Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty
Behold, Dorothea
(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)
Oh my goodness she is so lovely and full! And she's flowering!! That's a happy maranta indeed
āour teeth and ambitions are baredā is a zeugma
and itās a zeugma where one of the words is literal and one is metaphorical which is the BEST KIND
I didnāt know about zeugmas until just now! That isĀ so awesome, everybody:Ā
zeugĀ·ma ĖzoĶoÉ”mÉ/
noun
a figure of speech in which a word applies to two others in different senses (e.g.,John and his license expired last weekĀ ) or to two others of which it semantically suits only one (e.g.,Ā with weeping eyes and heartsĀ ).
ISNāT THAT AWESOME??
#in english class in high school my teacher had us write our own zeugmas in class#and one guy came up with āhe fell from her favor⦠and the windowā#i am forever looking for opportunities to use that one
She dropped her dress and inhibitions at the door.
Whatās this? My favorite rhetorical device showing up on my dashboard?
IT HAS A NAMEEEE!! OH MY GOD!!!
I LOVE THIIIIIS!!!
One Iāve loved was āon their weekend trip they caught three fish and a coldā
I love these theyāre like a pun and a metaphor wrapped up into one neat phrase
I get why the term āsubtextā originated on Xena forum boards because lol
To be fair - it wouldnāt be called āsubtextā now.
It would be called less explicit or less obvious.
Xena is very main text. Itās just quiet about it.
yeah thatās why I put with āthirty years of hindsightā in the tags of my post. Iām not judging a show from 1995 using the media environment of 2026.
but also the Xena web forums of the ā90s was literally the origin of the term āsubtextā. and definitionally it is subtext. weāre more used to calling out queer subtext now, but itās not explicit even by the standards of today. (Iām watching an episode as I type where Xena is making out with Hercules and Gabrielle kisses whatshisface and they call each other their best friends.)
conversations on those forums were some of the first conversations talking about non-explicit queer representation in media and what that meant for queerness on screen generally. it was kind of really important and groundbreaking.
Obligatory response to 'whatshisface'
As for the topic on hand, even when the subtext can be considered canon by the end I agree it's still subtext for the sheer fact that it is never said explicitly, no matter how obvious. (And I do love it exactly as it is.)
Unbelievable as it is, the subtext still managed to go above the heads of thousands of people watching the show. Which probably says more about the hetronormative of the 90s/00s than of the show.
poor Iolaus š

Spirit Animal is racist.
Patronus was invented by a transphobe.
I think itās time we all suck it up and say what we mean: fursona.
I know this is a jokey post (rip OPs notes) but a fursona is typically an animal REPRESENTATION of YOURSELF, not an external animal that is strongly meaningful to you and your life/journey.
I've seen daemon and familiar proposed, but to keep in line with the cursedness of the original post, may I suggest: spiritual tamagotchi
do you have any idea how refreshing it is to see a correction/suggestion to this post that actually understands the assignment

My elderly father started talking about how frustrating he finds āthe pronouns thingā and I was like. Oh no. He had such a good stand on this, heās been they/them-ing his cishet siblings for godās sake! Is he regressing?? And he was talking about how difficult it is to remember, and how onerous it feels to expect strangers to keep track of it, and Iām like oh no oh no.
Then he says, āI mean, the problem isnāt the gender thing. The problem is four words: she, her, he, and him. We got rid of stewardess and turned it into flight attendant. It doesnāt matter if the flight attendant is a man or woman, so we got rid of it. We just need to get rid of those. I donāt need to know.ā
āYou donāt need to know⦠peopleās gender?ā
āNo. I donāt care, I donāt need to know, and I donāt want to remember it.ā
So we can relax. Itās just a continuation of his crusade to they/them the world. He doesnāt want to remember anyoneās gender. Heās abolishing the genders.
Your dad is so powerful
