i remember reading a book as a kid and the author continually italicizing the word tamales

Dr. Trinity Santos THE PITT 2.05
"Why do you buy books when the library is right there?"
Because publishing houses will not continue printing paper books if libraries are their only customers.
Also, I like being able to read at my leisure and generally have books at hand.
#public libraries are good because they let people access books they might never otherwise read#private book ownership is good because it's Yours#physical books are good because they last a long time and again it's Yours#ebooks are good because you can fit a whole library into the physical space of a single book and they're cheaper to produce#audiobooks are good because they're accessible to people with eyesight or visual reading issues and leave your hands free#in conclusion: all books are good and people should enjoy them however and whenever they can#(lest it be misunderstood I agree with you completely OP I just also really like books in general and it got away from me)
YES. all books. every kind
I will occasionally see people bashing The Evils of Consumerism re:books - I have seen people saying things like "Well, I know is a bad habit of buying new books-".
Profit margins in publishing are really thin. Even if I'm not reading it RIGHT NOW, I do want the publisher to keep publishing the series!
Libraries are great, but if you have the money to buy books it is also great to support the authors you like!
Sales determine what they publish in the future. If nobody buys it, they're not going to make more of them.

This. Folks, if I get a royalty that’s over $20 a month, I’m tickled pink. Some months I don’t get any. For two books. Authors CANNOT LIVE on royalties, or advances (I never got an advance). One could have MULTIPLE books still in print yet still make well under minimum wage a month. Most authors work at least part time. And many work full time. Not always by choice. And that’s the ones who sold something *and* their books are still selling. Many books fade after a year, and certainly after 5.
In short, please buy books. You are not supporting The Man. You’re supporting an author who makes peanuts per book. Also, please review books, even if you borrowed it from the library. It’s a great way of “feeding” your author even if you couldn’t afford the book. (Positive) reviews help authors keep selling.
I haven't actually counted up how much I made from my duology, but I would not be surprised if it was under $1000 in 8 years. Granted, it was a very small publisher and the books didn't get picked up in a big way, but still: it's miniscule money, all told. It's INCREDIBLY hard to make money off a book unless it's a NYT bestseller and the publisher is pushing it bigtime - and maybe, not even then! I don't know! So please keep buying books if you can, both because it will give a boost to the author and because publishers need to sell books to continue publishing. Books! Are great! It's okay to spend money on books!

one last poem for Richard by Sandra Cisneros
the thing is, im always interested in The Paperwork. whenever The Characters moan and groan about The Paperwork and whenever it's left unspecified what The Paperwork entails i go aw... The Paperwork... u dont deserve this attitude, The Paperwork... im sure you're very interesting and important... this is because i like my job at The Paperwork factory and because i like homework and it's also because The Characters often hold positions of power attained through superhuman abilities and enforced with violence and i know that The Paperwork is there, aspirationally, to document their actions and protect people. from institutional neglect and from The Characters. when The Characters ignore The Paperwork to fuck each other on The Desk i think less of them for it. i do.
i made this post offhandedly, but resentment/dismissal of The Paperwork is a trope from procedural fiction and commercial sff that is really really common in fanworks bc it makes for an easy shorthand when u don't want to research or invent the details of a job, and i do seriously want to ask everyone to get skeptical of it. it's part of a broader narrative type of the ultra-talented Maverick, usually law enforcement or pseudo law enforcement (e.g. a monster hunter, a status-quo-enforcing time traveler, a man in black, a moral mercenary, etc.), whose ability to police the boundaries of Civilization ("normal," defined by hegemony, Flawed But Worth Preserving!) and protect a homogenous Public (white, heteronormative, bourgeois, documented, "law-abiding," "innocent," helpless!!) is limited not by his energy or ability, but by forces (small-minded, foolish, persnickety, overcautious, sexless, dull, effeminate!!!) of Overhead, from whence comes... The Paperwork.
The Paperwork might be generated by administrators, journalists, lawyers, judges, civilian oversight committees, the village elders or the intergalactic legislature, depending on the story. and who benefits from us telling each other stories that belittle & villainize those professions while lionizing The Maverick? "if only The Maverick were given unlimited resources, unlimited access, unlimited privacy in his operations, and unlimited use of excessive force, he would be able to protect The Public (and find love! maybe on The Desk)." you see it, right? this is how copaganda will get in your head.
no these are great tags! thank you!
it’s called a what?!

I'm sorry but I refuse to leave this in the tags.
Tolkien did know this, he left specific instructions on how to translate his works and what to keep. Which is why Bilbo Baggins from Bag End became Bilbon Sacquet de Cul-de-Sac
BILBO FROM THE ASS END OF HOBBITSVILLE
Everyone calls it a noob class and true the increased damage to all targets + the stealth bonus makes Bisexual a good soloing option, and while a lot of people change classes from it later, the flexible roles and spec options (Grungler is some of the most fun you'll have playing Support Tank) make it a great class even at later levels, if you're willing to get through the confusing early game

I have never read a more excellent article
This is a great take and I would like to adopt “Feelings Yakuza” in English actually, I feel like it conveys the whole thing way more obviously than “anti” (not to mention the muddled meaning of “proshipper”).
To avoid harassment, EA and SEA artists have started pre-emptively blocking users with "proship DNI" or any variation thereof in their profiles as a result of this article and said feelings yakuza are getting pissed that their DNIs are being hard enforced by the other side. How very dare.
I’m screaming with laughter at the actual Japanese term, o-kimochi yakuza. The “o” is an honorific indicator to indicate how prissy and self-important these people are being.
I don't know if Maromi intended this to be the incredible takedown that it is, but I couldn't not share it:
Why does everyone think fiction is just fantasy wish fulfillment now and not like an exploration of themes and ideas
People will be like “this movie is evil and gross because it depicts a predatory relationship” and then you watch the movie in question and it’s about how preying on young women is bad and impacts their lives negatively
“Why would they do this instead of just making everyone in the movie nice and normal and good” so we would have this conversation….
do you ever read goodreads reviews and realize that there are people out there approaching fiction is a diametrically different way than you
you could not pay me to read a book whose fans describe it like this
One of my favorite Tumblr-isms is having a set of mutuals who are so so deep into something that I am unfamiliar with that their tags have grown so niche and specific as to be useless in identifying the thing they're into. Like I love this for you, mutuals. I do not know whose ass that is or what the context is for the jokes in the tags but I'm happy for you.
