Drag Path - Cal Kestis
iāve seen rots in theaters twice now and i cannot stop thinking about how the jedi order are stuck no matter what they do, not just in that movie but in a broad sense. if they donāt tie themselves to the republic, they have no resources to help people who need it. if they do tie themselves to the republic, then theyāre limited to republic jurisdiction. if they went around on their own doing what they thought was right, then theyāre arrogantly enforcing their will. if they stick to republic mandate, they become lapdogs who donāt care about everyday people. if they storm into the senate to try and take power away from the sith lord, theyāre a bunch of warrior cultists trying to greedily take power. if they let it happen, theyāre fascist enablers. theyāre so arrogant, but also any jedi that doesnāt just do whatever they want and āfollows the rulesā is a senate bootlicker. if they fight in the war theyāre hypocrites losing their way, but if they sit it out theyāre a bunch of hypocrites (again) in their ivory tower while people suffer. do the jedi and the council make mistakes, sure! but also like- what are they supposed to do? thereās never an easy right answer to almost any situation theyāre in, and they just have to do the best with what theyāve got
I joined the Rebellion and all I got was this sick leather jacket (aka I finished Andor last night so here's Kanan Jarrus in some classic rebel fashion).
One of the things I actually really like about the Fall of Anakin Skywalker was how it showed the true horror of a popular romance trope.
Over the years, in numerous books and countless fanfics, we've all seen some variation or another of the infamous "I'd burn the world down for you." And fans always swoon over this line because it's framed as this noble or romantic gesture where the character puts their love over everything else.
What I particularly loved about the prequels was that it showed what happened when the character, in this case, Anakin, actually did burn the world down "for PadmƩ" and we saw how terrifying and horrendous such a thing actually is.
Songs From The Soul

Fleeing the Empire, two Jedi find each other.
They knew each other, once. Not very well, since they hadn't been close. They'd never been friends, but they did know who the other used to be.
He was once naive. She was once joyful. Now they are older, more jaded, hurt and alone, abandoned by the galaxy they were supposed to swear to protect.
They were Padawans, they were children. They never got to pass the Knighthood Trials, never got the chance to swear their vows. Their braids were cut off by their own trembling hands, when it became too unsafe to wear such an obviously Jedi hair-style when their people are being hunted.
There are no hugs when they see each other, no shouting of names, no tears. They've cried enough, don't have tears to spare after all they've been through, and their voices are rough from lack of use and thickened with grief, and lower with the passing of time.
Yet in the Force they remain the same.
For the first time since the Order fell, since their home was desecrated and their family was slaughtered, the air around them sings.
It's mournful, it's barely making a sound, but after years of silence broken only by the screams of suffering and death, the Force is singing.
"You're alive" he breathes out, only his life-long belief and trust in the Force allowing him to believe his eyes.
"You survived" she says softly, voice barely above a whisper, words full of hope and relief.
They come closer to each other, and their souls are joined in a warm, relieved embrace. For the first time in what feels like forever, reaching out for the Force doesn't cause unbearable pain.
Reaching out for the Force now doesn't hurt at all. It's the best they've felt in years.
It feels like coming home.
Once upon a time there'd been thousands of hearts humming rythms of love and compassion, thousands of souls singing songs in the Force.
Now there are only two.
Yet after the many years of suffocating silence, of the constant pain and suffering, of neverending loneliness, it's the most beautiful song either of them has ever heard.
The time to go their separate ways comes too soon, but before being torn apart, before being ripped from their hopes and dreams and into the cruel reality they live in, he gives her one sole gift.
"May the Force be with you" he says, meaning every word and defiance coloring every syllable.
We are still here. You can't make us disappear.
She smiles, and the joy that comes with it is almost too much to bear.
"May the Force be with you too."
Hearing their people's farewell and good wish for the first time in what feels like forever, the two members from a community that should stay together go their separate ways.
Someday, in a future much closer than either survivor realizes, there will be thousands of souls raising their voices in the song of their people, in the song of the Jedi once again.
But for now there are two, and two is enough.
So I did some math.
Kanan in Rebels says that, before Order 66, there were ten thousand Jedi protecting the galaxy.
