“bits to use in everyday conversations”
Animorphs really has a way to turn every scifi trope on its head. "Why do alien invasions always start in America?" Actually the body snatchers first landed in a Middle Eastern farming community where they kidnapped the first guy they saw, read his mind, and concluded that, since he was terrified of the US soldiers who had brutally destroyed everything he knew and loved, the US would be the ideal place to center their invasion. This is revealed in the spin-off "Visser" which is an excellent stand-alone book that can be read without any prior knowledge of Animorphs. And you can read it for free and with the author's blessing right here:
https://files.animorphsfanforum.com/ebooks/pdf/Visser.pdf
The reviews are in!
So I found the letter that the Animorphs author and trans ally K. A. Applegate wrote after the series ended and I’m FLOORED
I mean
You want something even crazier? Animorphs ended in May 2001. She didn’t know what was coming, but damn if she didn’t give her readers a much needed dose of reality about the horrors of war right before we were really going to need it.
If you enjoy easily-digestible sci fi, and can get your hands on the animorphs books, I really recommend it. They’re fucking great and thoughtful in a lot of ways you might not have picked up on as a kid. I’ve read the first dozen or so books over the last couple of years and they’ve literally changed the way I look at the world.
Not to butt in since the series came along when I was in high school and thus a bit after my time, but I am a librarian and as such I am ALL ABOUT matching people to the books they need in whatever format is available.. You can download the entire series. It’s free.
Applegate’s statement on the piracy subject is quoted from an AMA here for those that have moral issues with it. for those that don’t want to click, she says: “We do not take them down. Or ask for them to be taken down. I think once the books are available to buy—paper or e—it would be nice if people who could afford it would buy. (our kids have very expensive tastes. You know: food and whatnot.) But for years they’ve been unavailable except by ‘pirated’ means. These men and women kept the series alive. They kept the books available. So no, we did NOT take these books down.”
Go forth, and read.
Would people be interested in a reading list of classic ancient world literature for beginners I'm kinda in the mood to infodump
I'm gonna do it anyways give me a bit to find links to where you can read online. Also fair warning this list is probably gonna be heavily skewed towards the Mediterranean, India, and China because those are the ones I know the most about.
I have linked to a free version of each of these texts if I could find them. Keep in mind though that if a translation is free it's usually old enough to have lost its copyright and is therefore pretty out of date and harder to read. If you want a smoother reading experience of any of these texts I'd suggest googling the most recent English translation and buying a copy of that.
This is not a comprehensive list by any means. To me it's just stuff that's good to be familiar with because it's still having a large impact on culture today. If you have any other recommendations please add them.
Ancient Babylon:
The poetry of Enheduanna, the earliest credited author we have records of. She was a priestess of the goddess Inanna and her poetry is hymns to the goddess in question as well as functionally political propaganda for her father who was king of the region at the time.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, the earliest written epic poem we have on record. It tells the story of a demigod king losing his best friend and going on a quest to try and achieve immortality to avoid the same fate.
Ancient Greece:
The Iliad by Homer tells the story of how the hero Achilles led to the end of the Trojan war. It notoriously has entire chapters composed entirely of lists but other than that it's good I promise.
The Odyssey by Homer tells the story of the ten year journey home of the hero Odysseus after the Trojan war. This is a text claimed by many to be just as important as the bible in terms of its impact on western literature.
The poetry of Sappho of Lesbos, called by many to be "the tenth muse". Her poetry is unusual for the time because she speaks about herself as the subject of her poetry. She's often considered to be important today because of her poetry about openly lusting for other women. Although she was very popular in her time, very few of her poems survive because the dialect she wrote in fell out of fashion.
Antigone, Oedipus the King, and Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles, also known as the three Theben Plays. Together, these plays tell the tragedy of the Greek hero Oedipus and the aftermath of his death on his children.
Ancient Rome:
The Aeneid by Virgil continues the story of Troy from where the Greek epics carry off from the Trojan perspective, following Rome's founding hero hero Aeneas and his journey to Italy.
