• a customer sharply reminding me she was buying a gift for a boy when i suggested play food

• a customer telling her daughter she needed to pick a different birthday card for her friend because the one she chose had a pink envelope (her friend was a boy)

• a customer asking what a boy would like for valentine’s day instead of the stuffed dogs she was getting for the girls

• a customer getting upset when my coworker used blue ribbon on a gift bag because the present was for a girl

• a customer saying a toy guitar was “too girly” for her grandson, based only on the fact that the box had a picture of a girl playing with it (the guitar was red with yellow music notes)

The fact that Hayley Kiyoko, the most known and accepted millennial lesbian, recently had to quickly delete a TikTok video she filmed because she realised that people would be annoyed by the fact that she doesn’t like when her friends talk about penises, sensing she would be called transphobic for it (which of course happened) tells you everything you need to know about the huge amount of lesbophobia we have to bear in this day and age.

Lesbians must talk about our sexual orientation. We must make the jokes we want to make regarding our sexual orientations without being looked down upon by non-homosexuals who are too insecure to let us live peacefully. If the most visible of us delete something that relates to all lesbians there is a problem of rampant lesbophobia. There is very much the possibility she was advised to do it which is even worst because ... publicists, including straight ones, nowadays might still control the lives of lesbians ? So, I will say it for Hayley and for the entire lesbian community. Don’t let others push you in a second closet of shame.
