Send me to Mars with party supplies before next august 5th
No guys you don’t understand.
The soil testing equipment on Curiosity makes a buzzing noise and the pitch of the noise changes depending on what part of an experiment Curiosity is performing, this is the way Curiosity sings to itself.
So some of the finest minds currently alive decided to take incredibly expensive important scientific equipment and mess with it until they worked out how to move in just the right way to sing Happy Birthday, then someone made a cake on Curiosity’s birthday and took it into Mission control so that a room full of brilliant scientists and engineers could throw a birthday party for a non-autonomous robot 225 million kilometres away and listen to it sing the first ever song sung on Mars*, which was Happy Birthday.
This isn’t a sad story, this a happy story about the ridiculousness of humans and the way we love things. We built a little robot and called it Curiosity and flung it into the star to go and explore places we can’t get to because it’s name is in our nature and then just because we could, we taught it how to sing.
That’s not sad, that’s awesome.
*this is different from the first song ever played on mars (Reach For The Stars by Will.I.Am) which happened the year before, singing is different from playing
This is humanity
Happy Birthday, Curiousity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity.
Happy birthday, Curiosity!
Happy birthday, Curiosity!💕
Happy Birthday, Curiosity
racism literally bleeds through the cracks of everything and if you dare to even barely point it out everyone will kill you
racism runs so deeply in people that if you call it out you are calling out them, and instead of sitting down and examining their own racism they lash out at you for being sooo meansies to them. you don't even have to be talking about anyone's racist behavior in particular because it makes racists so uncomfortable they will come forward themselves and act like you're targeting them specifically. it's okay when they do it because they're doing it in the correct way, in the nice way! they don't mean it like that. in fact they're actually being progressive. you're the cruel one for acting like their racist behavior is racist. you're the problem if you're bothered by their comfort racism. you're the bitchy colored person who makes eeeverything about racism when it so clearly isn't. i'm fucking sick of this.
if you use your voice to uplift and protect others, thank you.
if you use your voice to defend people from harm by their own peers, thank you.
if you use your voice to remind people they are worthy and loved, thank you.
if you use your voice to share a hopeful story when people need it most, thank you.
if you use your voice to admire others' strengths, and accept their weaknesses, thank you.
if you use your voice to add kindness and goodness to this world, thank you; thank you for being you in a world that is too often confusing, stressful, or cruel.
the world will always need people like you. anyone who tells you something different is only projecting their weaknesses onto you. if someone devalues your heart, that is not your fault.
you have done well so far. thank you for being here. i hope you can see just how much your presence means to others and get to cherish those moments of connection forever, even long after they've happened.
The Revolutionary War art piece, especially as a celebration of the 4th of July, especially especially as a celebration of the 250th anniversary, is such a blatantly obvious Bad Move that it becomes fascinating that it managed to happen in the first place.
Not only does it have the most glaring element of poor taste of celebrating the United States while the government is sliding into fascism, and ignoring the legacy of atrocities the government has carried out in the past 250 years, but it also, less importantly, manages to ignore any attempt at making sense.
Romanticising and valorising the Revolutionary War and idolising the Founding Fathers is one of the major elements of the nationalist propaganda the Trump Administration (and Republicans in general) have employed. (I highly recommend Alexander Avila’s video on the Prager U sponsored “Freedom Trucks”. holy shit).
And here RnF are, doing a bonus art of Lenore and Annabel in a romantic little scuffle beneath fireworks in the military garb of both sides, on an abandoned hillside. Cute! Wholesome! Nothing to think about here!! Just add a quick little “No Kings” caption and allude to a “the British are coming” joke for a bit of cheeky fun.
Nevermind the fact that using the Colonial era (uh oh, wonder why it’s called that, surely not because of the colonialism both sides participated in and fought over profiting from) as a backdrop for uncomplicated Good Old American Imagery is exactly the same thing the Republicans in office are doing. Ignore it shhhhh.
