I wish I could favorite things a hundred times but instead I will do it once and then reblog it while crying.
imagine how much more fucked up the history of the world would be if eating someone's brains reliably conferred on you their memory and knowledge
My cartoon for yesterday’s @Guardian books.
P.S. you can order my books of cartoons here: https://tomgauld.com/comic-books-v2
just had a really stable moment where i opened a redbull at the exact same second someone started playing industrial music in the apartment below and i briefly thought it was coming from inside the redbull can
I think we should figure out what age we’re living in now so we can say how it’s collapsing to each other
Our age of plastics is collapsing
Our age of information is collapsing! *remembers generative AI, nods to self* our age of information is collapsing.
just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular
what is your LEAST favorite stitch?
I don't like counted work at fucking all. So: the cross stitch.
reading this as someone who does cross stitch but is scared of the other kinds of embroidery is like overhearing an incredibly tall and buff person say they have beef with Mr. Tom, the kitten that chills at the bookstore
FUCK Mr. Tom and his stupid little fluffy tail ok. And his little charted designs.
Okay, but this neglects the true villain of embroidery stitches: the French knot
Don't you dare malign my girl again
Ok the french knot is very useful but it is a BITCH to do it consistently
We talk about how this website’s hate mail game is insane, but this might just be a new level
"skill issue" made entirely from French knots is a next level roast. no coming back from that one. damn
Am I your special little boy
Not particularly
This is a really fun post so far
I like this meme because the stock photos make it seem like the same woman but 10 years older.
You know what yeah sure ill give it a shot.
No midroll ads and it’s just a polite man playing hitman with meditative music in the background this is actually just insane enough to be my new favorite thing to fall asleep to
“Now I will drop this man here and quietly snap his neck. The Mackerel claims its first victim” okay I’m here for life.
I did what I cautiously believe to be maths last night and came to the conclusion that when pursuing the orcs from Tol Brandir, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas travel about 125 miles/201km in four days. A distance which according to google maps would take 2 and half days to walk. Aha you think, Éomer is silly for being so impressed with them - except no!
That’s 2 and a half days if you walk without stopping. And the trio explicitly don’t and can’t travel at night because they fear losing the tracks in the dark, so they only have about 12 hours of travel time each day. Which means they crammed about 60 hours of travel into 48 hours, which is patently insane. No wonder Éomer is like holy shit guys
Had a coworker tell me they hadn’t texted once because of the time. “I didn’t want to wake you.”
I stared at them through the dawning realization that they lived in a world where that was remotely possible. “My phone is on do not disturb if I’m sleeping. Why would I let random texts wake me up? My sleep is important.”
Equally baffled they replied, “What if someone at work needs you?”
“I am not a manager. No one at work will ever need me badly enough to interrupt my sleep. If I’m not working then there’s no reason to be calling me.”
“Not even if you need to cover?”
I laughed, “I don’t need to cover. They could ask me to cover but good luck getting ahold of me if I’m sleeping.”
They looked distressed at this idea.
To console them I added, “I have important people like my mom and my wife set to override. If they call they get through no matter what.”
There was a small pause before they asked, “You can do that…?”
So friendly reminder. Become unreachable. Work does not need you that badly. Sleep.
it's truly insane how much more functional society would be and how much happier everyone would be if every job was perpetually 10% overstaffed (and people who weren't needed could chill and rotate in when needed while still getting paid) instead of 10-50% understaffed but that wouldn't be 'efficient' (in the short term, for shareholders) so fuck everyone I guess
My spouse and I were talking last night and the jeans problem came up so I want to talk about it with tumblr here.
The jeans problem was the favorite lecture one of my philosophy professors in college gave about the history of jeans and how it ties into capitalism/mainstream culture absorbing and monetizing any counterculture it encounters. So prior to the 1950s jeans were mostly an item of work-wear that you wore on the job as a farmer or factory worker or miner because they were cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. If you were off the job you'd wear what we'd call now dress pants or slacks. This changes in the 1950s when youth culture start wearing jeans as regular clothing, again because they're cheap, durable, and hard-wearing. But then jeans get absorbed by the culture and we start getting designer jeans, acid-washed jeans, pre-ripped jeans, and now we got people shelling out hundreds of dollars for "povertycore" aesthetic. And now jeans aren't even cheap, durable, and hard-wearing.
This came up because my spouse was talking about thrifting and spooky things (two of her favorite things) and how there was this trend of buying a landscape painting from a thrift store which was probably going to end up in a garbage dump and painting a sheet ghost on it to make it art millennials would like. But now you can go to Michael's or Home Goods or wherever and just buy a landscape painting with a sheet ghost on it, mass-manufactured by a corporation. The counter-culture once again being monetized and absorbed by the culture. It's the jeans problem again.
This is why you see so many many many "we can't vote our way out of this" posts online. They know that sentiment will depress turnout. Turnout that will get the people paying them kicked out of power.
Vote
Hungarian voters were smart on an individual level, throwing their support behind Magyar over how they might have traditionally voted, but there was an institutional element to it as well: it took most of the other parties dropping out of contention in order to clear the decks and avoid vote-splitting, which was a brave and principled thing for them to do.
I think that for every character that is meaningfully trans in fiction we need five who are just trans for the hell of it. Stick a trans flag on their laptop or something and never comment on it. That sort of shit. I'm talking about the media landscape in general, not specific works.
There is a distinction between a trans character and a character that happens to be trans, and i feel very strongly that the former suffers greatly in a media environment where there is not enough of the latter. When all trans characters are trying to say something about being trans, then that is all trans characters are allowed to be. Minority case studies, nothing more. But if characters are trans incidentally, if that is normal, then a character trying to say something about being trans has much more depth.
I fully encourage people to just slap "trans" on any random character with hardly a thought and call it good. Don't even try to make it deeper if you don't feel like it. And don't worry too much about unfortunate implications, I find that many real world trans people are "unfortunate" if you look at them through that lens, because people are diverse and not just minority case studies.
I do not want the ai overview. I want to read six wikipedia pages as god intended.
