Born without a groove 😔
Write Your Story
I just showed my 11-year-old son how many coffee shop AUs there are on AO3.
Why?
He sat down the other day to write a Minecraft story about three kids who go through a portal in their back yard and end up in the world of Minecraft where they have to battle all the big bosses (I didn’t even realize there WERE big bosses in Minecraft but that’s beside the point). He wrote three chapters with a little input from me – his first beta – and y'all?
He was fucking excited. To be writing a story.
Today he came home from school and seemed a little down, so I asked him about it only to find out that some little asshole at his school told him, “There is already a Minecraft story.”
Me: Okay? So what?
Lucifer: If there’s already a story, no one will read mine.
Immediately, I dragged him in and pulled up my AO3 account. My boys know I write fanfiction, so I showed him my account and how many subscribers I have. Then I showed him how many Teen Wolf stories there are. And then, because it seemed like the perfect analogy, I said, “What if I wrote a story where two characters meet in a coffee shop and fall in love? No werewolves, nothing at all to do with the actual Teen Wolf universe. Just Stiles and Derek meet in a coffeeshop and fall in love.”
He laughed.
I showed him Mornings Aren’t For Everyone. Showed him how many hits it had, how many kudos, how many lovely comments.
Then I said, “So do you think, if anyone else wrote a story about those exact same characters meeting in a coffee shop and falling in love… would anyone read it?”
He laughed and said, “No because you already did.”
So I clicked on the Sterek tag and refined to coffee shop AU. His mind was blown to see that they ALL had thousands of hits and kudos and comments. Then I clicked on JUST the coffee shop AU tag and showed him all the fics across all the fandoms written by countless different people.
I’m going to tell you all now what I told him because it applies to everyone.
Write your story. It doesn’t matter that someone else has written a story about that subject. They didn’t write YOUR story. Only you can do that.
And I want to read your story.
Holy crap, this is A+ parenting and such a good lesson.
The thing about the destiel news meme is that I actually think it's great.
It does let you know that something has gone on in the world. But it's such a short format that it could never even pretend to give you all the relevant information about that thing. It usually provides less detail than the average headline, so it's not actually reporting, it's more like shouting a head's up across a crowded room. Still lets you know that something has happened though.
The very fact that it's a goofy and irreverent fandom meme also serves as a perpetual reminder that using social media to get news is a bad idea. Now that you know something has occurred, go read an actual article from a real source to verify it and get the details. It's an alert system with a format that never lets you forget that alerts are not articles, and that this website is not beholden to any kind of journalistic integrity.
I love it, the comments on destiel news memes are almost always full of people saying that they saw it and then rushed off to go verify the news with a reputable source. Do you know how often more "serious" format news stuff on this site just leaves people complacently certain that they've been given accurate info? Way too often. I wish half as many of those news updates had people commenting that they left tumblr to go double check it.
we DO grow old and happy. btw.
And you find love and it stays with you.
Older women are so, so beautiful, and older trans women are no exception. Celebrate the beauty of our elders! Celebrate trans beauty!
I wanted to share some more of these, specifically trans women of color. The images I'm posting are from a project called To Survive On This Shore and it's an interview project. I am only posting a handful so it's so worth checking out!
This is Linda, 60
Alexis, 64
Helena, 63
Kendrah, 72 (!!)
Tasha, 65
It was deeply healing to me to discover this project. The site has selected photos and attached interviews and it's definitely worth your time. I didn't include any because the focus of this post imo is transfems but there are a lot of beautiful interviews with transmasc people too if you're interested! But that'll have to be another post 💖
for those interested, the photographer is Jess T. Dugan. The link to this particular project is as follows:

i recently saw this comment on reddit and it made me tear up. Transitioned at 40 and is 82! And her long-lost sister loves her as a sister!!!
