The incident happened many weeks ago now. Everything just seemed so much different from before. Being kicked out by his mum and having to live inside the community centre just instated that more. heād not even spent one day with the new crowd of people heād have to spend 6 weeks with before something had gone wrong. he felt so lost, everyone else had something but he didnāt. for gods sake the little creep simon had something cool to boast about if he chose to. but not Nathan, he was just boring old him. He lit a cigarette as he sat outside in the cold, it was pretty dark seeing as the early hour. He looked off at the lake, taking slow drags of his cigarette, the smoke burning the back of his throat as he inhaled, ash falling onto his jeans with each drag. His head was full of shit thoughts, thoughts about his mum leaving him again to āsaveā her relationship, having nobody want to talk to him. Not even his friends that heād known since school. He had tried to get along with the people from community service, he thought kelly was nice, or maybe he just wanted to get with her? He wasn't sure, however heād never really been able to differentiate between the two. Curtis was alright,he could have a laugh with him, he didnāt really care for Alisha. I mean she was nice and all but, he didnāt care. Simon on the other hand, hated that little prick, he was quiet too quiet and that freaked him out.
He snapped out of his thoughts as the tinge of ash from the cigarette began to burn his lips, pulling it away and stubbing it out onto the pavement below his feet. He checked his phone. no missed calls. no new messages. nothing. He sighed, shoving it back into his jacket pocket and slouching back onto the bench. his fingers grazing over the edge of the wood as he contemplated everything. he thought of begging his mum to let him go home, to let him stay, to leave jeremy and live like the old times, the good times. he ultimately decided to forget about, deciding he had now way of changing her mind. he took a second before standing up and stretching, he spotted someone walk past and gave a small awkward smile before heading back into the community center, through a small window in the back. he truly hated having to sneak about just for comfort and a roof under his head. he could use a shower and a fucking shit, but he wasnāt going to get that here. It just wasnāt home.
As seven rolled around he knew that heād soon be getting some company. Simon was never late, but punctual. always arriving early, before everyone else, bedsides nathan of course. he leaned against the wall of the locker room, looking through his ipod at all the different playlists he owned, knowing how awkward it would be to be alone with that freak. he never knew how to talk to him, how to not make fun of him, but god he couldnāt help it. all his words seemed so offensive . Simon had never laughed at his jokes, just looked offended. He closed his eyes and let his head rest against the cold tiled wall, and before he knew it he heard a door opening. He let out a soft sigh, opening his eyes and watching as Simon walked in, placed his bag down and opened his locker. not noticing Nathan. It didn't take long for him to get all his things put away, before starting to change into his orange community service jumpsuit. Nathan groaned, annoyed that he hadnāt been noticed yet ājesus! I'm in here, you know!ā At his words Simon jolted slightly, peaking behind his locker door and staring at Nathan āsorry, i thought nobody was here yetā he mumbled looking away awkwardly and pulling his jumper back on. Nathan stood up, stretching slightly and scoffing as he walked past Simon, āyeah right, course you didnātā he teased giving him a dirty look as he walked out of the locker room.
Nobody else had arrived yet,Nathan checked his phone 8:03am heād still have another hour before anyone else would bother to show up. an awkward hour spent with an awkward guy. He rolled his eyes, watching as Simon walked past and outside, he didnāt care that heād already started working. He was no way in hell going to spend time with him alone, besides he was hungry. he got up and searched his pockets for some change, finding nothing but an old receipt and some fluff. he sighed resting his head against the vending machine before leaning back and kicking it, once, twice and three times to no avail. with one last kick and nothing dropping, he leaned his head back and sighed, before spotting Simon. ābarry! have you got some change? i uhā he paused turning around, āused all mine, stupid fucking thing wonāt workā his voice came out in a frustrated sigh. Simon gave a small nod back, ignoring the obvious that his name was in fact not ābarryā and walking over. He pulled out a small handful of coins, checked them in his hand and looked up at Nathan, "I have three pound fiftyā before he could get a reply, Nathan had already snatched the coins into his own hand and shoved them into the machine. eagerly grabbing what heād paid for and patting Simon on the shoulder before walking past him. not one thank you said or even muttered, Nathan never said thank you.
