a baby at work the other day gave me the meanest look i've ever seen as it got lifted out of a cesarean. 1 second old and already hating. you can't teach that.
I appreciate the way hitting the word "cesarean" forces me to go back and reevaluate the earlier phrase "at work"
Why antisemites always have a blast—and how Jews enhance the experience
Today’s digital culture has monetized these pleasures. Online platforms are engineered to maximize engagement by maximizing emotional reward. Antisemitism is extraordinarily well suited to such systems. Platforms amplify the thrill of forbidden knowledge, insider language, memes, and collective outrage while making them instantly accessible and endlessly repeatable. The digital dogpile—coordinated mass attack on a single Jewish target—is the mob made digital. Like the analogue mobs that preceded them, these too are often gleeful and public. But unlike earlier forms, participation no longer requires gathering in the street or much physical effort at all. The mob no longer needs to gather, it simply needs to log on.
Flooding Jewish journalists’ social media feeds with Holocaust jokes and “oven” memes; defacing synagogues, menorahs, or Jewish community centers with swastikas—often timed to holidays; filming antisemitic taunts of visibly Jewish people and posting them online for laughs; turning classic antisemitic tropes into viral “ironic” content or remix videos—none of these are coherent responses to a supposedly sophisticated international cabal controlling the world’s economy, politics, media, migration, and satellites. They are rituals of humiliation. The point is not resistance. The point is pleasure.
I saw a video today from a chronically ill woman about the fact you can feel so guilty when doing fun things.
She talks about how, as a kid, you learn to finish work before you can play and that you take this with you into adulthood. So you keep the mindset of having to finish 'have to' tasks/chores before being allowed to 'play'.
But when you're chronically ill, this is literally impossible! If you'd do that it would be all work and never play. That wouldn't be healthy at all. We need to remind ourselves of this. We don't need to feel guilty for doing something fun!
"There is no reason for anyone to be struggling in the wealthiest country in the world and we need to fight to make sure that wealth is distributed equitably" - no argument here
"Everyone in America is desperately poor and working multiple jobs just to scrape by because mysterious elites are conspiring to keep us too exhausted and poor to revolt against them" - Neither part of that is true and you're verging dangerously close to conservative conspiracy theories about (((them)))
"Modern America is the WORST country to live in, every other country on earth has it better than us, we are the poorest and most oppressed populace to ever exist up to and including slaves and victims of genocide" - I think the websites you're getting this language from are harming you
imagine if people actually took romantic consent seriously. wouldn't it be fucking awesome. i know they never will, but just. take a moment and imagine it with me
no more "just give them a chance, maybe you'll end up liking them!", no more "if you're going to reject someone, at least apologize to them!", no more shaming people for breaking up/divorcing, no more demonizing people for rejecting other peoples' romantic advances, no more shoving romance in romance repulsed peoples' face on purpose to provoke us, no more "i know we agreed to just be friends with benefits, but i thought you were going to fall in love with me eventually!", no more "i can fix them" when the only thing "wrong" with them is that they want to fuck without dating.
wouldn't it be nice?
hey. if you want to actually change minds, don't be unkind to the people you're trying to convince. or you CAN but in most scenarios you'll alienate a potential ally. what matters more to you? taking your anger out on someone? or helping them actually understand the situation at hand?
"wow you're fucking stupid OBVIOUSLY x isn't y. can you learn to read or something" <- changes no minds, the person you're talking to will struggle to agree with you because by extension they would have to agree that they're stupid for being wrong, total happiness for everyone involved is through the FLOOR. in the NEGATIVES. no one wins, even if you feel good in the moment.
but....
"hey there, I understand that you're very passionate about this, but the most recent studies out there show that x isn't y. I just wanted to let you know, because you clearly care a lot about the subject!" <- I have seen this change minds firsthand, it's easier for the person to agree with you because they're not feeling defensive over an insult, and total happiness for everyone involved either stays the same or goes UP. everyone wins. if they're still being silly about it, at least you can walk away knowing that you tried. and often times, even if they show no change in the moment, that kind of interaction stays with people. they'll ruminate on it. you might have helped incite a later change of heart.
all that being said, conserve your energy and efforts. if someone repeatedly shows that they have no intention of considering any of your words, disengage! walk away! you CAN change minds but you CAN'T change everyone. "is this a constructive use of my time?" is a question worth asking yourself when you catch yourself talking to someone who is attempting to animorph into a brick wall. patience and kindness are awesome weapons but you do have to pick your battles. [:
hate when people think the only archetype possible for a male sidekick to a female protagonist is a soft boi and/or himbo. like the implication there is that the only reason a man would ever defer to a woman’s authority is if he was a bumbling idiot. love male supporting characters who are smart and strong and confident and can step up when necessary but still kind and humble enough to let someone else take the lead most of the time
ok another good point here
this pride month we’re all going to be radically pro transgender. or else.
hey so this means radically pro ALL transgender. don’t put limitations on this. all trans people are radically accepted here.