Reasons to boycott Nolan's The Odyssey (that I know of so far):
They shot in the illegally occupied Western Sahara as reported by Middle East Eye (thanks to @fuckyeahdavidandyonatan for bringing that up)
They dumped their props into a protected area of the Italian sea after shooting (thanks to @godslop for finding the article in English)
Zendaya wearing looted 3000 years old Iranian earrings for the premiere of the movie + having her stylist fly on a private jet just to get her a dress for the premiere in London
No Greek actors in a movie about Greek heritage
While people mentioned that Anne Hathaway was flown in to the set every day, apparently it was not on a private jet but on a helicopter that was being used anyway to fly in equipment.
None of these things are new in Hollywood or exclusive to the Odyssey, its director or its actors, but I do think we as audience should start holding Hollywood accountable when it disrespects our culture, heritage, environment, especially when it's movies that are this big and have a huge budged that would allow for more conscious choices.
Please do add anything else I missed.
Some very good and reasonable points, but for as much as I recognize the Iliad and Odyssey as extremely important works of literature for Greece I think it not having an all Greek cast is forgivable. No Greek actors, not even one? Yeah, that shows they probably didn’t care about including any in the first place. Is that a serious problem? Probably in the same League as giving the characters pants and filming in Iceland.
Still, if they were filming Beowulf and the cast was a bunch of Australians? I think the nords could survive such a wound.
So unless Greece is really starved for a win right now, which it very could be since my only reference for Modern Greece is 20th century civil wars and an apparently plummeting GDP, I think a swing and a miss for the Greeks on Nolan’s behalf is just going to have to be a bummer.
I don’t want to be a dick and tell Greek people their awesome folklore isn’t theirs to tell, but up against one of the biggest names in filming ignoring modern colonialism on multiple fronts and committing large scale pollution I think we can forgive a Shakespeare adaptation that isn’t an all English cast.
This isn't really about the specific take I'm reblogging (offensive as it is), but I'm morbidly fascinated by how virtually every conversation about how there are zero Greek people in the cast—even counting the five million-odd members of the Greek diaspora that a number of very bankable US actors belong to as "Greek people", which the very careful, mildly-worded Guardian article linked does—seems to get conflated with the cast not being entirely Greek as if these are the same argument.
Yes, there are racists making a big deal about how the characters and text are Greek, but a) they don't want an all-Greek cast either, they want an all-white cast, they're fine with all-Anglo representations of Greek people, and b) the complaint isn't about what the entire cast should be anyway. Nolan et al. didn't have to choose between Lupita Nyong'o and Any Greek People At All. That's a pure derailing tactic to trivialize the actual criticism and conflate it with something much easier to dismiss.
It's about the defense that it's representing the entire modern world while managing to exclude Greek people from their image of the modern world in a specifically Greek context— something that goes way, way back, because the ongoing existence of actual living Greek people rather than a long-lost fallen civilization whose works and artifacts are a common property of the world has frequently been deeply inconvenient to broad Western narratives and politics around it.
It's not unrelated to the other incredibly egregious instances of careless US-centric imperialism the OP was correctly highlighting, it's another form of it.
#yeah there's a reason that ancient greek mythology hobbyists are usually ignorant about anything to do w/ greek people for centuries#millennia if we're being real#and talk about 'the greeks believed' 'the greeks had a term' 'greeks had a culture' pretty much exclusively as a long-concluded past#as if 10 million people in greece and the 5 million of us in the diaspora never existed & the romans genocided us all.#i just think: sometimes if you listen very hard under a full moon... you can pretend you worship artemis and almost hear our voices...#fun fact: 'well really at this point greek culture belongs to the WORLD' is one of the arguments the british museum has given#for refusing repatriation :)#like 'we are also part of the world esp when it involves greek things!' = 'the rest of the world shouldn't get to be involved w/ it'#are not the same position at all but it's really convenient for a lot of people to dissolve them into one and the same (via @anghraine)
When you see a Prep in hottopic
“This Prep is ready for war bring it you emo fuck”
why are people reblogging this again
this post is like 11 years old
WHY AREYALL DOING THIS
We’re all having a midlife crisis leave us be
hey
fuck you LOL
We need weight loss ads now more than ever. Trump has reinvigorated the Fat Liberation group. The obesity epidemic is at its highest point ever. We need weight loss ads now more than ever.
