It wasn’t even two years after the incident by the lake than Lily started dating James. It was only a year! Petunia and Vernon get married in winter of Lily’s 7th year and she introduces James to them at dinner before that, so it’s already serious. Meaning that Lily and James basically had to get together as soon as 7th year started. Snape’s Worst Memory happened in summer of 5th year. So we’re talking 14/15 months, max.

I know I’m meant to believe that Lily is just such a wonderful person who gave James a chance because of her wonderful forgiving nature and her wonderful way of seeing the best in people and giving them the space and grace to change. But I’m not buying it. To get in to a committed relationship a mere year after she witnessed James choke, humiliate, and sexually expose another boy…either she was extraordinarily naive, or she already liked him when he was at his cruellest and jumped at the chance to date him the minute he became a bit more socially acceptable.

Yeah fr, that's my main problem with Lily's character

Like she's not friends with Sev anymore, so she might just not care about him, but idk I'd be terrified to be near a person who can so easily do that to any person.

I mean really, I'd be horrified if someone did that to Tom Riddle himself, so it's pretty clear that the compassion for people she's not friends with is just not there.

Keep in mind that James has literally been harassing her to go out with him like the entire time she was at Hogwarts, the fact that she could think "oh, he changed, he's learned how to accept boundaries!!" a year after he sexually assaulted Severus and then asked her to go out with him in the same sentence, man I'd run the other way.

Now, as much as it hurts, Lily was completely justified in cutting Severus off when he called here a mudblood, but dating his bully a year later like holy shit she must've hated him.

Poor Severus, he deserved a better friend.

Why Lily was a bad friend

I always read something like: Lily was a good girl, the best friend, but Snape was a Death Eater and he was obsessed.

I didn’t notice her like a character at all, she was more a neutral to me, because everyone said, that she was so good and so beautiful and so awesome. She was Harry’s mother and I understood that she is an important for Harry and to some people. But then I read The prince’s tale. Oh, well. How can I start? The first thing, that I didn’t like: she used Severus even they were a children. He told everything about Hogwarts and Wizarding World. I think that was a reason why she wanted to be his “friend”. Lily lived with her sister, who hated her and when Lily realized that she is a witch, she was happy, because now Lily has some privileges.

When Lily came to Hogwarts Express, there was a scene:

"You didn't think it was such a freak's school when you wrote to the headmaster and begged him to take you."

Petunia turned scarlet.

"Beg? I didn't beg!"

"I saw his reply. It was very kind."

"You shouldn't have read " whispered Petunia, "that was my private ¨how could you ?"

Lily gave herself away by half-glancing toward where Snape stood nearby. Petunia gasped.

"That boy found it! You and that boy have been sneaking in my room!"

"No" Now Lily was on the defensive. "Severus saw the envelope, and he couldn't believe a Muggle could have contacted Hogwarts, that's all!

Okay, now it seems, like she actually defense Severus, but no. She said, that Severus did that. Severus saw, Severus found... why? She defense herself, not Severus. I had the same situation in childhood and I defended my friend and said it was my fault. Lily literally enjoyed this moment, when she can show to her sister who is a muggle and who is a witch.

Then in Hogwarts:

"...thought we were supposed to be friends?" Snape was saying, "Best friends?"

"We are, Sev, but I don't like some of the people you're hanging round with! I'm sorry, but I detest Avery and Mulciber! Mulciber! What do you see in him, Sev, he's creepy! D'you know what he tried to do to Mary Macdonald the other day?"

Lily had reached a pillar and leaned against it, looking up into the thin, sallow face.

"That was nothing," said Snape. "It was a laugh, that's all"

"It was Dark Magic, and if you think that's funny "

Yeah, Lily, it was a dark magic, but why you wasn’t terrifying, what James and Sirius did to your “best friend”? Or you are so good and so kind only to rich boys? Or maybe you just didn’t care.

Severus asked a logical question:

"What about the stuff Potter and his mates get up to?" demanded Snape. His color rose again as he said it, unable, it seemed, to hold in his resentment.

"What's Potter got to do with anything?" said Lily.

Oh, my God. Of course, you don’t know.

"They sneak out at night. There's something weird about that Lupin. Where does he keep going?"

"He's ill," said Lily. "They say he's ill "

"Every month at the full moon?" said Snape.

"I know your theory," said Lily, and she sounded cold. "Why are you so obsessed with them anyway? Why do you care what they're doing at night?"

He is obsessed? No, Lily, you are obsessed with defense. They bullied him all years in Hogwarts. Of course Severus hate them, it’s a normal reaction. I know, people can say, that Lily was a child, but when I was a fifteen years old, I wasn’t so stupid.

"I'm just trying to show you they're not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are."

The intensity of his gaze made her blush.

"They don't use Dark Magic, though." She dropped her voice. "And you're being really ungrateful. I heard what happened the other night. You went sneaking down that tunnel by the Whomping Willow, and James Potter saved you from whatever's down there.

