@a-peculiar-being
listen i'm not advocating for exotic animals as pets, but i really just feel like cheetahs are probably different
i feel like we need to give them another shot as housebeasts
this is a critter who wants greenies and then to take a nap on the couch next to me, and i KNOW it
cheetah in House perfec t size for put inside! inside very Soft and Comfort cheetah sleep soundly put cheetah in House. Put Cheetah In House. no problems ever in cheetah in ho use because good Happy and Satisfy for human where sleep. House yes a place for a cheetah put cheetah in house can trust cheetah for giveing good love to humans in house. friend cheetah
I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.
congrats, i award you funniest take on this post
My own son??? Happy to see ME??? For real?!?
The Cat with Julie Manet, 1887, by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
What a great 1890 Queen Anne Victorian, for the price, in Little Falls, NY. 6bds, 3ba, 5,318sqft, Reduced $11k to $399k.
“It's not fair.” The little ghost kicks impotently at the chalk lines around her feet. “I ain't done nothing.”
I nod, setting down my chalk and spellbook. “It does sound like there might have been a bit of a misunderstanding.”
“She took against me, that's what happened,” the dead girl says with a scowl. She looks about fourteen, round faced and spotty, with whisps of brown hair peaking out from under her mob-cap. Her face and her crossed arms have a tell-tale bluish tinge to them. A cholera death.
“I been here for don't know how long and never gave any trouble. Nobody ever complained about me 'till her.”
…well, that's not strictly true.
Number 12, Barclay Street has been attracting rumours of haunting since the mid nineteenth century.
Sounds of faint singing and crying in the corridors at night. Cold spots. Doors that open and close by themselves. Animals acting strangely. Harmless, mid to low-level stuff, typical for a bored teenage poltergeist.
Still, pointing that out isn't likely to achieve much, and certainly the most recent complaints of blood running down the walls, screams in the dark and paralysing night terrors seem distinctly out of character.
The ghost toes the chalk again, more tentatively this time. It stays resolutely unbroken.
She could get out if she wanted to. I'm not one of those assholes who brings out their full arsenal of wards and sigils for a first meeting with a level 2 spectre. The summoning circle will keep her in one place for as long as I need her to talk, but it wouldn't hold for a moment if she really fought against it.
I take it as a good sign that she's still here. Pouting or not, she's clearly willing to work with me.
“None of the others could do this,” she says. “None of 'em even saw me.” She looks up. “Are you here to exise me?”
“Exorcise,” I say instinctively, and curse myself when she flinches. “Sorry, no, no! I don't exorcise people from their homes without good reason, not if they're happy where they are.”
“I was happy. Till she started calling in all them ghost hunters.”
Mrs Delaney had been quite persistent in her attempts to 'fix' her haunted house. Most of the people she found were charlatans, of course, but I'd still arranged an appointment as fast as I could once word reached me. It wouldn't have been long before she happened upon somebody with Talent, and unfortunately not everybody in this field knows how to behave like a professional.
“I think we might be able to help each other,” I say, careful to keep my voice calm and level.
“Don't see how. Not unless you can exorcise Her.”
“Not quite what I had in mind.” I pull out my phone and scroll through my photos. “You say that you're not the cause of the most recent incidents of paranormal activity?”
A pause. The ghost gnaws on her lip. I wait, patiently, keeping my body language open and nonthreatening. “I… I knocked her coffee cup over,” she admits at last. “She was being mean and talking on her telephone, saying I done all these things when I never did! So I decided to show her what I could do if I wanted.”
“Hmm.” The ghost eyes me nervously, as if expecting me to pull out a book, bell and candle and banish her on the spot.
“I only tipped it,” she adds. “I didn't break it or nothing!”
“You shouldn't have touched it at all,” I say sternly. “But… I can appreciate that you were frustrated, so let's say no more about it.”
The ghost looks relieved.
“My point is,” I continue, “if you weren't the one making blood rain from the ceiling or tormenting people in their sleep, then what was? There's no other ghosts on the property.” I find the picture I was looking for. “You can get anywhere around the house, right? Including behind the furniture and in the backs of cupboards?”
“Yes'm.”
I hold the phone up so that she can see the picture on the screen. “I'm going to let you go free in a moment, and I need you to see if you can find anything that looks like this.”
The ghost wrinkles her forehead. “What's that when it's at home?”
“Black mould,” I say, reaching out a foot to break the binding circle. “And I'm pretty sure it's the cause of this haunting.”
Sandbox Tree (aka Dynamite Tree)
The Sandbox Tree (Hura Crepitans) grows primarily in South America, the Amazon rain-forest and certain parts of North America.
This tree is completely dangerous. The pumpkin shaped fruit it grows causes (upon consumption) vomiting, diarrhea and cramps. The sap from the tree is toxic and was once used to poison the tips of darts for combat. It can also cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eye.
The really cool (and also dangerous) thing about this tree is how the fruits explode. When they’re ripe, the hardened seed capsules explode and send flat, hard seeds over a 60 feet radius at 150 MPH (~240 KPH).