Metamorphosis by Ovid is a poetic collection of short stories from Roman mythology with an anti-authoritarian bend. Ovid retells Greek myths from a Roman perspective, and from the perspective of a man who hates authority living in a time where a republic is being replaced by a monarchy.
Ancient China:
The Poetry of Li Bai. A controversial man in his own time in the Tang dynasty who was kicked out of many courts and was married four times. His poetry has a lot of beautiful imagery in it that modern poets from all over the world still take inspiration from.
The poetry of Du Fu, also known as Tu Fu, is another great poet of the Tang dynasty. His poetry is more personal than that of Li Bai, who was his contemporary, and he is sometimes also considered an early historian.
The Analects of Confucius is a series of sayings and lecture notes gathered by the students of the philosopher Confucius. The philosophy in these works still has an impact on cultural values in many Asian countries to this day.
Ancient India:
The Vedas are a series of texts sacred to Hinduism. Although important, they are so long that I can't in good conscience tell you to read the whole thing. So here is a small selection of quotes from the university of Hawaii's intro to Asian philosophy course and I invite you to do your own research after that.
Shakuntala by Kalidasa is a play that tells the story of a woman who is cursed to be forgotten by her husband for a small slight she committed. Kalidasa is extremely pro-monarchy but he wants monarchs to be good, so this play serves as a moral example for the upper classes.
Hala's Sattasai is an ancient Indian collection of various love poems. Only recently translated into English. And I am personally very glad for that because they are lovely.
I think that these are a good place to get you started if you want to actually read this stuff instead of just reading summaries. There's an endless well of fragments and other texts you can jump into if you like, but these are, in my opinion, the basics. I hope you find something here that you like.
Here it is. The other reblog doesn't show up in the notes because of all the links.
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)

One of the many stupid feelings humans are capable of having is the private, repulsive rage of seeing someone getting support and sympathy for a problem no one helped you with when you were having it, either because you didn’t have anyone or because it never occurred to you that you could ask for help. Suddenly the world seems to split into two – the realm that contains people like them, the connected and loved – and the realm that contains you, the miserable and the alone, who must suffer in solitude. This is sufficiently horrible that you grasp for reasons or world-understandings to make this reality acceptable, and a mentally available one is that it is superior to be in the miserable solitude realm, that the problem is one that should be solved with self sufficiency and dignity. That this other person is pathetic for being aided and loved when you were not. Scorn is more palatable than confronting the notion that you could have received aid (if you had made different choices or been luckier), that you desperately wish you could have been aided but were not. Scorn is more palatable than the howling hunger for things to have been different for you. So your mind chooses scorn.
It is also a bad place to be. Human existence is full of such traps.

Me asking someone to be my girlfriend just so I can have sex with her because CASUAL SEX CAUSES SOCIETAL PROBLEMS
You might not want to hear this but people with anger issues and/or violent impulses need social accommodations. And no by accommodation I don't mean walking on eggshells around them, actual accommodations for people with these issues comes down to giving them a space away from what's triggering them to process their emotions and calm themselves down same as what kind of accommodations people who get sensory overload or just any kind of overwhelmed. There is no moral value to having anger issues or violent impulses, people with them are deserving of accommodation the same as everyone else.
I had severe anger issues growing up, and the only way I was ever taught to deal with them was deep breathing. For some reason, deep breathing just triggers me to get angrier. But it's the only coping skill I ever got taught for it. Here's a few better ones.
Go and exercise. Get all of that energy out and away from the people you love.
Get a hang of when you're winding up to a rage and learn to tell people that you need to step away. I will warn you that the first time that someone refuses to let you go once you learn this skill will spook the hell out of you if you don't have a backup skill, so figure out ahead of time what you're gonna do if they won't let you leave.
Learn to set boundaries. One of the best things I ever did for my anger issues was tell people that I can't deal with people stealing food off my plate. Second best was when I'm mad, telling people not to touch me. I spook easily when I'm already angry.
Get a pack of pencils and if nothing is working, break one. Sometimes you really do need to break something in order to feel better, and pencils are cheap.
Don't cook with a knife when you're mad. If you get too much adrenaline, the knife can slip and hurt you.
