Free Textbooks

Y'all it's the beginning of the school year and I just spent 3 hours trying to find and download two textbooks so here we go again. Resources I use to follow. I email my profs in advance so that I have time to avoid the bookstore by hook or by crook.

• Book Genesis (has various domain names, search for current one) This has almost everything, but you have to search with the title only, and then read through the results to find the edition/author or it will find no results. The torrents don't always work, but if you click on the title it will take you to a "get" PDF link.

• Unpaywall, a browser extension that finds free sources for paywalled research papers and articles

• Pirates Bay, I hear it has textbooks, but it didn't have the ones I needed.

• As most of you know (but I didn't until recently) putting Filetype:PDF in front of a Google search will technically find you PDFs, but they are almost always "login and give us your credit card" scams

• check your school library, mine has interlibrary loan, so I can request whatever I want. This won't really work if you need the text all semester, but periodically? Absolutely.

• if you know upperclassmen/graduates ask if they have the books you need

• just don't ever but anything from the school bookstore

If a Prof doesn't specify, I usually email them and ask if I can rent an ebook copy or if I need the hardcover and explain that the ebook is cheaper. They know it is, and they usually don't care. So, I just don't specify that it's uh. 100% cheaper.

Ideologies of the three Lords

(spoilers for all routes)

I’ve heard some talk about ideologies and people not being sure who believes in what, so I wanted to do a little breakdown on the ideologies of the main lords based on 1) what their goals are and 2) what they’re willing to do to achieve them. The reason I emphasize the second is because methodology is an essential part of ideology, especially with these three. A methodology is an ideological decision on what can be sacrificed and what can’t for the sake of an end goal.

Short version:

Edelgard: Equality through force. Priority is eliminating influence of Crests and the Church.

*I use “force” instead of “revolution” because revolution comes from within, which only covers her actions in Adrestia. Force, specifically military force, is required for her plans for the rest of Fódlan. See below for more.

Dimitri: Equality through reform. Priority is eliminating racial inequality and avoiding violent conflict.

Claude: Equality through diplomacy. Priority is unification and eradicating racial inequality. 

In all, the Lords all have similar goals. Edelgard and Dimitri both agree that Crests are a problem. Dimitri and Claude both want to stop racial inequality. Edelgard and Claude both think the Church is a negative influence. While their main focuses are different, they have, for the most part, identified the same problems with Fódlan’s society and feel these need to be changed. Where they really distinguish themselves is in how they think change should be conducted.

Further, no Lord is explicitly what we’d identify as “left”- or “right”-wing in a contemporary framework. For example, all of them want equality, but how a person might define “equality” varies dramatically depending on your beliefs. Equality under Liberalism looks very different from equality under Communism, and we generally don’t get the kind of information that would clarify what their positions are in these frames.

Except that Claude discusses free markets. Claude Fire Emblem: your only Lord with an economic policy. 

NOTE: I like all of the Lords a lot. Like anyone, I have a favorite and my own opinions about their ideologies, but I love every Lord, am sympathetic to their perspectives, and tried very hard to be evenhanded in my descriptions of their points of view. This is not meant to hate on any of them. Please don’t be nasty about them here.

The Recruitment Freebies: Thoughts on Sylvain and Felix

Now when it comes to recruiting characters, there are 2 who kind of stand out and are, in their own way, somewhat ‘easier’ to get.

Sylvain joins you automatically if you’re playing fem Byleth, whereas Felix actually requires high stats/abilities that no one else does but since your primary weapon is most likely going to be a sword anyways and he requires sword skill, he’s actually not so hard to collect. Given that they’re both handy units (Felix kicks butt like no tomorrow, Sylvain is pretty customizable and gets a relic early on) you’re sorta encouraged to snatch one or both.

If you’ve seen them in their original environment, you’ll easily notice why: They’re kind of the kingdom’s token cynics.

For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.

It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.

I started Hebrew, which is why I’ve been dead on this blog, but I don’t think I can ever properly convey to you guys the sheer cultural whiplash of spending years learning Japanese from Japanese teachers and then trying to learn Hebrew from an Israeli

Japanese: you walk into class already apologizing for being alive Hebrew: you walk into class, the teacher insults you and you are expected to insult her back

Japanese: conjugates every single verb based on degree of intended politeness, nevermind keigo and honorifics Hebrew: Someone asked my teacher how to say “excuse me” and she laughed for several seconds before saying we shouldn’t worry about remembering that since we’ll never need to say it

Japanese: if you get one stroke wrong the entire kanji is incomprehensible Hebrew: cursive? script? fuck it do whatever you want, you don’t even have to write the vowels out unless you feel like it

Japanese: the closest thing there is to ‘bastard’ is an excessively direct ‘you’ pronoun Hebrew: ‘bitch’ translates directly

Fun fact: Israel has possibly the lowest power-distance metric of any culture in the world, while Japan has one of the highest. I didn’t realize that the CTO of my company was the CTO until somebody else told me, because everybody called him by his first name and engaged in mutual shit-talking/playful insults with him.