I cannot describe how much I laughed at this.
Sound is VERY important.

Y'all ever think of what the person responsible for Rocky's voice bank must've felt when those videos finally got to earth? Imagine doing a voice acting gig for a bank voice on a computer or whatever that you eventually completely forget about, only for it to one day come back to you when the FIRST intellectual alien lifeform that a human being has ever met decides to use it as their chosen voice. The mild horror. The exhilaration. The emotional punch. This is it. This is your magnum opus. You have given a human voice to a sentient rock and it will NEVER get better than this. Also, they picked you over MERYL STREEP?!?!

How to see whether a Chinese handmade teapot is well done or not - quality of the spout is an important standard.

that last teapot is like witnessing an eternal and important truth
I just watched this with the sound on and i really recommend it because the utter silence of the last teapot is both perfectly predictable and totally remarkable.
How do you think the characters/series might be different if someone other than Cassie was an estreen?
My thoughts:
JAKE: Would get in touch with his more artistic side in his rare moment of downtime
RACHEL: Would always morph a bear arm first and foremost so that she couldn't immediately start punching enemies
MARCO: Would morph in such a way that always managed to "mysteriously" end up closer to Rachel (for ex when shrinking to a cockroach with Rachel on his left, most changes would happen in ways that made him lean/fall left, no one knows why, such a weird thing)
AX: Would unfortunately have one more "proof" in the superiority of Andalites over humans.
TOBIAS: Interesting question: is estreen-ness tied to mental focus or genetic luck? Would he still be an estreen once trapped in hawk form? Regardless, I do think it would have taken him a little longer to get trapped, because he his go-to when he got stressed would be to more hawk wings on his human form for a couple minutes and it would help calm him down, and he might feel less trapped overall.
What do you think?
I love all of these. And now I'm fascinated by the idea that Tobias just doesn't try that hard at morphing, and most of his apparent delay behind the others is just down to lack of motivation. Because it certainly fits.
He accidentally-on-purpose traps himself in morph. He hates seeing his friends go into danger and being unable to help, of course, but other than that he rarely morphs. He seems to have less interest in morphing for fun than the others — he does maybe three? quirky side quests (commercial crashing in #3, mouse infiltration in MM1, parrot sabotage in #15) and for all of those he's out of morph rather than acquiring new stuff for hijinks. So I love the idea that morphing skill is driven by motivation, with Cassie having the highest for clear character reasons and Tobias or Marco having the lowest overall.
Also, as far as the idea is, I think that there’s heavy implication that being an estreen is not a function of luck or some in a skill, but rather something that comes from having deeply internalized knowledge of biology (and possibly the ability to visualize it well). The two estreens in the series, Cassie and Estrid, have significant in-depth knowledge of biology in a way that few of the other characters do.
That's fascinating as well, because it suggests that anyone is capable of training their way into being an estreen. Which is a read that I really like.
I also feel like being an estreen is a skill or even just a thought process… Whenever Cassie describes morphing, she will talk about how she just focuses on each body part individually. Whereas when others describe how to morph they just think about the animal they want to morph. So when I read about how each character morphs, it seems like most just take morphing at face value.
Cassie was also able to talk Marco through demorphing when he starts to get trapped as a giant flea in The Threat, even though they were past the 2 hour mark, which I think shows that morphing isn’t as black and white as it seems on the surface/what the Animorphs are told.
@a-peculiar-being
#I think that if morphing were available to everybody#that a lot more people would experiment with it#and the world would learn a lot more about what is possible#but for the series it is used almost exclusively as a weapon#and it just isn’t worth the risk to the Animorphs to experiment#and it doesn’t seem like the andilites care enough about the possibilities for an estreen to try#it probably would be considered frivolous or unnecessary#Animorphs
Yes! I've seen some fics where post-war, morphing becomes standard medical treatment for any serious injury. Or where rich and powerful people regularly pay through the nose to morph slightly younger doppelgangers. And I agree that our understanding of the tech and its uses would mushroom if that many people had morphing.
Also makes me wonder what percent of andalites can morph. We know they're a heavily militarized society, and we know that (at least in Elfangor's adolescence) it's rarely given to non-soldiers. But Aldrea also gets morphing informally (illegally?), and it's common enough that Ax assumes Mertil must be allergic to morphing tech if he's still a vecol as an adult. So like, it could be anything from >99% to <20% of andalites that morph.