If you have anger issues that pop up without any seeming reason and frighten you, I would strongly recommend going over the situation and over your mental health. If there's anything consistent with a mental health condition or with something particular happening to trigger it, seek to eliminate the trigger or treat the issue. Depression, anxiety, trauma, you name it, it can probably present as anger issues under the right circumstances.
Some quick notes for people without anger issues that want to help someone who has anger issues:
Fear transmutes into anger really, really well if someone's fear response is "fight". One of my guesses for why so many men have anger issues is that we're told we're not men if we have any other response to fear. However, this issue is far from exclusive to men.
Don't box people in when you're arguing with them or soothing them. If someone is backed up against a wall and upset, then getting closer to them without permission is a bad call for your safety and for their soothing, because that removes the ability to get away from you. Ask before getting close. This goes double if someone is injured or otherwise vulnerable.
Teaching angry people that are distressed about being angry the pencil trick on the spot is really easy and works more often than you can think.
Respect people's requests and boundaries. A lot of people think that some of the boundaries I set up are silly or that once we're pals, they can ignore them. No, because a lot of my boundaries are related to trauma, and crossing them will trigger me and bring up my anger.
All of this goes for children with anger issues as well. I was a child with anger issues, and a lot of disrespect for my boundaries and needs was because my anger was dismissed because I was a child. Respect children's anger.
Walking on eggshells is not and will never be a good way to treat anger issues. Recognizing that people with anger issues deserve to have their boundaries respected and to be treated like human beings is.
An end note: Anger issues are not the same thing as being abusive, because emotions are not abusive. Someone with anger issues can become abusive if they take them out on people, but so can someone with suicidal thoughts who takes them out on people. The issue is targeting another person in order to feel better, not having a mental health issue.
An end note for people with anger issues: It really can get better. You can find coping skills and perhaps meds that help cool you down and settle you. You can find people that will accept that doing that one weird thing spooks the fuck out of you, and will let you leave if you're scaring yourself. You can gain control of yourself without shutting down emotionally. It's achievable.
"Trans people can't take a joke"
so true tho, all of a sudden alllllll these guys care about the integrity of women's sports...
not just sports but the whole women´s rights debacle.... you got these dudes who never gave a flying fuck about feminism or dismissed rape culture or any other legitimate issues but suddenly they´re all concerned about trans women in the women´s bathrooms? or about this? "Back in my day, they just let tomboys be tomboys exist instead of convincing them to be trans....." And i´m like: " Bitch, were were you when some of us got bullied for merely be gender non conforming in our teens in the good old days? "
makes me CRAZY how well atla illustrates all the different ways countries can be affected by colonization and imperialism…the air nomads wiped out in a relatively brief military campaign. the southern water tribe slowly worn down and violated over the course of decades. the northern water tribe completely isolating and turning to strict tradition in the face of a horrifying enemy. the decentralized earth kingdom being affected in varying ways, with some areas completely untouched but terrified that they’ll be next, some areas in an uneasy peace with the fire nation in exchange for economic domination, and some areas completely taken over. and just the ways that these kind of interplay…like the trauma katara and sokka have as people who live relatively safe from invasion, but with the threat of another raid always on the horizon, terrified that the next one will wipe them out for good, is completely different from the trauma aang has, as someone who lost everything and didnt witness the brutality, only its aftermath, and that’s completely different from the trauma that suki has, with kyoshi out of the war but constantly training in preparation for an invasion, and thats completely different from the trauma haru has, as an earthbender in an actively occupied village. and theres so much more too like theres all these complex and nuanced situations and none are objectively better or worse than the other but it shows exactly how many tools imperialism uses to demoralize and defeat those its directed against
It also shows tha trauma war has done to the imperialists. Their homeland is polluted from the industrialization that’s allowed them 100 years of war. Their people have lost the nuances of their culture, everything “traditional” is actually a hundred years old or less. The people have forgotten how to dance, and the economy revolves around war and colonialism. The government and ruling class is corrupt and oppressive.