Lol was this you
Seriously bruh, if you wanna make a case about nutritional defecits and the declining vitamin and mineral content in agricultural produce, the overall failure of public school physical education to provide any productive and meaningful instruction on personal health and correct methods of exercise, the ever-increasing cost of healthy foods, and the frankly shameful rate of child hunger and food waste all collectively contributing to poorer health in persons of ALL body types, I'm happy to play ball, but if the beginning and end of your platform is "there are more fat people than there used to be and being fat is bad so promoting eating disorders and drug abuse is good actually" then you are straight up wasting everyone's time
"Uhhh but everyone was skinny in 1920 look at this "fat lady" who was in a freak show at the circus lol and look how average she would be now" do you have any idea how many vitamins and other supplements we have had to insert into the food and water supply to combat widespread malnutrition in the last several decades
You realize how many people had teeth rotting out of their heads before we put fluoride in drinking water
Jesus fucking christ, google "B12 defecit"
The population was skinnier because we were constantly on the precipice of dying from shit like low zinc, you absolute dingbat
People being 'fatter' than we used to be is a GOOD thing, combating genuine weight-related health issues with a constant barrage of image-critical ads and the promotion of eating disorders in scientifically proven to be harmful and ineffective bullshit, and the fact that thinness as a beauty standard has been pushed to such extremes as intentionally infecting oneself with viruses and parasites amd chemically and surgically-enforced starvation over the past several hundred years only proves that this is not a natural default but a heavily-reinforced and artificial standard
Ozempic scares the shit out of me. You're telling me there's a drug that takes away both the craving side of hunger and targets the brain's rewards center for eating. You're telling me it takes the joy out of eating and it turns you into a skeleton. Why did we turn The Curse of the Black Pearl into a drug. What the fuck.
I actually want to thank the diabetics coming on this post like "actually it genuinely is a great treatment for diabetes and it hasn't affected my mood or my enjoyment of food. The real issue is it's getting abused as a weight loss drug which also makes it scarce and more expensive for those who can genuinely benefit from it." Kind of reminds me of the time my brother got permission from our family psychiatrist to try my ADHD medication and his reaction to it was "what the fuck are you on. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU ON. WHY DO I FEEL LIKE CRYING. YOU'RE ON THIS EVERY DAY!?!"
Body chemistry! It makes a big difference in how your body processes a drug! What can be genuinely helpful for some folks is The Curse of the Black Pearl for others!
such insolence... guards? seize her! ...no. stop. not like that. you are doing it gay. why are you seizing her gay style
was at the public pool yesterday and i kept looking around at all the women with fat and rolls and stretch marks and discolouration and cellulite and scars and thighs that bounce and bellies that jiggle and it's like wow. literally Everyone has these features that society is trying to convince us are evil and unnatural. idk it just really put things into perspective for me. highly recommend checking out your local public pool
we breached fucking containment
wtf is happening on twitter
Autistic spaces are getting so much more hostile towards people with low empathy, and it sucks
There was a subreddit I really liked, people were chill, and then there was a sudden influx of people making posts like ‘Autistic people have empathy! Saying we don’t makes us seem like monsters! Thats not a symptom!’ And people making posts explaining that no, actually, some of us do have low empathy got attacked and told they were wrong or ableist? And it sucks, because its just so hard to find a place to exist where you can be seen as not evil? I don’t know, it just hurts a lot to be told that
Being an adult will have you unironically craving a vegetable
Being an adult will have you unironically sad about a parasite outbreak in fresh vegetables.
My first piece of advice on the subject is that regardless of what anatomical situation you are dealing with, there is no actual credible, reliable way to physically or medically determine whether or not someone has had sex before. There is no indicator either way, in any physical sense, that would be reliably found in people who have had sex before and be reliably absent on people who haven't, and vice versa. If you find yourself in a situation where someone thinks they need to know whether or not you are a virgin, you can literally just lie. You can just say you're whatever option gets you the outcome you'd rather have.
My second piece of advice on the subject is to do whatever you can to avoid ending up in places where anyone thinks they need to know whether or not you're a virgin. And if you find yourself in one, you should do whatever you can to get out of there.
