when thinking about how oppression works, on a structural level, my guiding principle is that I must spend at least as much time looking down as I do looking up.

what do I mean by this? here's an example. when my surgery is delayed multiple times, I spend a little time looking up (there is only one surgeon in the entire area who will perform this surgery on trans people, so every trans person's surgical timeline is bottle-necked and delayed by months every time he goes to a conference or takes a vacation or experiences an injury. in other words, if I was cis, I would not encounter this difficulty in accessing surgery). and then I spend time looking down (due to nonstop harassment and legal threats, this practice now only treats adults and will no longer perform surgeries on minors. in other words, my access to surgery is predicated on adult privilege I have at the direct expense of trans youth's lack of access).

if you do not build a habit around thinking in this way, you will become the person Audre Lorde describes as "so enamored of her own oppression that she cannot see her heelprint upon another woman's face." If we are seeking to dismantle structures of oppression, rather than to simply use and climb them, then we absolutely must make a practice of looking in both directions, especially when we feel like we're on the bottom.

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

This change has rolled out on my mobile browser and it has already had such a negative impact on my Tumblr experience. I hate that comments/replies are siloed by reblog chains and I have to click around to other reblog chains to see other comments. I also enjoy scrolling through tag and comment additions and their full count isn't showing up on the actual post, so a decade old popular post may have tens of thousands of reblogs but I may only see a count of one. I want to actually see the cumulative note count and actually give credit to the OP when I interact with a post.

As a frequent reblogger, I also am much more stressed about which reblog chain I am reblogging and am far less likely to add an addition of my own out of fear of taking engagement away from OP. This will also make it significantly harder for OPs to keep tabs on what's happening in reblog chains.

This change has so many downsides with essentially no benefit, and will further discourage original content being posted on this platform.

I will say I think so far WOTR has done a fairly good job bringing complexity and nuance to something that could have been a simple good vs evil dichotomy re: the crusades. This is done in not the off putting what if demons were good and angels were bad way but in digging into the hefty costs and unwilling sacrifices made within the crusade movement in itself. Scorched forests and neglected, starving villages abandoned by their leadership, Galfrey's singular focus that lets the societal problems of Mendev fall to the wayside, and those fissures in society as deep and harmful as the worldwound itself, the implication from the start that people are directed to demons from positions of disenfranchisement engendered by those fissures.

This is not even to mention the toll it has taken on crusaders themselves that has gone unaccounted for, including the first crusaders whose suffering was forgotten and whose children were literally left to rot where the light can never reach them. Galfrey gives me the impression that while being hopeful and true to her ideals, she is desperately wanting this war to be over and then she can tend to everything else. But Mendev is falling apart as we speak. The world is wounded by more than just the worldwound. And so much of those wounds are brushed neatly beneath the rug of this glorious holy war that they're trying desperately to survive. And like. There's no easy answer to any of it. To call off the crusades is to allow the world to fall. And it asks for so much and it takes everything but the story told about it forgets so many of the people it has always proclaimed to be fighting for. Man. It's just so sad.

the phasmid in disco elysium has to be in the 99.99th percentile of effectiveness for characters that, when i actually interacted with them first, changed my perception of the entire world a piece of media had built up. like DE, pre-phasmid, has some wondrous magical realism kind of elements that appear more as you progress (the existence of the pale and its whole deal, harry’s skills allowing him insight he should not have, etc) that juxtapose some of the more gritty and real aspects (we’re investigating a murder here. and an extremely politically and emotionally charged one at that) but i just feel like the phasmid’s appearance really solidifies that yes, this game does feature serious topics and interactions that are desperate and sad and violent, but oh my god we have to keep going. like oh my GOD we have to keep living so bad. there’s hope and here is wonder still undiscovered by the rest of the world. there’s more to see out there and while we have that we have to continue seeking it out. things can be strange and impossible and beautiful and so sad at the same time and i want to see it all. all bc this big fuck-off insect that looks like a clump of reeds told me to do it for the working class. nods. okay phasmid. okay
