How to Write When You Don't Feel Like Yourself
There are going to be days (or weeks, or months) where you sit down to write and feel... disconnected. From your voice, from your characters, from your ideas. Like the person who used to write your stories just packed up and left.
They didn't. They're just tired. Here's how to keep writing anyway:
Lower the bar (Until it's on the floor) You are not here to write something brilliant. You are here to write something. A paragraph. A sentence. A single line of dialogue. Movement matters way more than quality.
Write around the story Don't force it. If you can't write the scene, try: ⋆ A character ramble / journal entry ⋆ A conversation that won't be included in the final draft ⋆ A list of things the character would never admit out loud ⋆ A messy summary of what should happen Engage with the story from a different angle.
Borrow a voice until yours comes back No, not with AI. Read something that feels close to what you want to write, or watch a scene that captures the tone, then write immediately after. Not to copy, to reignite your instincts.
Write the emotion, not the plot. What is your character feeling in this moment? What are they afraid of? What do they want but won't say? What's being kept from them? The emotion leads, the plot catches up later.
Stop trying to "feel like a writer" first. You don't write when you feel like a writer. You feel like a writer because you write.
You are still a writer, even on the days it feels distant. Especially then.
cliff marleau and ilya rozanov are best friends not because they’re teammates or marleau was assigned to look after roz when he first got to the raiders, but because, even though it takes so much alcohol to get him drunk, when ilya gets drunk he can only be described as white girl wasted and marly is the EXACT same way. they are in the mens bathroom in front of the mirror like “is my shirt unbuttoned enough for people to look at my tits?” “yeah man your boobs look GREAT! can you tell me if these jeans look good on my ass i think i saw a girl eying me” “marly your ass looks phenomenal and you can trust me on this as i am a well known ass man” “aw man rozzy you’re making me blush”
roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people

AU IDEA — AntiMachus / SharpWolf
Odysseus is in real estate, bought and renovated a bunch of this big city they live in and Antinous is from a lower class black family that got evicted due to Odysseus' company's activities. Antinous' family struggled to bounce back, had to couch surf for a while and struggled to find employment because of it as rent prices increased drastically. Full of anger and a deep sense of injustice, Antinous takes it out on Telemachus when he realises Odysseus' son is in the same high school as him.
And Antinous is truly terrible to him. Harassing and isolating him, mocking him, pushing him around, wrestling him to the ground... never so much as to cross the line into illegality, no full-on physical fights, no theft or destruction. But definitely making Telemachus' life hell.
But wouldn't it be so funny if... Telemachus' anger despite his fear ignited something in Antinous. What if he started fantasising about "putting him in his place" in a different way. What if he got himself off to the thought many times throughout the years but chalked it up to wanting to humiliate and debase Telemachus.
Then they graduate, aren't around each other anymore, Antinous does some maturing and happens to realise he's queer. Maybe he explores his sexuality and all. Maybe he still has a type, from years of fantasies and obsessions. Maybe he downloads grindr. Maybe he matches with another anonymous guy on there and they chat. Conversation flows so easily, banter as well as flirting, and they plan to meet up a few days later.
They text a bit in the meantime and damn, they really get along well. The guy's sharp, witty, and so hot and Antinous is hooked. They send pics but never of their faces, no names either because hey that's still a stranger online. Then finally they're both free at the same time and meet up and...
"Will I never get over you? Why do you keep haunting me?"
So much resentment, heavy history, prejudice and anger. And so much attraction, it's so unfair. Fuck that guy. Fuck that guy.
PSA : I want Antinous to have to make amends for his past behaviour, not letting him off the hook because he has a sad backstory. Bullying is disgusting and can be deeply traumatising and I do not ever want to minimise that. It does make for nice enemies to lovers material here, though!

THIS RIGHT HERE
You guys are dangerously close to realizing specifically what kinds of people they keep from voting and why.
I want to drill this into everybody’s head:
The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world
Black Americans and Latin people make up the majority of this population (many of whom are non-violent offenders)
Federal Prisons in America require that their state keeps their prisons at a maximum occupancy at all times.
The 13th amendment did not entirely abolish slavery…just one form of it. It remains legal through industrial prison system
Oh and we have privatized prisons which allow companies to actually make money off of keeping people incarcerated
Here’s what’s really perverse: prisoners, who cannot vote, still get counted in the U.S. Census. The more prisoners a county has, the more representation it gets, even though the prisoners cannot vote. See how that works? The more black and brown people they lock up, the more government resources and political representation they get. Even though those prisoners have no say and cannot vote.
If county-A has a population of 50 voters but no prisons, and county-B has a population of 50 voters and 50 prisoners, the county with the prisoners gets more government funding and more political represention. This is sometimes called “prison gerrymandering” and it is used in redistrictring.
Not so fun Fact: Southern states that reliably vote for Republicans also have the highest prison population in the United States. (source). So mass incarceration is a double whammy. It’s both a form of voter suppression and a tool to strengthen white people’s political power.