He sat down once more, stuffing his face with the crisps heād paid for with Simon's money. A smug grin on his face as he enjoyed himself. Once more Simon was awkwardly standing by Nathan, "I donāt think anyone else is showing upā he mumbled. Nathan's heart dropped at his words, looking up and raising his eyebrows as he tried to think of an excuse for why they wouldnāt be in. god he wouldnāt be able to survive a day with him. He couldn't even say he had to go home, he had no home to go to. He pulled his phone out, checking to see if heād had any messages from the others, none. so he brushed it off, maybe they were just late? and continued to eat his crisps. Chewing loudly as he spoke, ātheyāre just late, Jesusā he looked up, mouth full of food āyou got a crush on them or what?ā. Simon shook his head, his face red with embarrassment as he stuttered out a short reply āno?ā.
Over the next few minutes Nathan sat awkwardly in silence, and Simon lingered by his side watching the doors as if anticipating the arrival of the others. the only sound being nathanās loud eating and occasional burps. his phone began to ring, desperate to get out of the awkward moment he answered, ākelly, the kellster! why arenāt you here yet. iāve been fucking stuck with the freak for like two hours..ā he tilted his head as he spoke, his voice hushed but tinged with utter annoyance. her voice crackled over the line, audible for nathan, yet simon could only hear the hum of her words. āoh come on! please..ā he sighed ultimately giving up on begging for her to come in, and hanging up the phone muttering to himself āfor fucks sakeā before looking up at simon. his hands were shoved into his pockets, standing just as awkwardly as he always did. āare you just gonna stand there?ā he groaned, stretching in his chair and scrunching up the crisp packet. simon shook his head looking back at nathan with his awkwardly shy face, āno, we need to do our it community serviceā he mumbled playing with a tissue in his pocket as he spoke. nathan stood, rolling his eyes and giving simon a dirty look, he passed the crisp packet to him and walked off with a smug grin.
It didnāt take long for Nathan to get bored of doing nothing. He'd been sitting outside smoking as he watched Simon do his community service for him. Such a wanker, he thought to himself, pulling at a strand of his curls as simon walked over with a rubbish bag. placing it down next to Nathan before speaking, ādo you want to get lunch with me?ā Nathan looked up, raising his eyebrows, āare you asking me out on a date?ā he scoffed blowing smoke as he spoke. quickly shaking his head simon mumbled out a response, āno? i just thought we could get some lunchā. Nathan gave a small grin, before fixing his face and feigning a shocked expression. āi am not your toy boy!ā before he could speak again, his stomach growled earning a small smile from simon. āiāll payā he spoke softly, watching as Nathan sighed and stood up, ādonāt think i like you because of thisā he muttered under his breath, walking off without another word.
The walk was awkward, Nathan's face stayed glued to scrolling through nothing on his phone, while Simon tried to spot a place for lunch. He stopped by a small local all day breakfast,it looked pretty run down. graffiti on the side and a few bin bags resting by the door. Nathan stopped by his side, āyouāre really taking me to this shithole?ā he groaned, he was truly quite hungry, having only eaten the crisps and a small chocolate bar in the past few days and didnāt actually care about where he ate. Yet he couldnāt help but try and make simon feel bad just once more. He pushed open the door and pulled his jacket on tighter as he took as seat on one of the cracking leather chairs, expectantly looking up at simon. simon took a seat himself, pulling out the menu and skimming through it āare you getting something?ā he mumbled looking around for a waiter, nathan took the menu. his eyes scanning over the food until they landed on a particularly shit looking burger, sighing he pointed it out āthatā before leaning back in the chair and stretching as he waited for his meal.
It took a while to finally be dished out to them, half cold half warm. the perfect microwaved temperature. Nathan looked at his plate, lifting up the bun of the burger before letting it flop back down. Once more he didnāt bother with a thank you, just took a large bite and chewed greedily as Simon ate his own. The majority of the meal was as silent as could be. just the loud obnoxious sounds of Nathan's mouth, and the soft chews of Simon's filing the small place. After finishing their meals Nathan stood, stretching and letting out a groan as he walked off. Simon watched, wondering if Nathan was just going to leave. yet he knew Nathan wouldnāt, he hoped so anyway. He got up and paid, grabbed his things before heading to the bathroom where Nathan leaned against the wall texting someone on his phone. He looked up lazily, spotting Simon āare you watching me?ā he mocked rolling his eyes, "I knew you had a thing for me, just canāt get enough of this?ā his hands gesture to his body, tilting his head as he spoke in that same arrogance he seemed to wear with pride. simonās gaze diverted away, looking at the mirror instead of nathan, shaking his head and walking to the sink to wash his hands for no apparent reason, seeing as he hadnāt even used the bathroom. āno i just wondered if youād leftā nathan leaned off the wall, stuffing his hands into his jean pockets, grinning as he watched simon wash his hands āawe youāre worried about me now?ā his eyes searched simonās face, biting his lip slightly as he watched simon shy away. he couldnāt help it, embarrassing others was much easier then being embarrassed, and heād sure had his fair share of embarrassment.
