Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .

MONSTER HIGH FANCAST

so i usually overlook fancasts because most of the time, they're wildly inaccurate (not to mention, when it comes to black women they're usually colorist). but in light of the absolute travesty that is the monster high cast reveal, I figured i'd do my own fancast for the movie.

dara reneé as clawdeen wolf. do i really need to explain? the energy. the vibes. the hair. immaculate. dara's performance in hsmtmts tells me that she could kill it as the sapphic boss bitch herself.

malina weissman as draculaura. is it mainly because of the bangs? perhaps. but i feel like malina just has the energy to play draculaura. the lovelorn look in her eyes really sells it for me, too. although, i will admit that i'm not actually mad at the actual casting for her, either. i just think malina is an equally good fit.

ceci balagot as frankie stein. yes, he is the actual casting. but i'm in love with him, so i am biased. i also love the fandom wide headcanon that frankie is gender non conforming, which i feel like if they actually went down that road, would make ceci the perfect fit. either way, he kills it as frankie and is one of the only two casting choices i'm actually okay with.

yara shahidi as cleo de nile. okay okay, i know i may seem like a yara hate blog, but i am not. i actually love her, i just don't appreciate how the industry has used her image to participate in the erasure of dark skinned characters in fiction. but in this case, she would make the absolute perfect cleo and you cannot tell me otherwise. her diva-ish role as zoey in black-ish/grown-ish translates so well when you imagine her as cleo. plus, she's half middle eastern on her paternal side. while not exactly egyptian, i feel like that goes much farther than what they have now.

miah madden as lagoona blue. it's a personal headcanon of mine that lagoona is an aboriginal australian. yes, she's technically a fish. but don't you dare take this away from me. i feel like her character being played by an aboriginal woman would add so much depth to her storyline, given the fact that they had a movie where she essentially tried to change her race so that her boyfriend's racist family would accept her. like- you can't tell me miah wouldn't be perfect to execute that kind of storyline.

luka sabbat as deuce gorgon. am i typecasting a little? yes. however, i feel like luka's energy perfectly matches the laid back cool guy that is deuce (not whatever jughead wannabe they have right now). plus, i saw someone else mention how if they had casted a black guy to play deuce, they could have used braids as stand ins for snakes. and that actually got me thinking about locs. his locs could transform into snakes in some way. idk, i just think he'd be a good fit.

joshua bassett as heath burns. his face just matches. and i feel like he'd be perfect to play the goofy, wannabe-cool-guy jock that is heath. that's all.
