Sorry, but I've got to disagree with you on cats v ragtime. Cats won director - that's the thing people liked about it. The new direction and concept. At the end of the day, cats is a worse show. "It's just about cats, Hal" even today. Ragtime is the better book and music. The last few years with the Jamie Lloyd wins have sort of warped what a best revival can be. A faithful remounting done exceptionally well is very much an excellent revival. And if your argument is that jellicle ball is telling a more important story than ragtime, I think you've confused a concept with story. There is no story in cats, that's the entire thing about cats. So yeah, I think winning best direction is appropriate and deserved but it isn't a better show overall than ragtime.

And I don't think Nichelle not winning on her first nomination has anything to do with trying to keep ragtime in its place or anything like that. She's very talented (and will be nominated again) but it could've easily gone to Hannah cruz.

That aside, I never said that Cats had a better book, or that the jellicle ball was a better story than Ragtime, although mind you Cats won best musical and swept the year it was nominated which Ragtime did not. So im not sure where you're getting the idea that nobody likes Cats. What I said was that the jellicle ball, was creative and gave Cats something completely original and new which is what I personally like to see in a revival. If you dont like Cats in general then thats your prerogative. But i dont see anything wrong in saying that sometimes a revival that is just a shinier rehash of what came before is a little boring 🤷🏾‍♀️. I also dont think that my saying I wouldve liked to see Cats win best revival means that im not happy for the cast and crew of Ragtime.

I also just think its kinda funny that you hopped in my inbox to argue against my take on Cats, but you didn't mention Rocky Horror or what I said about that show at all. Because Rocky Horror was also up for best revival, and my criticism was the same. Im not saying you can't have a faithful revival or that anything is wrong with that, im saying that its also okay to try something different.

And Im still holding my opinions about Nichelle not winning. Who cares if it was her first nomination? How many other performers have won a Tony on their first nomination? Its not a rare occurrence and im not the only person who thought Nichelle should have won this year. Broadway's been snubbing POC in favor of more white productions for ages 🤷🏾‍♀️ there's no reason to pretend thats not true.

Anyways, at the end of the day im glad Joshua Henry won, im sad Nichelle lost, I think the jellicle ball deserved best revival but I also love Ragtime so I'm not mad. The end.

🙃🙃🙃 okay but is this a safe space? Because I KNOW the Tonys is rigged and biased and all that. But Cats the jellicle ball deserved best revival as much if not more than Ragtime. I LOVE ragtime. Its one of my favorite musicals but just like I said about Rocky Horror, it didnt really do anything groundbreaking. Its just really opportune timing to launch a revival of Ragtime. (Although imo Hair would've been better but thats another conversation)

All this to say, Cats the jellicle ball was such a creative, charismatic, and special reimagining of a musical that people either love or hate. It did everything the BS Cats movie couldnt. And I truly think it didnt win best revival because of how unapologetically Black and queer it is. Ragtime was a safer option at the end of the day.

BUT at the same time, I definitely also think the reason Nichelle Lewis didnt win best supporting is because they dont want to give Ragtime tooo much. Especially if they give Josh Henry best actor in a musical. But im just a theater girly on her couch, what do I know 🤷🏾‍♀️

This might be a really unpopular opinion but the rocky horror revival just didnt do it for me.

😭 I love it because I love rocky horror but I feel like its kinda coasting on the people's love for it. Idk I just feel like it could be reimagined in such creative ways and instead we just got regular classic RH with a star stacked cast 🤷🏾‍♀️