They both left in silence, Nathan taking the lead as he began walking in the direction of the community center. hands still stuffed into his pockets as his hair bounced with each step. Simon watched him for a moment, before walking behind him, hoping maybe heād stop and wait for him. But he knew that wasnāt going to happen. He sped up a slight, soon catching up and walking by nathanās side. he earned a look, one of great annoyance. Nathan had always seemed to walk at a slight angle, maybe it was his height or could he have one slightly longer leg than the other? Due to this his shoulder seemed to accidentally brush against Simon's. He instantly straightened his posture, looking at Simon with a rude expression before rolling his eyes. Simon played it off, pretending not to have noticed, but that small accidental gesture made him want to smile. As awkward as the first walk was, the walk back seemed to be even more. No words spoken, a few side glances and even stubble eye rolls from Nathan. Nobody had shown up in the time they were gone, leaving Nathan alone with Simon for longer than he could ever want. The rest of the day seemed to be the most awkward, Nathan could merely scroll through his ipod in hopes it would pass the time, yet it didnāt seem to change much. as they finished up and headed to the locker room Nathan changed and stood awkwardly, not wanting to leave as he had nowhere to go. but not wanting Simon to notice him stay. Simon was soon finished, grabbing his bag and locking his locker before looking over at Nathan, who looked away trying to act as if he was still busy getting his things. āsee you tomorrowā he smiled, his hand clutching the strap of his bag. nathan nodded, an uninterested look painting his face as he expectantly waited for him to leave, āare you waiting for me or something?ā he mumbled pushing his locker closed and raising an eyebrow. he hoped to god simon wasnāt, there was no way in hell heād walk with simon. he had no reason, no home no nothing. so where would he even pretend to go? simon shook his head in response, his smile fading, as he turned around putting his headphones on. heād tried to make nathan feel less awkward, as he himself felt as though nathan felt forced to be there with him. he brushed off the feeling, heading out of the locker room and looking behind him. nathan wasnāt following. maybe he was busy? he could have someone picking him up simon thought to himself as he walked out of the building.
nathan sat inside the locker room for while after simon had left, still scrolling over his ipod as he slouched in the bench his head resting against the dirty tiled wall. still no calls, no texts. nothing. he rolled his eyes sitting up straighter and stretching. he was so alone. heād never really complained about being by himself, that was just the way life went. But now, being by himself in the worst possible place he could be. without friends, with nobody to text or call. nobody to see. no money to spend and no food to eat. He dragged himself to the mezzanine level, sitting down on his shitty, thin foam mattress. sighing to himself as he pulled out his last little bits of tobacco from inside his cigarette tin. a carefully rolled his last cigarette, face dull and cold as he stared off the mezzanine level. god he felt disgusting, so messy. not just physically but mentally. he felt so drained, so alone. He had nobody, not even his own mother. and god knows his father is a lost cause. he might the cigarette, taking a drag before laying back on his shitty thin mattress. he once more scrolled through his messages, nothing. god heād even appreciate a text from simon at this point. but he knew that wasnāt going to happen, for Simon really had no reason to text him. i mean itās not like nathan had ever tried to show some kind of care towards the poor boy. alas he put his phone down, taking one last drag of his cigarette before pinching the burning end between his index and his thumb and putting it back into his tin. He lay back, closing his eyes and letting himself fall asleep.
