Ultimate form follows function thing — it’s all rounded because you’re meant to hold it between your thighs, out in your little life raft, while you’re turning the crank (which both powers the transmitter and automatically sends an SOS signal).

(Because radio on the emergency frequencies works best with a long antenna up in the air, it came with a long wire and two ways of getting elevation for it: a big balloon, for low wind, and a box kite, for high wind. From what I gather, the balloon came with, at different times, either a cylinder of compressed helium or a can of a chemical for producing hydrogen.)
