch YOI is HOPE. Over 12 epsiodes we watched characters develop both personally and professionally, each fighting for their own goals but never viciously tearing each other down (except as misguided attempts to motivate each other and simple trash-talking which exists in all sports). It is a world where your worst enemy is yourself, and even that enemy can be vanquished with the right support system.

Kubo gave us a world without hate, a world where the love between two famous men is so accepted that many viewers couldn’t wrap their heads around the fact that it was real. A love that wasn’t extravagant and showy, but was still so real that it left all the fans with swooning hearts and a desire for a love like that. It stopped being love between two men, and started being a simple definition of LOVE no additional qualifiers needed.

In creating this world, where skaters of different backgrounds, from different countries, of different races and ethnicities, of varying ages, and of different sexual orientations not only compete as equals, but respect each other as equals, Kubo gave us an incredible example of how the world could be if we let it. YOI showed us what a world of acceptance would look like, and by God, it is so beautiful.

So, yes, I’m going to call that feeling in my chest a feeling of hope. Hope that someday our real world can be as lovely and accepting as Kubo’s. Hope that someday every person could experience the freedom to be treated as an equal, regardless of any quality. And when I feel the world turning uglier, I will again and again return to the world of YOI, even if only to ignite that hope once again.

So, there's apparently research coming out now about microplastics being found in people's bloodstreams and the possible negative effects of that and I feel the need to get out ahead of the wave of corporate sponsored "be sure to recycle your bottles!" or "ban glitter!" campaigns and remind everyone: It's fishing nets. It's fishing nets. It is overwhelming fishing nets It always has been fishing nets. Unless regulations are changed, it will continue to be fishing nets. The plastic in the ocean in largely discarded nets from industrial fishing. The microplastics are the result of these nets breaking down. The "trash islands" are also, you guessed it. Mostly fishing nets and other discarded fishing industry equipment. Do not allow them to continue to twist the story. Do not come after disabled people who require single use plastics. Do not come after people using glitter in art projects and makeup. These things make up a negligible amount of the issue compared to corporate waste, specifically in the fishing industry. Do not let them shift the blame to the individual so they can continue to destroy the planet and our bodies without regulation.

Industries are incredibly resistant to taking responsibility for their own waste, to the point where “consumers are responsible for industrial waste” is somehow considered a sensible, ethical, worthy sentence.

It is actually perfectly reasonable to say that “industries are responsible for industrial waste” and “the effects of industry can, should and must be fixed by industry” and “Industry can, should and must be held responsible for its impacts on the commons, such as air, water, oceans and land.”

Yuuri is Japan’s Ace in all senses of the word

Yuuri is not just Japan’s top male skater, but their top skater period. Compare the Japanese Skating Federation website in YOI to the actual one when YOI was airing. 

Notice that the real one splits it up between Yuzu and Satoko, giving both of them coverage on the website’s graphics?   

In YOI, Yuuri is the ONLY figure skater shown. He’s Japan’s Ace, 100%. Not just in men’s, but in all disciplines of figure skating. 

Obviously Satton is not as winning as Yuzu, but the JSF considered her successful on a close enough level to showcase her. There’s no figure skater but Yuuri on the other hand, on the YOI JSF graphics. Although they do, judging by the image above, have at least two women competing at a high senior international level, they aren’t as successful as Yuuri. 

There’s not even a potential argument imo that the animators just didn’t want to draw another image, because they did draw two different images of Yuuri to use on the banners. They even reused the speed skater art on the sidebars, which is unlike the actual site, but they made sure to draw a separate, new Yuuri for the sidebar.

There’s a tendency in fandom to not acknowledge what Yuuri’s level of celebrity is. Even from fans who acknowledge his success, it’s rare. Because we see him in his hometown, where people kind of leave him be, and because Victor is SO famous, I think this is exacerbated in fandom.

But he is undoubtedly very famous and is a big celebrity in his home country. He’d certainly do a lot of endorsements and he’s definitely got a summer schedule full of ice shows. Would he be rich? No, not yet. Skating is that expensive (plus I personally imagine that he sends money to the onsen). You really have to get to an extremely high level of success to start making a lot of money. But he is probably comfortable. 

He is the most famous (currently competing) figure skater in Japan though, and, it seems, their most successful.

something a lot of traditional artists don’t realize is how important it is to store your art in something acid-free, and it’s something I didn’t think about until I started working in a frame shop and saw all the damaged artwork people bring in.

Acid burn can take a couple decades to become obvious (a lot of the things I receive with bad acid burn are from 10+ years ago), so it doesn’t seem like a big deal until suddenly all your art is permanently stained yellow/brown and brittle. The major culprits are tape, mats, frames, newsprint paper, and CARDBOARD. If they aren’t ph neutral, they’re going to leech acid into your paper and discolor it.

you will not believe the amount of times I’ve opened up someone’s old matted art to find nasty crusty tape that’s left dark rectangles:

or pictures that have orange margins from where the mat laid against it:

Storing your art in cardboard long-term is setting it up to be brittle and gross in the future. Scotch masking tape is your art’s enemy.

Cotton is naturally acid-free, so it’s good to work with cotton art paper and mats. Most plastic sleeves are also acid-free. Sometimes acid-free options cost a bit more, but considering how dramatically it can affect your artwork, it can be quite worth it.

my favorite part personally about Yuri on Ice is how they decided to have two characters named Yuri for literally NO other reason than to be confusing. And when Yuri #2 points out that this is confusing he gets told “you’re right that IS a problem, your name is Spaghettio now” and everyone just straight-faced ROLLS with it for the rest of the series. Including Spaghettio.