“LILY, THEY TRIED TO KILL ME DOWN THERE”

Then was a mudblood scene. She literally smiled, she didn’t help, she said: LeAvE hIm aLoNe. What? If my friend was hung upside down, I certainly wouldn't say leave him alone. I would curse the bully properly and go straight to the headmaster or at least to the teacher. Why Lily didn’t go to the headmaster or to the teachers earlier? She just didn’t care about Severus at all. Because I can’t explain, why fifteen years old girl, who sees every day, that James Potter bully her “best friend” and she does nothing. Then Severus called her a mudblood. I have one theory and I believe that’s a canon. Levicorpus was Severus’s spell. He created it. And why Lily had a successes in potions? I am sure, that Severus gave own book to her and she saw all spells. Levicorpus is non-verbal spell and no one can learn it just by hearing. So, Lily gave book to James. He read this spell and used it. If this is true (at least it seems logical), so Lily is a fucking piece of shit. She gave best friend’s book where were a hints to his bully.

Then Lily was angry and said:

Fine,' she said coolly. 'I won't bother in future. And I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus.'

Later, when Severus try to apologize, she said:

To call me Mudblood? But you call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?"

Yeah, girl. Like YOU, rich and beautiful human, said to poor, ugly friend wash your pants. It was a classism.

"It's too late. I've made excuses for you for years. None of my friends can understand why I even talk to you. You and your precious little Death Eater friends ¨ you see, you don't even deny it! You don't even deny that's what you're all aiming to be! You can't wait to join You-Know-Who, can you?"

Okay, if you already saw that he is so bad and awful, why you continued this “friendship” Why? Nobody actually forced you. Why? If he wasn’t good enough, just say: Sorry, but I think, I don’t want to be your friend anymore. That’s it. You literally can do this.

Three years later Lily was married with James, who was “ an arrogant toerag”. Hmmm, okay. Sirius and Remus said, that James didn’t bully anyone but Severus. Lily didn’t know about it. Sorry, I don’t believe.

Results:

Lily didn’t care about Severus and their “friendship”. She gaslighted him all the time. She saw how difficult was his childhood, she saw his abusive father and their life before school. She didn’t help when James bullied him. And no, saying LEAVE HIM ALONE is not a help. If she wanted to help, she did it. Lily used Severus in Potions, before school, when he told everything about Wizarding World and then she gave his book to his bully. She is not a friend. She is just a girl, who wanted something from Severus. And yes, everyone say: IT’S NOT HER JOB, HE BECAME TO A DEATH EATER AND USED DARK MAGIC. She knew that all the time. If this was a problem, she could leave. If she was terrified about death eaters shit, she could talk with him. She knew how difficult life he has. It’s not her job, that’s right. Or maybe she is just a shitty friend?

5th year. the marauders have just finished creating the map.

before this, severus can at least convince himself that running into james and sirius is bad luck. they’re bullies.

hogwarts is only so big. eventually your paths cross. they know where he is.

he skips dinner to hide in the library. they’re there.

he leaves potions early to take a route no one uses. they’re waiting.

he studies in an abandoned classroom three floors away from where he usually sits. somehow they “happen” to walk in five minutes later.

he starts changing his routines. doubling back. deliberately taking longer routes. hiding in broom cupboards just to see if they’re actually following him.

it doesn’t matter.

they always find him.

and severus’s paranoia is now boundless. because no one believes him? how could they? when he doesn’t even have proof. when they all think he’s just being like this because the marauders are always on his nerves.

so he decides to solve the problem himself.

is someone telling them where he is? is hogwarts enchanted? are they using some obscure tracking spell? he starts testing hypotheses because this is impossible. no fifteen-year-olds should be able to predict another person’s movements with this kind of accuracy.

while trying to figure out how they keep finding him, he starts noticing all the other things that don’t make sense. remus disappears every month. pomfrey escorts him off somewhere. the others get weirdly defensive whenever anyone asks where he’s been. there’s that bloody tree on the grounds no one’s allowed near.

in severus’s head, all of these clues become one giant mystery. he thinks if he figures out what they’re hiding, he’ll finally understand how they always know where he is.

and then sirius realizes exactly what’s happening. instead of just telling him how to get past the whomping willow, he says something like,

“you want to know how we keep finding you? go through the willow tonight.”

and of course severus goes.

He is not the main victim!

I realized something revolting regarding the werewolf "joke" that Sirius played on Severus.

The Marauders' out-of-touch fans portray Remus as the main victim who was hurt and wronged by his "boyfriend." I'm not saying Remus wasn't a victim—because he was—but he wasn't the main one, he wasn't the one wronged or most harmed; that was Severus!

The Marauders' alienated fans have the irritating habit of turning abusers into innocent victims and transforming the victim into an abuser and persecutor who deserved all the humiliations and aggressions caused by the Marauders.

So please stop portraying the Marauders as innocent victims, when the real victim you hate and despise has been replaced by a background character whose personality has been stolen!

But that was just a rant!

Refering to how the marauders treated Severus as ‘bullying’ is downplaying and watering it down.