Let's be extremely generous here, and assume he means ten thousand Jedi Knights. And let's take it a step farther and assume that this is at the end of the Clone Wars when the Jedi were streched thin, and that normally the number of Jedi Knights and Masters is higher. Counting the Corps, Padawans and the increased number of Knights, the number of able, field-ready Jedi could double the 10,000 Kanan mentions.
So, 20,000 fully-fledged Jedi. Half to protect the galaxy, the other half to restore planets, give access to free education, etc.
Of course, we're working on the assumption that none of these Jedi is permanently injured and unable to return to the field, or that they don't have duties to tend to in the Temple like taking care of the younglings. I'm, again, being very, very generous here.
There are a trillion people on Couruscant alone.
This makes the people's expectations (both in and out of universe) of what the Jedi should do absolutely laughable.
They're not enough people to invade a single planet, they aren't even enough to fill a fucking football stadium in my country. You want them to end slavery while also holding negotiations, diplomatic missions and be omniscient enough to know about the Sith Grand Plan? Be fucking real, man. They're streched thin doing everything they can.
My 140 people quirky Church hasn't solved human traffiking on our 7 billion planet population (same exact ratio btw). Should we stop giving soup and home-made clothes to the poor and focus on an impossible goal so that we don't stray from our purpose?
All my estimates have been extremely generous, almost to an extreme, and as such they are probably not very acurate. It's way, way worse.
And that's barely scratching the surface. On numbers alone, the Jedi cannot do any of the shit you want them to do. If we count permanent injuries and disabilities that may take Jedi out of the field, children, elders, archivists and others, the number becomes much more depressing.
something something about Caleb Dume surviving the genocide of his people and divorcing himself from his culture and remaking himself entirely in order to survive
and something something about orphaned Ezra Bridger who loves Lothal but doesnāt quite belong being adopted into a self-made-cobbled-together family of outcasts from multiple cultures
and something something about Kanan choosing to embrace his culture and religion again despite his fear and the risk it brings to him and his family
and something something about Ezra embracing that culture as whole-heartedly as he can when so much of it has been lost
and something something about both of being denied the ability to practice certain aspects of their religion because otherwise they might be killed for it
and something something about Kanan remembering how Master Billaba carefully sheared his hair and oh so reverently plaited his Padawan braid and held it gently between her fingertips and told him she would do right by him and told him not to be afraid and told him she would be there for him until her dying breath and beyond and told him that he was going to be a great Jedi Knight one day and told him āyou are our future youngling and I will do everything in my power to protect that futureā
and something something about Kanan looking at Ezraās wild hair with something hollow and aching tucked between his ribs because he longs to show Ezra the devotion his Master showed him and her Master showed before her and his Master before him but itās not safe to gently plait that Padawan braid behind Ezraās ear because such a sign of devotion will mean death and Kanan can only hope that Ezra understands how much Kanan loves him and how much Kanan is proud of him and how much hope and life he sees in his Padawan because while that Padawan braid may be the physical link between future and past tying together generations of Masters and Padawans who have lived and loved and passed on because āwe are what they grow beyondāā
Kanan knows that every moment has led to this and Ezra is the future his Master and her Master before her never expected but they would be so proud to see Ezra now and Kanan can only hope Ezra knows how proud Kanan is of him too and know when he looks at Ezra he knows everything is going to be okay because āwe are what they grow beyondā and despite everything thatās been lost to them Ezra is carrying the heart and soul of thousands of years of legacy and Kanan looks at Ezra knowing he canāt give him that Padawan braid but heāll be damned if he canāt teach him the things that matter and heāll be damned if he doesnāt do everything to protect the future he sees in Ezraās eyes
The backstory for the horse is that he injures anyone who tries to ride him

Kanan and Fulcrum are twins.
Ahsoka Tano and Caleb Dume were not twins. They were born on different days three years apart and raised in different crĆØche clans. Caleb wrote his name in a grammar textbook beneath Ahsoka Tano with Sakshi AdelÄ and Olub Bolane between them.
But Caleb and Ahsoka died on the same day.
Caleb Dume died with Depa Billaba in the Kalleran snow. He was killed by blaster bolts that never touched him and was cremated in a pyre that burned only a padawan braid.
