@neurodivergent-space-ace Hey, don't worry about it! Terminology is made and abandoned at such a rapid pace online it's basically impossible to keep on top of every new word :}

The simple answer is aromisia = arophobia.

The word came about after people were discussing how calling bigotry a "phobia" is misleading and potentially damaging to people with phobias. Part of the problem with framing bigotry as a phobia is it gives bigots a potential excuse to hide behind.

Calling prejudices phobias contributes so much the the stigmatization of mental health and assigning blame to those being harmed and Im so glad it’s being addressed and solutions have been made in our community. Friendly reminder that Saint Valentine was also the patron saint of bees, epilepsy, and the plague! Instead of going hog wild with the valentine’s day stuff if that isn’t your thing, consider these options:

-Plant some bee friendly plants native to your area. You could also pass out packets of seeds or starter plants to loved ones instead of cards or candy!

-Donate to epilepsy research or ask that anyone considering getting you a gift do the same.

-Remember that being a-spec is good and normal! Not everyone falls in love or has a wild, sexy holiday. It’s okay if you need to take a mental health day. Watch your favorite movie, play a video game, read about plague doctors, whatever it takes to get you to smile and relax.

Aromantic Valentines

no offence but i think a lot of us me included don’t actually want romantic love as badly as we think and really are just lonely and crave a closeness and intimacy that feels out of reach in friendships because of society’s emphasis on marriage and the nuclear family so we project that into the never ending search for a perfect love and a soulmate when really we all just want to mean something to someone

like i’m not dissing romantic love i would to be in love rn but i get so frustrated because humans are such social creatures and we need community to survive but we are taught that we need to pair off and so a lot of us spend a great majority of our lives lonely in between romantic encounters or we settle for less and give ourselves away to people because we are in constant fear of ending up completely isolated and alone and it’s so sad

This is called amatonormativity

100% amatonormativity, and this sense of loss or something missing in the definition of relationships is not limited to arospecs. Amatonormativity is baked into society as a whole (it’s way more expensive to live alone, for example) and its casualties have effects on everyone. It’s just that arospecs come into their identity and sense of self by way of examining these assumptions and trying to figure out what fits. You don’t have to be aro to ask those questions and challenge those assumptions!

But this is a legitimate phenomenon, and nobody’s listening to aros because we’re “cringe.” The more people we have across the spectrum of sexuality questioning “the way things are,” the better it’s going to be for all of us.

As I understand it, when Elizabeth Brake coined the term “Amatonormativity,” she was mainly thinking in terms of challenging the cultural supremacy of monogamous relationships.

So Amatonormativity is also concept of importance to polyamorous folks, too.

We’re back with more prompts for Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week (February 16-22)! This year, there’s a theme each day, and the days are grouped under 2 main hashtags: #ArosAndArrows (Aros And Arrows) and #BeingAromanticIs (Being Aromantic Is) which you can use on those days for your responses on Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, or any other platform that uses tags. aromantic men don’t get a lot of support, so im out here supporting: + aromantic trans men (binary or nonbinary) + aromantic cis men + aromantic men of color + aromantic jewish men + aromantic men-who-love-men  + aromantic men-who-love-women (this includes woman-exclusive attraction) + aromantic men-who-love-NBs + aromantic men who aren’t also asexual

and all aro men im missing here but need to see this right now! 

Aromantics are already portrayed as cold and predatory, and when you have to wrestle with toxic masculinity both internalized and pushed on you from the outside, it can be harder to hear that some people think so poorly of aromantic (especially alloaro) men.  Your feelings are not inherently predatory. Your orientation is not misogynistic. You’re not broken or ‘less of a man.’ You deserve respect, support, and community like any other person and I’m gonna make that loud and clear here!