Because this abused young boy was sexually assaulted, molested publically humiliated on more then one occasion degraded and nearly killed. The sole reason being just because he existed

As far as how Severus being Neville’s boggart has to do with anything, you need to realize that Neville is written to be a cowardly character who is easily intimidated. And Neville hasn’t seen many traumatic things like other characters, so an unsettling and kind of mean teacher could easily become his boggart just for that reason alone. Not because Severus has hurt Neville in any way or traumatized him to any degree

the fact that Dumbledore took the cloak from James, then later gave it to Harry in his first year, so... through all that time it was with him, and... do you think Dumbledore ever mentioned it to Severus? or did he only find out about it at the end of PoA?

because it was kind of a pretty significant thing for him, since, well, 100% during his time at school there must have been a million moments when he thought that... he felt some kind of presence somewhere but just couldn’t see anyone. when the Marauders knew things they shouldn’t have known. possibly when he was hexed from some random spot and had no idea where it came from or who did it.... well, he probably guessed Who, he just didn’t understand how or where from.

i think if this knowledge had come out at the end of PoA, it would have been very, very stressful for him.

Well, honestly, I think he had absolutely no idea, because if he had known, he would’ve caught on to Harry using the Cloak way earlier in Philosopher’s Stone. I don’t think he knew. I don’t think he had a fucking clue. Dumbledore didn’t tell him.

And maybe he didn’t tell him because he didn’t want to add more fuel to the fire, thinking that if he explained it, Severus would resent the kid even more. Like: “Oh, right, so this was the reason? And on top of being cowards who were incapable of attacking me one by one, who had to gang up on me when I was alone because they knew they couldn’t take me otherwise, they were hiding too?”

I mean, honestly, I find it incredible that J.K. Rowling genuinely tries to convince us that those four were Gryffindors because people who are incapable of doing their shitty things alone and need to hide under a magical object that makes them invisible so they can attack people and play pranks… I mean, to me they’re the absolute peak of having no balls. I swear someone should’ve smacked each of them round the head and said: “You’re all idiots. And your balls never dropped as babies, apparently.”

But anyway, I don’t think he told him. I think maybe consciously he didn’t tell him for the reasons I mentioned at the start, not wanting to stir things up further or reopen wounds. But I also don’t think he gave much of a shit in another sense. And I’m not saying that to defend Dumbledore. I think because he never really saw that bullying as serious, never truly considered it bullying at all, he probably just saw it as kids being kids, and his golden boys couldn’t possibly be actual abusers.

Because in the end we have to understand that admitting his precious boys were bullies would’ve meant admitting that he himself had been negligent, that he had been prejudiced, and that he’d failed not only Severus but a whole group of children he’d essentially abandoned and left to fend for themselves, thinking: whatever happens to them happens, I’m not dealing with it. If they have problems, I’ll wash my hands of it. He would’ve had to admit that to himself.

And Dumbledore is someone with a huge ego. His whole self-image is built around the idea of having sacrificed what he wanted most for the greater good, right? He suppresses and represses everything he feels in favour of what’s supposedly right. So I think his entire image of himself is built around that idea: I did this, therefore this ideal stands above me. So admitting that he’s still prejudiced, still negligent, and that he contributed to the abuse, marginalisation and radicalisation of a lot of children would crack that spotless image he has of himself. So he would never do it.

But genuinely, I don’t think he did tell him. Consciously, because of the reasons I mentioned at the beginning, not wanting to make things worse. And unconsciously, because underneath it all, telling him would mean admitting a mistake, admitting a mistake would mean admitting he’s a piece of shit, and admitting that would mean accepting that all the things he believes he sacrificed and abandoned for some greater purpose didn’t magically make him a better person, because he’d still have a lot to unpack and confront within himself.

And an ego like his —especially in a man, and especially in an older man— can’t handle that, because that’s just how men are.

The hypocrisy of the fandom becomes very apparent when it comes to the Mary/Mulciber and James/Severus situations.

The facts are:

Mulciber attempted something on Mary that involved Dark Magic.

He DID NOT commit sexual assault. That's not Canon.

But the fandom invented sexual assault on his part in order to portray Mulciber (and, by being his friend, Severus) as evil.

James, on the other hand, DID assault Severus.

It was sexual assault.

He actually did it.

But the fandom does not care, because the victim is Severus and the perpetrator is James.

I hate how people are saying that black stayed in grimmauld (idc how to spell it) place because it would have been a danger if he was spotted and he really wanted to be a part of the war effort but couldn't. The ONE time your fav went out to fight in the actual war, he died. If he had just stayed put, he could've had the responsibility of taking care of potter like a guardian but no he's just so stupid and useless the one time he went out to fight like he wanted to, he got booked by his own cousin no less. Mind you they both were in Azkaban for long periods of time, so they were both out of practice but Bellatrix still held her own.

On that note, never compare any of the Mauraders to Severus, they are nothing compared to him your favs have a collective dialogue of one chapter. Severus had a whole BOOK named after him. The whole book revolved around him. Severus could've been an animagus, but the Mauraders could never have the creativity and dedication to make new spells and improve potions. None.