If your apology involves degrading yourself, calling yourself shit or insulting yourself, its not an apology, try again.
Can someone translate this?
Don’t try to guilt people by saying “I’m sorry I fucking suck.” “I’m sorry I’m just the worst and I should die” Because thats not an apology, thats trying to guilt the other person into dropping the subject.
Yup. That’s called Weaponized Remorse. Basically, you’re avoiding accountability by blowing up a big Feelings Bomb at the person you hurt and going “let’s not focus on what I did or what I should do to make amends, let’s focus on how awful I feel about it all, and how you should make me feel better.”
White Woman Crying Syndrome.
Some of the people doing it are just selfish and insensitive assholes.
Some of the people doing it are selfish and insensitive assholes who are specifically trying to train you to think that trying to tell them what they’re doing wrong is going to involve a Drama Bomb and not resolve anything, so you just shouldn’t bother.
“But I DO feel hurt and upset by the situation I’m apologizing for”
Sure, but the person you’re apologizing to doesn’t want or need to hear about it. Go tell a friend who wasn’t involved. Go tell a therapist. Your spouse. DON’T add it to your apology.
So here’s a thing: sometimes people do this not because they’re trying to weaponize anything, but because they were (intentionally or otherwise) taught that they had to preemptively abase themselves as part of every apology or it wouldn’t be accepted.
And it’s still not a good apology, because the purpose of it is not “I understand what I did wrong and I regret it” but “I’m terrified of your disapproval and I will say anything to make it stop.”
So please don’t think you can’t fall into this category if you aren’t consciously doing it to guilt people. You might not be thinking “how can I make this about how hurt I am instead of what I did to you?”, you might be thinking something a lot more like “how can I show my complete surrender so you can win and the fight can be over?”, but that still isn’t an apology. It may not be your fault that you were taught that that’s how to apologize; you still need to learn better.
(And for the record: if you’re with anybody who believes that self-abasement is how you should apologize, and insists on that from you whenever they say you’re in the wrong, that’s a situation you should do your best to get out of.)
I grew up in a household where this was very much the definition of “apology”: the unspoken understanding was that once mom had decided you’d screwed up, then somebody was going to abase and abuse you, and it was much easier – and faster– if you did it to yourself than if you let her do it.
So yeah, I totally understand how one arrives at this habit, and I totally understand how it can feel very very wrong to not to do this. When performing self-hatred is the only thing that keeps you safe, then your brain learns to freak right the fuck out when you fail to do it.
The problem is, you learn this habit when you spend time with someone who doesn’t give a shit about you (or your needs, or your feelings, or your pain). Often, you learn it from someone who actively wants to hurt you. But the rest of the world isn’t like that. Once you get out of that situation (and yeah, let me emphatically second the movement to get out of that situation as quickly as you are safely able to do so), you are surrounded by people who do give a shit, and who very much do not want to hurt you. Friends and partners, especially, but (and this is one of those things that’s hard to swallow), even random people at the bus stop care, at least somewhat, about helping and comforting complete strangers. Humans are pack animals, and distressing other people causes us distress.
So when I say, “Yeah, yeah, I’m worthless garbage, I get it,” that makes the alarm bells in my brain shut off, (which, God, do I need ways to make the alarm bells in my brain shut off) … and it also feels accurate (you can only perform self-hatred for so long before it sinks in)…. but it’s a completely different experience to the sane, reasonable, decent person who hears it. To them, it sounds like they, personally, individually, have completely obliterated my self-esteem, and that makes them, in turn, feel awful about themself. Because no reasonable decent person wants you to feel like garbage.
So yeah, as much better as the degrading-myself feels to me, I’m not smoothing over the issue; I’m exacerbating it. I’m giving them a no-win situation, in which they either have to feel terrible about themself for hurting me, or they have to never bring up anything that bothers them, ever, in any way.
And it doesn’t matter that I was trying to smooth things over, nor that I didn’t want to make them feel awful. The fact of the matter is that I did make them feel awful, and I did put them in a no-win situation. And that’s not who I want to be.
