I live in the united states these people are, like, my neighbors
Sniles so sneetly. And really the common aversion to studying the ideologies you're opposed to is coming from the christian idea that knowledge of evil is itself somehow contaminating. Which in turn has its roots in/motivated by discouraging critical thinking for fear of disobedience. This is why science is blasphemy. Isn't this fun? I can do this all day

Iâm kinda surprised that nalbinding isnât as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.
I guess itâs because itâs slower or something.
Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw
It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.
Some people even make rugs.
I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they donât know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding
Yeah I hadnât heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.
I was surprised that Iâd never heard of it though. Itâs older than knitting and crocheting and even though itâs been done all over the world itâs super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so Iâm surprised Iâve never heard of it.
It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.
You also donât need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.
Itâs also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isnât really necessary.
Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.
I've been wanting to do so, I cannot find anyone who can teach me, and any books I can find on it are Ass in the Visual Learning department. Otherwise I'd be making the hell outta some nalbinded fabric

Protection from discrimination under law, to include the right of equal access to single-sex spaces as appropriate to one's gender, and protection from workplace discrimination, with wilful misgendering categorized explicitly as hate speech.

Something I loved in Platform Decay was the whole thing of "sigils" being, very clearly like, emojis. I can't recall if they're mentioned much before this book, but the way Sofi uses them makes it clear what they really are.
Which makes this reread funny when, a few pages in, I'm hit with this line:

Humanity has finally reached the stars and found out why no one had contacted us. The universe is in a sad state. As such, Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, and many othe charities go intergalactic.
The thing the recruiters donât tell you about space battles is that you die slowly.
Ships donât blow up cleanly in flashes and sparks. Oh, if youâre in the engine room, youâll probably die instantly, but away from that? In the computer core, or the communications hub? You just lose power. And have to sit, air going stale and room slowly cooling, while you wait to find out if the battle is won or lost.
If itâs lost, nobody comes for you.
It had been about half a day (thatâs a Raithar day, probably a bit shorter than yours) and Kvala and I were pretty sure we had lost. Kvala was injured, Traav and I were dehydrated and exhausted, and Louv was dead, hit by shrapnel when the conduits blew.
Most fleets give you something, of course. For Raithari, itâs essence of windgrass. I looked at the vial.
âItâs too soon,â Traav said.
Kvala gestured negation, shakily. She had been burned when conduits blew, and her feathers were charred, and her leftmost eye was bubbly and blind now. Even if we were rescued, she probably wouldnât survive. âYou know weâre losing the war.â
They couldnât deny that. âIt doesnât mean we lost the battle.â
âDoesnât it? The Chreee have better technology. Better resources. And they have their warrior code. They donât care if they die.â
âWe canât give up!â Traav protested. They were young, a young and reckless thar who had listened to a recruiting officer and still believed scraps of what they had been told. âAny heartbeat nowââ

Kvala exchanged glances with me. The Chreee never bothered to hunt down survivors. What was the point, after all?

And then the blast door opened, and a figure stood in it. My first thought was, robot? Thatâs almost worse than Aushkune . . . But no, it was a being in some sort of suit.
Who wore suits?
âFriendly contact,â the suitâs sound system blared, as the being moved over to Kvala. âUrgent treatment. Evacuation.â
âWho are you?â Kvala struggled upright.
Despite the primitive suit, the blocky being was using up-to-date medical scanners. âLow frequency right angle shape,â it explainedâor maybe didnât explain. Two more figures came into the room and put Kvala firmly onto a stretcher.
âYouâre with the Chreee, arenât you?â Kvala was not at all happy to be on a stretcher.
âNot Chreee,â the sound system said. âYou Man. Soil Starship Nichols.â The being hesitated. âRescue Chreee as well. On ship. Will separate.â
âYou what?â I said faintly. Who would do that?
âOath,â the being explained.
âWhat kind of oath? To what deity?â
The shoulders of the being moved up and down. âSeveral different. Also none. For me, none. Justâoath.â
I exchanged glances with Traav, who looked as unsettled as I was. I had never, ever heard of groups cooperating when they couldnât even swear to or by the same power.
The being scanned me. âHave water,â it said. âRecommend.â
Raithari have fast metabolisms. I couldâwouldâdie of thirst quickly, and painfully.
âWhere will you take us,â Traav asked, âafter you give us water?â
âRaithari to Raithar. Chreee to Chreeeholm.â
âChreeeholm would kill them for failing,â Traav remarked.
The being hesitated, and then said, âWar news sometimes bad. Sometimes lie.â
We had learned long ago not to believe the recruiting officers, but what did that have to do with anything?
âAnd youâwhat?â I asked. âJust fly around looking for battles and rescuing victims?â
The being seemed to consider this. âBest invention of soil,â it said finally.
Most of what it was saying didnât make any sense. Did it worship soil? But it had said that it had sworn to no deity . . .
Madness.
On the other handâwar was a deliberate, rational act by deliberate, rational people, and I wanted no more of it. So why not embrace madness and see what happened?
âSoil StarshipâRrikkol?â I asked, stumbling over the word.
âYes. Soil Starship Nichols.â
I followed the being in the suit.
Took me well over a minute to realize "low frequency right angle shape" was Red Cross.

For the this year's celebration of the Glorious 25th of May let me present to you my latest project.
Lady's Sybil Ramkin leather corset for a stage adaptation of sir Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards! From sketch to final costume with lovely Errol the Dragon.
Corset made from genuine textured sheepskin and a lots of brass details like buckles, eyelets and studs. Straps has functional buckles and can be adjusted if necessary. Corset has cotton lining with lilac blossom print (I'm not sorry, I can't help myself, I wouldn't miss this chance for a little Easter hard-boiled egg). All creative processes was under strict supervision of my copilot Jarvis, as usual.
I saw her perform today in Guards! Guards! and she was an excellent Lady Sybil. I wasn't sure when I saw the posts if it was going to be the one I was going to but it was and it was great and she was great and I got to tell my bestie that the lining was lilacs đ
This honestly made my day. Especially lining mentioning, little secret for those who was there.