he woke up as the brightness of the sun shone through the undoubtedly large windows of community centre.his head banging and his back aching like there was no tomorrow. he sat up, pulling his legs together and looking off the mezzanine. of course nobody was there, why would they be? so he stood, stretching as he took himself to the bathroom to relieve himself. his feet stuck to the pissed stained floor as he pushed open one of the stalls, quickly using the bathroom before he heard a noise. he first brushed it off, putting himself back and pushing open stall door to stare off into the mirror. and then it hit him. āshitā he groaned, quickly heading out of the bathroom and peaking out into the hallway. there he was. that fucking creep. nathan sighed, running a hand through his hair, and muttering to himself āfucking hellā. as of yet, nobody had found out his little secret. that he was in fact; homeless. well at least he hoped, that with Kelly's unhelpful telepathy. simon hadnāt seemed to see him, just walked over to the door that lead to the locker room. nathan grinned, feeling a slight relief wash over him. he took himself back up to the mezzanine, pulling his jeans back on and grabbing his phone, ipod, jacket and shoes. throwing them on before heading out of the building and walking around the block. he walked once, then twice. every few minutes checking his phone. still no texts. not even his mum, not kelly or curtis. he took himself back to the only place he could, the wertham fucking community center. he pushed the door open, walking in with his familiar arrogance and heading to the locker room. simon was there, of course. nathan pretended to have not seen him, grabbed his jumpsuit and began to undress. having been listening to music and scrolling through his blog, simon had been sat on the small bench inside the locker room. heād initially thought heād heard something when heād first got there, but brushed it off. nathan was soon finished. he slammed is locked closed before ānoticingā simon. āWere you watching me?ā he teased rolling his eyes as he watched simon pull his headphones out. āno,ā he spoke softly, looking up at nathan as he let his headphone fall onto his shoulders āi was updating my blogā. nathan noticed his phone. he smirked leaning down and grabbing it. āaha!ā he grinned scrolling through the pages of pictures until he came across a picture of himself. his face fell, his cheeks turning a slight red as he looked at simon with an annoyed but almost confused expression. simon immediately looked up, realising what heād seen. he reached out trying to grab his phone. āwhen did..ā he looks at the picture once more, his face turning to disgust as he passed the phone back to simon wipping his hands off on his thighs, āi donāt even want to know what youāve done with thatā he scoffs walking off and muttering āfucking puffā. and with that he was once again gone.
He paced around the outside of the community center for a while before sitting on the grass behind it. wondering where the others were, if theyād shown up, if they two had seen the pictures Simon had posted. He took his last half cigarette, lighting it and taking a long annoyed drag. He pulled out his phone, looking to see his messages. and finally there was one.
āhey. simon said u was pissed off, u out?ā
he rolled his eyes, of course the one time he needed to be alone. she finally wanted to see him. before he could reply, he saw kelly walk over, cigarette in her hand and smile on her face. āyou alright?ā she spoke her accent muffled slightly as she leaned to sit down. he gave a small nod, pulling his cigarette away from his lips and feigning a smile āyeah im grandā he mumbled, yet his voice told another story. kelly looked over, and sighed āyoure a cunt to simon like,ā she stopped to take a drag of her cigarette, speaking as she blew out smoke into his direction āhe aināt done nothing to youā. the smoke stung nathanās eyes a slight, but he looked away and scoffed, āyeah, right. that kid is a fucking creepā he earned himself a slap on the shoulder and looked over at her. his expression softening slightly as he feigned pain, āow!ā he let out a soft chuckle before looking at his dirty shoes. kelly looked out at the community centre, āyou know, heās only trying to be nice like. heās a good blokeā she mumbled knowning nathan likely wouldnāt listen, āsaid he saw you, earlier like. guess iām not the only one who knows nowā at that nathan looked over, one eyebrow slightly perched up, āknows what? that iām a fuck up. well doneā he rolls his eyes. āIf you want to know everything so badly, then yeah I'm not okay. but iām sure you already knew that..ā he mumbled āseeing as you canāt keep your fucking head out of mine.ā Kelly scoffed, putting out her cigarette and standing up, rolling her eyes. āyou know what, fuck you, yeah?ā Nathan only nodded in response, his cigarette now burning the tips of his fingers as he watched her walk away. And then he was alone, finally. Though it never truly felt as though he was. His head was so full of thoughts, why wont she call me back? Why does he have a picture of me? What the fuck have I ever done wrong? Why can't I just be like them? He sighed putting out his ciggerette before heading back inside the community centre.