What’s the alternative? I would love to have some feedback from people who are better at this, and had better training, than I. But my template is something like
Hey, {person}. I’m sorry about {Thing I Did}. I {brief explanation of why I Did The Thing}, but {reason why the Thing I Did was bad, actually}.

To a partner
Hey, love. I’m sorry I snapped at you. I was feeling overwhelmed, but it wasn’t fair to take it out on you like that. When we both have spoons, I’d like to brainstorm ways I can let you know when I’m over-stimulated, so I can catch this spiral before I lose control. I love you, and I’m sorry. Raina
To a friend
Hey. I’m sorry for teasing you about your book, the other night. I was just trying to play around, but it’s not playing if it’s hurting someone. I should have paid more attention to what you were saying.
I wanted to let you know that I really do think your idea is awesome, and I hope you do write it. Is there anything I can do to help that happen?
If you’d be comfortable, I would like to hear more about what you’re OK with joking about, and what you’d like me to stay away from, so I can do a better job in the future. But either way, I’ll try to be more cognizant of what I’m saying and how it affects people.
Sorry again, Raina
To a coworker
Hey, Alan. I wanted to apologize for my attitude in the meeting the other day. I was feeling super-defensive, and it made me react badly, and without even really listening to your proposal. I should have handled that better.
Looking over your suggestions again, I still have concerns about x, y, and z, but I really like what your idea could do for a, b, and c. I’m wondering about maybe, instead of making a change to this report, if we should just make a whole new one? That would let us get a and b, but not affect y and z.
It’s also possible I’m misunderstanding the impact on x and y, so if so, feel free to tell me what I’m missing. If you think that would be easier in a call or a meeting than in an email, feel free to throw something on my calendar.
Again, I’m sorry about my initial reaction. In the future, I’ll be better about making sure to understand the full proposal before I respond.
Thanks,
Raina
Or even (going meta)
Hey –
I wanted to apologize for how I handled our conversation when you pointed out my misgendering Tanya. I was raised to apologize in this really self-abasing manner, and that’s what feels like the most sincere type of apology to me, but looking back on how it went, I’m guessing that made you really uncomfortable.
I reached out to apologize to Tanya, but I wanted to say thank you for holding your ground when I lashed out, and thank you for caring about me and trusting me enough to correct me in the first place.
I’m working on changing my habits when I’m called out, but I’ve still got a ways to go. If you want to talk about it more, I’m in a better place now to have a conversation. Otherwise, I’ll just keep working to get better.
Thanks again,
Raina
Hi neil!
I got into the sandman comics about a year ago, and then subsequently the show (which is just fantabulous), and after telling my uncle about it he sent me the Death volume (she’s been his favorite character for decades). at the end of the volume there was a comic where Death teaches the reader about AIDs and safe sex.
I was wondering what it was like to originally publish that comic, when (i’m assuming, i wasn’t born yet) they were such touchy subjects?
A friend of mine, Don Melia, had just died of AIDS. Before he died we talked and he urged me to do something to help. Martha Thomases at DC Comics and Alisa Kwitney then assistant editor on Sandman put us in touch with the right people, and got what I wrote fact-checked carefully by an AIDS organisation, and found the helpline and information that we put on the back of the original 8 page supplement (to comics) and handout (sent free to comic shops). A lot of comic shops got them to libraries, high schools, or gave them out to customers. It didn't seem like governments were telling people how to keep safe. We could and we did. I'm still grateful to DC Comics for making it happen, and to all the comics retailers who gave them out or distributed them to people who needed them.
Just wanted to say thanks again, because reading that comic, and having my dad hand me that issue, in a way that framed sex education as normal and in parts funny, made it much easier to talk about sex and sexual health together.
Having that as a third-party we could talk (what Death says or what Neil Gaiman says) made the conversation less embarrassing, especially since you’re the exact same age as my dad. So yeah, thanks Neil.
I'm so glad. That was what it was for.
I grew up during the worst of the AIDS epidemic and before an elder could explain what I needed to know, they were dying of this disease.
There are plenty of other reasons that this lesson is still important.
My thanks, Neil. I am here in small part because of this sound advice.
