Sometimes i think about how Nie Huaisang was perfectly content acting like a fool his whole life under the protection of his older brother but then Jin Guangyao just HAD to kill that older brother who was Huaisang’s only family member left in such a cruel and brutal betrayal. His body wasn’t even buried a complete corpse. No wonder Nie Huaisang orchestrated such a thorough public humiliation and made that man die on Lan Xichen’s sword.

very silly post but i wanted to unwind a bit so i thought i would rate chinese endearments!
宝贝：classic, casual endearment. i call my cats this, has a similar feel to "babe" for me. 4/5, one point deducted because it's pretty basic.
宝宝：like a cutesier version of 宝贝, i would never call a romantic partner this, but it's great for pets and children. 3.5/5, points deducted because it can sound kind of trite or cringey.
亲爱的：much more formal, has a similar feel to "beloved" or "darling" to me. arguably my favourite endearment because it literally means "[one] who is an intimate love". 5/5 if an s/o called me this i would melt.
老[姓名]：this can come off as overtly lovey-dovey at times but it's also really common among married or long-term couples. it doesn't really have an english comparison but personally i think it's very sweet. it can also be used teasingly which i enjoy. 4.5/5 with 0.5 points taken off because it can sound kind of old-fashioned.
老婆/老公：an even more married version of the above; this feels much more teasing to me, though. 4/5 with one point deducted because unfortunately 老公 can also mean eunuch (oops).
(老)狐狸(精)：i've only ever heard this in dramas as a reference to a man, but it's meant to call someone sly or cunning. can be admonishing, but can also be an affectionate reproval. can also be used for women, but then to me it comes off as a bit more judgemental, so 4/5.
小哥：technically a descriptor of a young man, but i'm personally attached to this as a term of endearment, and if someone called me this i would be smitten. i think it has been gaining some popularity among chinese sapphics, especially butch lesbians/T's? but unfortunately i don't.............really use social media so i can't confirm this.
姐姐/哥哥：these are technically originally terms for older brothers/sisters, but they're also used for people of the same generation who are older than you, and can be used in a flirty way. 4/5 only because non-chinese english speakers can get kind of weird about them.
啊-/小-：personally i prefer the 啊- suffix over 小- because 小- sounds like you're talking to a child to me, but i'm aware this is very regional. not overly romantic, but can be very sweet, so i'm giving it a 3.5/5.
those are all the ones i can think of off the top of my head, but if you have any others you can think of, let me know!
my favorite ship dynamic is betrayal. not when they betray each other but when one or both of them turn against their cause, their principles and/or loved ones for the other. bonus points if the person they're abandoning everything for didn't remotely expect it. ultimate declaration of love. "you mean more to me than everything i ever believed in. i am more loyal to you than my conscience. i love you more than the thing i would die for."

the contrast between cezhou relationship reveal to their parents is so funny like with xiao chiye's family he just casually came out of the closet boasting "the most goodlooking man in the whole of dazhou is my wife!" to his dad who threw horse shit at him, meanwhile with shen zechuan's dad it was a dramatic reveal of ji gang finding out that they've been having premarital sex and consequently beating up this hoodlum xiao chiye for digging the most beautiful cabbage in dazhou

i wanna talk about the earring symbolism in qiang jin jiu. li jianting's earring was given to her by xiangyun, who brought her up to be a prostitute. she saw xiangyun wear her earrings and make up, trying her best to please xiao chiye, who was indifferent and barely glanced at her. the men degraded li jianting, and everyone treated her like a cattle. as a result of her traumatic childhood, she hated herself and felt disgusted by her body. the earring became a symbol of her life as a "livestock".
shen zechuan hated himself too, but only because the blood of shen wei flows in him. he was brought up by ji gang, who loves him and takes care of him, who only ever wants shen zechuan to stay safe and grow up to be happy, despite what ambition qi huilian and shen zechuan himself might have. shen zechuan wears an earring, but it was given by and worn for xiao chiye, the man who loves him, it was a symbol of shen zechuan's love and willingness to indulge xiao chiye.
that's the big difference between li jianting and shen zechuan. they're both smart, ruthless, and great rulers. but shen zechuan understands love, while li jianting never knew it.
Case File Compendium / Bing An Ben (BAB) SPOILERS
u know what strikes me about this novel? it's that there is no curing He Yu's mental illness. there is no undoing the damage of the years of child neglect and abuse that He Yu went through. falling in love with Xie Qingcheng did not make him a sane, "normal" person. he is still a crazy, manipulative, deeply flawed human being by the end of the novel, and what's even crazier is that, Xie Qingcheng could accept all this. he is probably the only person in the world who could ever accept He Yu completely, even after everything He Yu had done, and after everything they've gone through.

I made this meme way before I finished the novel and I have to say I'm surprised at how accurate this is 💀
bing an ben / case file compendium is not about a wholesome romantic relationship. if u read this book expecting he yu and xie qingcheng, two broken people who have gone through so much pain and trauma in their lives, to someday be able to "fix" each other, u won't get what u want. this isn't an "i can fix him" novel, it is an "i will join him in his insanity" love story.