Ahsoka Tano died on a Venator above Mandalore with the click of a button and a ādonāt make me regret this.ā She was buried in a mass grave she dug herself.
Agent Fulcrum and Kanan Jarrus were born on the same day. They were both born in the snow. They swaddled themselves in tattered cloaks; their first cries were choked sobs. Tears froze to their cheeks. Around them, the Force wept at thousands of deaths and millions of minds robbed of their will.

I know Baylan was being dismissive when he used the term āBokken Jediā but I just love it so much. The kids who inherited the mantle in a world at war, the Jedi who made do, making the best of bad situations, cobbling everything together, taking those wooden training sabers, taking them with a will and building, building back up, adapting themselves but carrying forward what they can of what came before. Kids trained in an era where the Jedi had to fight for the right to exist going yes this is me this is who I am. Reaching out for each other, for community, for the heritage that is theirs if they choose to claim it. Itās really beautiful. Feeling emotional about the Bokken Jedi
You know itās incredibly interesting, how the jedi was received vs the sith
When they were thought as myths like the sith were
The jedi were viewed as mythical and mysterious protectors and helpers even if they were thought of as traitors
When the sith were treated as myths
they were treated with such terror and disgust and horror they would have been rejected outright once everyone learns about their plans
Even if there were a few people like the banite line they were rejected and resisted at every opportunity possible
When you think about the contrasting parallelsļæ¼ between the two
Itās quite astonishing
Now hereās the real question: is there any good reason why both are so treated differently when they were believed to be gone at least in the public eye?
I think for the Jedi, it's a case of- "no one appreciates you or what you do until they no longer benefit from it."
So like, when the Jedi were alive and around to help people, no one really appreciated them. From what we see in TCW, the senators basically just bossed the Jedi around at their whims, political leaders from the planets they went to just plain disrespected them (think Satine, Chairman Cho, Tee Watt Kaa, Doge Urus, etc.), and even some regular people held hostile feelings towards the Jedi.
Obviously this was all during a time of war but, from how they Jedi react to those things, it gives the impression that it's not uncommon---and personally, if that's how people act when the Jedi are literally on the frontlines saving their asses, I can't imagine they treated them any nicer before all that.
But then the Jedi get genocided.
And the people of the galaxy fucking cheer and celebrate.
...but then Palpatine and his Empire start expanding, start showing their true colors, start holding everything in an iron grip...and it starts to dawn on people that the Empire fucking sucks, only now there's no Republic---no Jedi---for them to call on for help.
And people suddenly start to realize all that the Jedi did to help, how much they really benefited from the Jedi being around to help---and so the "legend" of the Jedi becomes one of healers and protectors and people who helped the galaxy thrive.
----------
For the Sith, I think that the reason they're regarded with such terror even when they're "myths," is because that's the legacy that the Sith left behind.
Sideous plunged the galaxy into a Dark Age of oppression and suffering.
Dooku led a fascist dictatorship that invaded other planets to kill and enslave their people, while also destroying the planets themselves.
Maul killed countless innocents and caused mass destruction wherever he went.
And don't even get me started on all the bullshit Anakin pulled.
So when the Sith are dead and gone, when people look back at their legacy, that's what they remember.
----------
So, for both cases, I think it's a- "hindsight is 20/20" -thing.
They're seeing the Jedi and the Sith for what they were.
Only, with the Jedi, people were so used to having them around and benefitting from what they did, that they didn't appreciate it or see it until the Jedi were gone.
#one chaotic found family
something about kanan jarrus referring to powerful force-wielder and ex-sith darth maul as āgrandpaā to his face
And this is why I firmly believe Kanan Jarrus would tell a āyour momā joke to count Dookuās face
Kanan Jarrus gives zero fucks. Heās a young space dad to a teenage mandalorian and a force user. His space wifeās bestie is a war criminal. Heās part of a rebellion after being a child soldier then a space vagabond. Former Sith Lord? Yeah that tracks for his life.
Do you ever think about Depa Billaba and Jaro Tapalās force ghosts watching their padawan grow into the definition of Jedi knights - selfless, compassionate, always looking to make the galaxy a better place and they have to do it by looking pure evil in the face every day and never flinching - and smiling next to them as they follow them along their journeys?
Now you do
