yes, i think media can be looked at through a critical lens and still enjoyed…sometimes. but not when the issue is the media in question being entirely built upon racism, whitewashing, antisemitism, and antiromanyism – AND the actress playing the lead role has been openly racist towards romani people since she took on the role of whitewashing a famously jewish romani character. she has continuously and openly used anti-romani slurs, despite being publicly made aware and asked not to as far back as 2014 during AOU press.
it has been pointed out that wanda especially, has always had some problematic romani stereotypes in her character (being a mysterious foreign witch trope, to paraphrase), but with each new retelling of a character’s story, there is a chance to remedy that and do better by the character and the real life people who share that race, ethnicity, gender, disability, etc. etc. etc. (sorry i can’t recall exactly who said this).
but instead, the mcu chose to ignore vital parts of these characters’ stories by casting white actors, writing the characters as people who would join a n*zi organization, putting them in some fake eastern european country (in the comics, the twins are central european), imply that the twins (who are culturally, if not ethnically - idk there was a retcon situation a few years ago - jewish in the comics) are christian by placing multiple crosses in wanda’s avengers compound bedroom for literally no reason, and then cherry pick all the negative romani stereotypes to keep and use as jokes and negative character traits for the twins.
and the fact that anyone is willing to not only look past what the mcu is doing with the maximoffs, but support it, is really gross and let’s be real, racist. and don’t even get me started on the anti-Blackness in this show…
idk, i just think we could do a lot more with our time that would actually help marginalized people, like jewish and romani folks, instead of making a bunch of elizabeth olsen white!wanda gifsets.
because all i see is a blatant “we don’t care” from the fandom at large and well, fans from marginalized communities are taking note.
anyway here’s an article to learn some more, you can check my anti wandavision tag where i’ve been reblogging relevant posts, and i really recommend checking out @scarlet–wiccan’s posts about all this because it’s most important to actually listen to what romani folks are saying about this and amplify those voices.