And as the cherry on top, it also completely ignores the misogyny RnF primarily focus on at the expense of addressing anything else. Because why the hell is Annabel in a uniform? In what world would her being in that uniform make sense? It sure isn’t the one they set that piece in. But of course we need to be able to see her legs in pants for that cute teasing scuffling pose to work, which directly means she’s in the uniform to eroticise it. What a wonderful thing, eroticising the Colonial era British Military Uniform. No baggage tied to that at all nosirree. And we’re just ignoring that she’s got her full long hair as usual, not even a case of Annabel also disguising her gender to have the same rights as a man (to fight for colonialism) nope. Just. She’s in the uniform Because.
It’s almost incredible (negative), how RnF managed to make a piece that both does the work of turning the Revolutionary War into romanticised propaganda for the government while also, by virtue of it being a piece of lesbian art, making something they’d hate. I’m absolutely baffled. Why was this made.
rnf drawing lennabel as cutesy revolutionary war soldiers is really tone deaf to me. like you know they were fighting that war over who gets to keep slaughtering native americans and enslaving black people to work that stolen land, right? i guess i shouldn’t be surprised considering their proclivity to ignore racism in their work
also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.
It's nuts how common it is to not allow children to be angry, even (especially) in households where adults are angry all the time. As a child I knew my own anger was unacceptable--not just expressing it outwardly but feeling it at all. So now as an adult my immediate reaction to my own anger is often to feel guilt instead of like. Noticing when someone is being rude or unfair or my boundaries are being violated or whatever. fucked up.
god forbid Black women have fun
Black woman invents or popularises a phrase -> it enters the vernacular and circulates widely amongst Black and nonblack people -> people removed from the phrase's initial context read it too literally, do not interpret it with sensitivity, assume that the ideas expressed when people use it are shallow / "over"-sexualised / problematic in some way or another that mirrors their feelings about Black people as a whole -> there is a backlash where a supposedly more 'thoughtful,' 'subversive,' etc. alternative to the initial phrase is offered, implying that the initial phrase contained none of that complexity within it to begin with -> rinse & repeat
I lowkey hate when programs talk to me in a friendly way. "don't worry, nearly there!" Shut up. It should say "loading 64.3% completed. Do not turn off device" and absolutely nothing else. You arent my friend you are computer. Act like it
@alexmey-does-an-arts Correct.
one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- there’s this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. She’s convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note he’s every played. He denies this. /]
of course, the best part of any character's corruption arc is their cool new outfit
falling asleep during the day: slipping away on a clouds so easy
falling asleep at night: I heard an ant gasp downstairs
When you meet Edward Elric he gives off the impression that he's the short-tempered hot-headed "violence is the answer to all life's questions" kind of protagonist, and it's in fact incredible character craft that he's actually the character who ends the series with a negative-3 kill count.
people killed: 0
direct orders of "you really really need to kill this guy" ignored: 1
ongoing murders being committed by Ed's own friends/colleagues that Ed got in the way of to specifically stop that murder from happening: 2
God's worst soldier Edward Elric. Showed up as the youngest member of the Amestrian army, took millions of dollars from them, never followed a single order, helped dismantle their fascist regime, left with a lower kill count than he arrived with, then fucked off to go be a house-husband. Character of all time.
You know, when you said "negative-3 kill count," I, who haven't seen the anime, thought, "He resurrected 3 people?????" But I'm seeing here on the wiki that apparently resurrection in this anime is a terrible idea.

yeah but have u ever calmed down a scared animal gently and patiently before. have u ever carefully listened to their body language and adjusted urself accordingly.
it's pretty great. animals are beings too, the communication is just nonverbal and dont have a human social culture. you can communicate back to them through co-regulation and body language.
you quiet yourself and speak gently. make your movements smoother. give them time to react to touch. sometimes you make yourself smaller to seem less threatening. other times that gets interpreted by the animal as a preparation for attack. depends on the animal.
animals are so cool and its a fulfilling experience to be a safe human for animal. humans are also animals and thats kinda the point. awareness of both humanity and animality. helps communicate with animals. and calm and soothe them.
