just finished chapter 25/24 of atcoewfa and im screaming crying and decidedly not throwing up because of gabe’s emetephobia :(

hot take: thomas didn’t die at the end of don’t let the forest in

i will admit, i looked at spoilers for the book before i finished it. knowing what happens and being prepared for every possible outcome is something i need most of the time because it helps a lot with my anxiety. but when i looked for spoilers, every source told me that it was “open ended”, but heavily implied that thomas died.

so i went through the second half of the book under the impression it was going to be a sad ending, but when I got to the last three or so chapters, i was taken off guard.

“cut out a heart and bury it in the woods”

that’s what the monsters told andrew. that’s what i thought he was going to do to thomas.

and then i found a few lines that made me question that. andrew tells thomas that “I’m the tithe”

but this is the line that completely convinced me.

“that notebook was his everything, his most precious possesion, his heart made paper.”

HIS HEART MADE PAPER.

it’s confirmed that he buries the notebook, and he earlier thinks that there is enough room for a heart on top of the notebook, but in chapter 34, he says that the box cutter is the thing on top of the notebook.

and then thomas speaks

he literally speaks to andrew

and I know that they can never be the same and likely never lead lives near other people again, but I’m fairly certain they still have lives to lead. im sure there are plenty of loopholes in this theory, but I just wanted to share my interpretation of the ending :)
