There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.
How to draw underwater settings: make everything floaty and weightless. Done! ✅ Unless you're a geek like me and want to learn all about how to paint the lighting: the highlights of the ripples, the bluish glow, the reflections.. there's a lot to think about but it's so satisfying once you get it right!
I painted these for last month's Patreon challenge on underwater lighting! If you like drawing challenges, join us: we’re studying wrinkles and folds this month. It's time to walk away from those face-smoothing filters and draw some textured skin!
Does it count as 'sword in the stone' if it looks more like 'sword in the cairn'...?

people thinking we can’t let dragons walk around London because of the size of the streets or the citizenry pissing themselves in fear, WRONG, the real reason is dragons talk too loud and you would never escape the sound of Perscitia arguing with the finance bros about bitcoin

New chapter of The Emperor’s Greatest Conquest (E, 183,832k, 42/?) is up!
Laurence does not turn away from the window as Napoleon enters the room. He must not have heard the footsteps, too absorbed in contemplating the beauty of the Emperor’s work, the gracious pavilions, the broad streets, the well-tended and loyal beasts. That is the only explanation; Laurence is ever courteous, even when held as a guest of honour in a land not his own. It gives Napoleon a chance to study Laurence in profile; the proud raise of the chin, the intelligence in the gaze, the slight frown of the lips. To any other, perhaps, his face would be unreadable. But to the Emperor…he knows. He knows the war that wages in that noble breast, of loyalty and desire. Today, Napoleon vows, Today. Today, I will taste a tongue that has never told a lie. Today, I will have him.
#Napoleon x Laurence #Napolliam #rpf #things are finally getting spicy! #don’t like don’t read #next chapter will post after this one gets at least 500 comments

Longwing captains in books written by men: The wind tousled her auburn locks and parted her shirt, revealing the creamy hills of her bosom, as she stood on the neck of her dragon. She sighed, fearing such would be the only caresses she would ever know. When, oh, when would the admiral look upon her, and see, not a Captain of the aerial corps, but a woman? A soft and tender woman, with a woman’s needs and a woman’s heart?
Longwing captains in real life: I think I left my neckcloth in the tent of the courier I pegged last night

Mantis is SUCH a pretty bird, and because Bug raised her, she's also the best of both worlds- wants to be pet by humans, easily hangs out with the other birds. Lets me put 4-leaf clovers on her head like a hat so I can take cute photos of her.
Felt compelled to draw this magical scene <3
my goodness your artwork is beautiful! It's GLOWING!
i've reblogged parts of the comic a few times but don't think i've ever really said anything about it so i'll take a moment to do so now. if you're not already reading max graves' What Happens Next then you really should be. in the about section, graves describes his own comic as being about:
the aftermath of a murder
posting on the internet
the midwestern united states
being gay and transgender
which is completely accurate but also does not do a lot to convey just how good of a job the comic does at being about these things. It's able to deftly interrogate the relationships between queerness and isolation, isolation and criminalization, criminalization and sensationalism, sensationalism and Posting, and Posting and queerness with a sort of resigned lucidity that never devolves into preaching. not an easy feat when working with this subject matter.
The story centers around a cast of characters in proximity to a murder that has already been solved. There is no mystery here, other than 'how did it come to this'. Our main character is Milo, twentysomething my little pony enthusiast and murderer's accomplice, now struggling to stumble into early adulthood after 8 years of institutionalization in the wake of his conviction. As a teenager, Milo dismembered the corpse of fellow homeschooler Hayley Gorski at the behest of her murderer and his best friend, Griffin. Other prominent people of interest are the true crime youtubers making content about Milo's situation, the victim's younger sister who is converting her grief into misguided political activism, and the serial killer-stanning penpal/boyfriend of the still imprisoned Griffin who takes an interest in Milo in no small part due to his fixation on the intimacy of sharing a murder with someone. The rest of the cast is fleshed out with these people's friends, families, partners, colleagues, and acquaintances.
It would be difficult to describe any of these characters as likeable, but it would impossible to describe any of them as unsympathetic. With it's heavy reliance on extended flashback sequences, WHN has a real knack for introducing characters that could easily come across as hyperbolic caricatures in less skilled hands, and then retroactively contextualizing them into completely grounded and believable depictions of types of people that are not often afforded that honesty. The comic's unflinching portrayal of the nastiest aspects of many of these characters and the subcultures they reside in is never at the expense of compassion or humanity. It always feels that we are wallowing alongside them, rather than ogling at them from above. At least, to me it does.
As of posting this, the comic has 1,325 pages, but it's drawn in a single-panel format with a relatively very low text density, which makes it an impressively breezy read despite the heaviness of the subject matter and quality of the writing. Check it out if that sounds up your alley, and maybe even check it out if it doesn't sound up your alley because i think this work has the potential to provide a lot of bang for your buck in terms of horizon-expanding.
Fresh book bingo post for April/May!
I've decided I'm doing Bumps, as in, if I read another book that fits a square and like it better, so -- Idlewild. Fucked-up queer teenagers grapple (poorly) with their gender/sexuality in 2002 New York (and looking back on everything from their 30s). I'm about 10 years younger than these characters and did not go to Quaker school in New York, but the mid-aughts teen-ness of it all was so real. Highly recommend.
2026 Debut: Apparently, Sir Cameron Needs to Die -- I'm only a little embarrassed to admit that I bought the cat blog old man yaoi Snape/Lockhart book BUT it was really funny. Very unique voice/concepts, and characters that are endearingly strange and committed to their bullshit. Would recommend.
Historical Fantasy: The Fox Wife -- kind of a detective story following a grieving fox spirit mother looking to avenge the death of her daughter. It's set at the tail end of the Qing dynasty (early 1900s), so that informs the setting/background, but honestly I would've liked more history! It wove together a lot of intersecting threads from different characters, and I loved the protagonist's fox energy - she's curious and determined but also often impulsive and reckless. My one criticism would be that sometimes it felt afraid to be too subtle, like it would create this beautiful subtle implication you'd only catch if you're paying attention to details, but then turn around a few pages later and state outright what it was implying. But overall, would recommend.
Read it & do it: Braids, buns & twists! -- I wandered through a small library branch recently and wanted to check something out to support their circulation numbers, and wasn't vibing with any of their scifi, but I DID find this hair tutorials book and I did learn how to do a fishtail braid from it. I can't say that I "read" every tutorial in it, and many of them were repetitive and/or strange-looking (imo), but I did learn something new. And it gave me my first bingo!
Romance: Heated Rivalry -- I libby'd this to see what all the fuss was about and honestly am still not sure I get it. I guess the smut is well-written, and the characters are funny. I hear the show is better?
Honorable mention: Cinder House, a very sweet Cinderella story by Freya Marske. Atmospheric, with a strong main character and a solid bittersweet ending. Not quite gothic enough or romantic enough for either square.
