Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?

The thing is, since in German you have to decline/conjugate many words in relation to the noun they are refering to those monster words actually serve a purpose of making the language simpler. A common example is a (as in any) red wine (ein roter Wein) as compaired to the compound a red wine (ein Rotwein). If rot is an adjective it has to be conjugated: der rote Wein - des roten Weins - die roten Weine - and many more. But it if rot is part of the noun you only have to decline Wein: der Rotwein - des Rotweins - die Rotweine. So, die Verzweiflung über die Vermüllung der Umwelt is way longer than Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung and you would have to know three grammatical genders and the words’ respective declinations. Whereas for Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung you only need to know that Verzweiflung is grammatically feminine (die) and its deklinations.

The thing that I always want to point out to English speakers marvelling at German compounds is that we do this too! It’s a thing that Germanic languages are especially prone to!

It’s just conventional in English to keep writing spaces in between larger compounds, whereas in German it’s conventional to remove them. But they sound the same! Grammatically, they’re identical!

i can’t get over how crazy much ado is sometimes. it feels like a deconstruction of shakespeare’s other comedies when you look at how quick and lovesick and beautiful hero and claudio are and how well they fit the script of just classic young lovers, things like how hero is one of the only characters to speak in verse, the way claudio praises her to all his friends etc. and then how in the middle of the play the script is completely flipped. now hero is in danger because of what claudio believes and no one can help her. and suddenly the love story shatters because the same willingness claudio has to fall in love with her at first sight is the same willingness he has to believe a baseless accusation and the love story starts to descend into horror because there’s no legal course of action hero can appeal to her and her own father insults and disowns her at her wedding and she’s quite literally left for dead fainting on the ground with her father saying let her die, what is it to me? it’s insane because like 30 minutes before it’s just a happy comedy love story but shakespeare shows a real darkness to the genre because claudio may think he loves her but when it comes down to it he will never trust her. her word isn’t good enough. no one is going to listen to the woman

i wanna talk about how utterly delightful jin yuanbao and his little gang of misfits it because they are so so dear to me and their development is done exceptionally well

first off -- theyre not smart. they have no academic smarts, which is a given considering their status as impoverished commoners. but second -- arguably, they dont have the greatest street-smarts either. several times, theyve been beaten up by changyu, and it took them all those times to realise, hey, maybe we dont have a chance at winning a fight against this scrap of a girl! however, as changyu extends empathy to them, and we slowly find out the motivations behind their actions, they transform from 2-dimensional minor comic-relief-esque petty villains into multifacted 3-dimensional characters with massively relatable motivations, and thus, they worm their way into our hearts

they represent a concept thats very dear to my heart -- poverty breeds desperate people, and desperate people are capable of dealing great damage in order to secure a means of survival. however, as soon as you provide a semblance of job security + a steady income + an alternative means of survival, as changyu did with them, youll find that so many of these 'bad' people are capable of so much more. (this is why im such a huge supporter of universal basic income in our society)

bad people are never born bad; everyone is shaped by their circumstances. poverty and inequality is the real villain (those in the upper upper class would not be able to wield so much absolute destructive power if not for this vast inequality of wealth and power), and i adore how the show manages to convey this so effectively
