In the times of great need many look to the ones that helped them smile
some find comfort in them, a lost contact, a faded memory, something that once was
to know they will give them what was needed, the only thing that was asked for
even if it was only temporary, even if the feeling will fade as fast as a shooting star
to know that someone else had the heart to share their time with you when you had none to spare
as you look at the runners, the ones that avoid anything that isn’t light
the ones that once stood to you, the ones that always could be counted on
to see they were waiting for the gunshot, the sound of the start
you were the pegs holding their feet in place, until you spoke your words
as the sounds flowed from your mouth, the thumping became louder
opening your eyes to see no one, turning to see no one, being in silence
not knowing what to do, not knowing who to look to, who to trust
a hand, a single hand comes out as you look up, you take it with a smile
you hug them and thank them, you thank them for the one thing you needed
the heart you needed, the time you needed, though temporary, you feel at peace