Judith Butler, philosopher: ‘If you sacrifice a minority like trans people, you are operating within a fascist logic’
Feels like a good time to remind certain people that this is coming from Judith Butler, who is not just a leading feminist philosopher, but also THE COFOUNDER OF QUEER THEORY
The literal cofounder of queer theory as an academic field says that abandoning trans people is fascist logic.
The voices in our community trying to exclude us may be loud, but they are not right, and they do not speak for the community as a whole or our history or anything at all.
Trans people belong here. We always have, and we always will.
This beautiful outdoor choir performance is an act of rebellion, and efforts are underway to make it illegal to do this.
The choir is part of the larger organization Women of the Wall, a multidenominational, international group of women who are campaigning for the right of women to pray at the Kotel in Jerusalem in an egalitarian way -- to sing, read Torah, and to pray out loud, taking up space, as women.
The Kotel is currently administered by a highly Orthodox rabbinate, which I suspect would prefer it if women just . . . didn't pray there at all. Grudgingly, they allow a teeny tiny official prayer space for women, who are expected to be very quiet and Orthodox about their prayer. The Orthodox men who take up most of the space at the Kotel haaaaaaaaaaate when people pray in non-Orthodox styles there, and they especially loathe it when women do that, to the point where they will physically attack people like the Women of the Wall, by throwing things like chairs and hot coffee at them while they're having services.
The Israeli government has been making noises about setting up an egalitarian prayer area at the Kotel for ages and ages, and noises is all we're going to get from them for the foreseeable future. Therefore, Women of the Wall, and their choir of beautiful Kol Isha voices will continue to campaign, to pray, to read Torah, and to sing for the right of all Jews to encounter the Divine in our most holy place.
I wouldn't think someone could make such a bigoted statement and then repeatedly make it worse, but he managed.
Also, I doubt any of his supporters would be mad about his being homophobic or running a scam.
I think it’s really insidious how a lot of the western media actively goes out of its way to only platform antisemitic Muslims. There are lots and lots of lovely Muslim people who are outraged by antisemitism and standing up to it. In New York, there was literally just a Muslim women’s group that protested your ousted Mamdani’s office against his antisemitic behavior. But it got zero coverage outside of Jewish press (and Fox News did cover it but only because it was a protest against a democrat.) and it’s not just in the US. I see it in western European countries too. Extremists get platformed, and the many non-extremist people don’t. the media contributes to creating a certain kind of divisive narrative.
I couldn't agree more. A lot of media loves nothing more than painting Muslims and Jews as eternal, intractable enemies and Muslims especially as dangerous and never compatible with Western, liberal values. It's absolutely vile.
So because this apparently pisses some people off I'm gonna say it fucking again.
In a world where preformative apathy and cruelty are expected, Kindness IS Punk. Punk is more than just a music genre, the word has always had ties to being against authority. From the days it meant a sex worker to today.
My mom likes to tell me about how when I was a little kid riding public transport with her I'd always smile and giggle and chat with weird old ladies who smelled like cat pee and homeless folks and strangers dressed in bizarre outfits but any time a tidy and respectable businessman in a suit and tie waved at me I'd immediately clam up, and she takes a great deal of pride in my supposed inherentability to clock personalities but the truth is I do vaguely remember those bus rides, and it was never about the clothes or the hair or the smell, but more because everyone "strange" asked interesting questions and listened to what I had to say and seemed to think about what I said while the neat and tidy and rigid folks only ever acted like they were going through the motions, which was boring as hell and also pretty annoying
Well-to-do finance manager with tidy shoes: "Why hello, sweetheart. Can you say 'hi'? Aren't you cute. Are you on a trip with your mom?"
4 year old me: why must we do this
Fantastic old woman in the leopard print coat: "Why yes, my tooth IS real silver! Nobody ever asks me that. Do you like cats?"
4 year old me, suddenly paying attention: Finally, A Person Of Intellect
I could go fully into explaining how the "it was promised to them 3,000 years ago" jokes fundamentally are based on a misunderstanding of the Torah because the "joke" would not work otherwise.
However at the end of the day its just calling jews greedy. Like people whip it out about everything and anything that it literally is just the socially acceptable way to call jews greedy. Ya know, a stereotype shoved on us for decades.
At least come up with something original instead of reheating the same nachos that nazi Germany reheated.
