Okay, this is pretty incredible. A 3D artist, consulting scholars and archaeologists, worked for a year and a half in Blender to create a reconstruction of pre-Columbian Tenochtitlán, complete with the surrounding landscape. It’s staggeringly beautiful, and—at least to me—gives a wonderful impression of the city as a place where people worked and lived and worshiped

Nope, still not lazy

So I’d been watching these posts on executive dysfunction go by, and yeah, some of it sounded familiar, like I know I’ve got that issue SOMETIMES, but like… People keep describing it as thinking insistently about the thing they want to do and still not being able to do it. And I don’t do that. I think idly about something like putting away that basket of laundry, and my entire being goes ‘Meh’ and I shrug and move on to something else. Like. It drives me NUTS that there’s been a basket full of clothes sitting in one corner for months, but… at the same time I can’t really care about it?

So I figured, okay, I’m SELECTIVELY lazy. Sometimes it’s legitimately executive dysfunction, but sometimes I just don’t care enough to do something.

And then this morning, I woke up and realized: I had executive function. I mean literally the minute I woke up I realized I was capable of DOING THINGS today, it was AMAZING. And even with chronic fatigue meaning I had to rest for hours after like twenty minutes of exertion, I got SO MUCH DONE that I have been YEARNING to be able to want/to do. If I list it it won’t sound like much, but trust me, I did a LOT, for me.

And it felt SO GOOD. Because, spoiler! I’m not actually lazy. My form of executive dysfunction just looks a little different than some people’s. When I can’t do a thing, not only can I not mentally surround the steps it would take to do that thing, I can’t even manage to care about doing the thing. Maybe that’s some kind of emotional defense I’ve built up to keep it from being so maddening, I don’t know. But it doesn’t mean I’m lazy. It just means my brain has realized I can’t do the thing, and I can’t afford to care, or think about doing the thing, because pounding my head against that brick wall won’t help anything.

So hey. If, back before you had executive dysfunction, you really LIKED cleaning, just for instance? And now you find you’re ‘fine’ living in a mess? It might just be your brain protecting you from its issues. You’re not lazy, executive dysfunction is just even sneakier than we think.

The thing is, I’ve been like this LITERALLY my entire life. From when I was a tiny child being told to clean my room. To being a teen and not being able to keep up with all my homework. Although I have been MORE functional and productive than I am now, I have never been what I or others would consider “normal”.

And paradoxically because I’ve always been this way I feel like that undermines any legitimacy my claim of executive dysfunction may have, as though the fact that I’ve never had a “normal” to decline from means I have simply NEVER tried hard enough.

It’s fucked up. I hate it. It’s awful.

I'd been wondering about this too, ever since I heard about executive dysfunction. If I really want to do something, I usually do it. The problem comes when I don't have the motivation to do it.

I struggle with laundry, too. It takes me forever to do it, or the basket will sit untouched in my room because "I'll do it later," and I can't bring myself to care. I would rather dig through It to find whatever I need on a daily basis than actually fold and put things away, even though that's objectively easier.

I also have a really, really hard time getting out of bed in the morning, or getting up to do something in general. I make excuses, like, okay, I'll get up at x time and start on it. Or let me just finish this one thing. Or I have plenty of time to do that, I'll get it done later! But then later comes and I've run out of time and I have a hard time completing it because I still don't want to do it, or it never gets done at all. I'm frequently late going to work or getting ready to go places at all because of this, because I think I have more time than I really do, or I just can't drag myself out of bed even if I'm actively going 'get up, get up, you're going to be late if you don't go now', but instead of inciting the slight panic I need to get moving, I just... don't care.

This even affects things I enjoy! I've wasted an entire weekend once because I wanted to write, but I couldn't. I would get ready and either stare at prompts or a blank screen until I gave up, because my brain just... refused to engage, even though I knew it would come much easier once I just got started. Spoiler alert: I didn't write so much as a single word that entire weekend of actively trying, and I hated myself for it because I felt like it was my fault, even though it wasn't.

question for any entomologists out there: if bumblebees were of a comparable size to, say, a kitten, would they enjoy resting in my lap while i gently comb their fuzz with a barbie brush? i know that i would enjoy that but i hope they would as well.

hi! as an entomologist who specializes in bumble bees— my answer is probably yes! many, if not all insects groom themselves as a way to keep clean and to keep their senses sharp, but in societies of insects (specifically bees) we see them groom each other, and colonies of bees who have more allogrooming are typically stronger and healthier! these bees who groom others are integral to the colony, and we see grooming in other social insects like termites as well, specifically in relation to the queen. you might have more luck with a flea comb than a barbie brush, just to really mimic the feeling of them and others grooming it, but i like to think they would enjoy being cleaned and pampered :)

As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms 

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