The whole day felt awkward as ever, he felt so ashamed for making Kelly upset. For practically shouting at her, for pushing her away. As they all wrapped up for the day dressing back into their normal clothes rather than the stupid jumpsuit, Nathan broke the awkward silence ādo you want to go for a drink?ā he didn't direct it to anyone just smirked with his familiar cockiness at the group. Kelly rolled her eyes, closing her locker and walking off. Alisha scoffed and muttered āuhm why would i want to have a drink with you?ā before rolling her eyes and pulling on Curtis' sleeve, who only gave a small smirk back to Nathan as they walked off. Nathan's face fell slightly, feeling let down. Simon noticed this and smiled āIāll go for a drink with youā his eyes searching Nathan's face, almost as if testing his reaction to see if he'd just spew hate back at him. Nathan looked over, making a face before sighing āif you're buying them then, whateverā his voice was tinged with annoyance yet there was a slight tone of surprise. He grabbed his jacket, throwing it on, his brain shouting at him to be rude or to make a joke. But he truly could even be bothered to try anything. Simon waited, his bag over his shoulder as he leaned against the tiled wall. He let Nathan walk first, then soon followed after him. The air was cold, and painted with the smell of smoke, not only from the generally polluted air, but Nathan's own cigarette. Simon rarely went out with people, sometimes he'd go out, and see people. To sit in pubs and watch people enjoy interactions he'd never had experienced himself. To watch as people enjoyed dates, even wishing he was one the participants. And this to him, felt like the closest thing he'd ever get. As they reached the pub Nathan looked back, almost as if to check he hadnāt been abandoned once more. before pushing open the door and rushing to the bar top to order himself something, not waiting for Simon.
simon of course paid for the drinks, nathan getting himself rather drunk very quickly. almost as if wanting to drown out the reality that he; nathan young, was practically on a date with the same guy heād called a faggot many times. Simon was slow with his, only sipping it a few times as he watched Nathan order more and more, āyou drink like a girlā he teased wiping his mouth before drinking the last of his glass, Simon just looked away and sipped. He watched as others danced, did their own things. Others who seemed so much more happy than heād ever been, yet theyād never notice him. Nathan looked over at Simon, noticing his eyes following a group of dancing people. He scoffed and grinned, speaking once more his voice slurred and almost incoherent āyou perv! knew you were a panty snifferā he giggled looking at Simon's glass before taking it and finishing it off. Simon watched a small pout on his lips āI am not a pervert.ā he muttered, to which Nathan only grinned and leaned back. āWhat was that barry?ā simon let out a sigh and took his empty glass back, grasping it as he spoke āi said im not a pervert and my name isnāt barry, itās simonā he watched Nathan's face falter for a moment, and then spoke again, āiāve told you that, countless times. not even just me! Kelly told you that. I thought youād at least listen to her seeing as she can hear your thoughts and knows you like herā then he stood, letting go of the glass and walking. Nathan took a moment to process Simon's words in his drunk state. soon standing and following after him, muttering ābarryā under his breath. He stumbled out of the pub, using his hand to help himself stand straight against the door as he clutched the growing pain in his side. āBarry, wait!ā he called out, knowing Simon wasnāt too far. Simon looked back and sighed, his expression changing as he noticed Nathan struggle to stay standing. āwhat?ā he called out, his voice seemingly back to normal, Nathan let out a small smile and rolled his eyes teasingly at Simon. āI don't hate you or whatever you thinkā his face fell, suddenly looking ashamed as he spoke āand Kelly's alright, but iām not in love with herā his hand moved from his aching side, to wipe his face as he tried to sober himself a little more. Simon stood, watching as he waited for Nathan to finish his words. Sighing he leaned against the wall and looked up as he spoke once more, āi like you, but i donāt like that. and I'm scared of it?ā he coughs trying to stop his eyes from tearing as the mix of cold air and emotions hit him, āyouāre weird and, im supposed to be the ladies man, im supposed to be the one getting all the chicks and getting laid all the timeā Simon didnāt speak, just kept watching his face slightly confused yet he looked a tad nervous. Nathan rolled his eyes and groaned, "I can't be gay thatās not who i am? i donāt think thatās what i amā his eyes searched Simon's face, looking for anything that meant he was actually listening. āI'm shit at everything, I don't think anyone likes me. i mean fuck why would you? iām an arse to you, i want you to like me thoughā Simon sighed and looked away, his anger lost entirely. āI don't hate you, but I don't like you particularly eitherā he mumbled āi want to be your friend, we can be friendsā his words felt as though they burnt a hole into Nathan's chest, only in stating his pain more. His face turned red and he scoffed, āyeah thatās, thatās what i saidā he spoke trying his best not to sound disappointed. āiām not gayā his eyes met simonās once more. seeing the uncomfortable gaze that he was met with, he sighed and tried to lean off the wall, "I have to go home, i uh yeahā he smiled awkwardly stumbling off.
