What if Maysilee survived in the Hunger Games?
I've imagined a story about this by myself. After breaking up with Haymitch on the cliff, Maysilee does not meet the pink bird. She travels alone but luckily does not encounter other tributes. Then two other tributes die, and Haymitch, Maysilee, and a girl from District 1 are left. When Maysilee is up in the tree, she witnesses her and sees that she is heading toward the cliff. Then Haymitch and the girl meet. They fight, and Haymitch uses a force field to kill her, just like the original story goes. Maysilee is agonizing and decides to go back to the cliff where Haymitch is. When she got there, he was on the verge of death. Haymitch was stabbed with an ax and his guts popped out, collapsed on the floor, and he couldn't even get up. Maysilee holds his hand and stays with him until he dies. Then the cannon goes off. She becomes the victor.
Capitol will not appreciate her victory. Haymitch used the force field to kill Capitol’s favorite career tribute, and Maysilee is from his district. There will be no direct pressure on Maysilee, but Haymitch’s family and his girlfriend will not be able to avoid death. When Maysilee recognizes this, she feels guilty. She falls into alcohol and cigarettes and lives a life similar to the original Haymitch.
I want Maysilee to think of Haymitch when she sees Katniss. She's going to be desperate to save her. It’s even more so because Haymitch is overlapping. Maybe out of guilt, I want her to make up her mind to never let this girl die.