āSee you at community service tomorrowā Simon called out, his voice hoarse from confusion.
Yet Nathan only looked back, tears staining his face as he stumbled his way back to the place he called home.

FLUFF:
likes to call you pet names, but not necessarily sweet ones. like ācuntā or āarseholeā but truly means it in a funny sense.
Whenever heās drunk and has phone credit heāll call you, usually just to talk about nothing in general or tell you how much he loves you.
LOVES to play fight, especially if it ends in him winning.
when you first start dating (and I mean really early days) heās overly awkward, seeing as he doesn't have much experience in actually having a girlfriend.
whenever he can heāll offer to take you out on a date, however you always end up paying.
heās very open, but not about his feelings - often says when heās done something like taken a piss or burped.
tries his best to impress you, even if it means putting others down, - for example heāll pick on Simon to make himself seem more relevant.
When he eventually does get round to being more open about his feelings, heāll cry on your shoulder if it means he gets a kiss or hug.
after the first date, heāll ask to stay at yours - not to impose but to at least have a proper bed to sleep in.
after a few days, maybe a week heāll already have moved all of his things into your place, and with him usually means mess.
he wonāt tell you about his living situation, as heās too embarrassed about the fact heās homeless. and if you ever ask to go to his heāll make up an excuse.
He's a bad kisser, well not necessarily bad but he puts too much effort in to seem more experienced than he actually is.
loves when you play with his hair, and might even let you tie it up if you donāt pull too much.
he likes to tease, when i say likes i mean he loves to, whenever your moody, or upset heāll tease you for everything; usually putting it down to you being āon your time of the monthā or it just being your āgirly hormonesā
heāll always stick up for you, no matter if you're in the wrong.
When you first get to talking, he tries EVERYTHING to impress you, heāll do stupid stunts just to make you laugh. even if it means him getting hurt.
He's sceptical about telling you about the storm, but will eventually open up about it: before he found out about his own āpowerā heād often just complain of not having one. but if you started dating afterwards; heāll always bring it up and find a way to boast about it.
he likes being by your side, and always has since you met
the rest are NSFW!
SMUT:
he doesnāt usually try to sleep with you on the first date. the second? thatās a completely different story.
heās not great in bed, again the same with the kissing heās an over achiever, and tries too hard.
heās not great at aftercare: if youāre just hooking up he wonāt try;but when you do get together he will try - giving you praise afterward, even sometimes laying or falling asleep with you.
he likes to make out with you whenever he can, even if itās in public or at parties.
when you do finally āget togetherā heās not shy, and will boast about how good he looks (yes i think heās that vain)
definitely prefers breasts over ass, but loves both nonetheless.
most likely isnāt shaven, not because he prefers it but because of the fact he canāt afford to buy a razor, and has no way of using it.
heyy do you know where i can watch summer of the flying saucer?? <3
please dm me if youād like the link!! obviously donāt post it online on anywhere you can make a profit, itās not yours to do so with. however you may download it for yourself!! (as per the directors wishes)

Heād always been on the run, never stopping in one place for long stretches of time. never creating relationships with anyone. No friends, no family. no connections. and that was for the better. He'd always hated it; he felt so dirty, so wrong. So imperfect and utterly disgusting. and that was yet to change. As he leaned against the cracked brick walls of that same shitty pub heād first been to when he originally came to West Yorkshire. Heād met many people, seen the faces of the most important and less influential shits that the place had. He'd become quite the āpopularā boy. often having āprivate meetingsā with the heads of the local paper. But there was one person heād taken a liking to. He wasn't exactly the head of anything but worked for the local paper, the Yorkshire Post. Just like the others. But there was something different about him.
He pushed through the crowded pub, a few drinks spilling onto his shoes as he walked to him. tapping his spindly fingers over the manās shoulder to get his attention. And with a soft smile and look at his drink, the man excused himself, and they headed to the small bathroom of the pub. Though, he truly hated meeting in such dismal places for such things. Yet his growing interest in the man surpassed his disgust at his acts. It had been a few weeks since heād first been introduced to Barry, and ever since then heād enjoyed his job a little more. It didn't take a long while before they'd both grown close. Barry would often meet up with him to talk about things on his mind. And that was exactly how that very last night they spent together played out.
Heād been sitting in his room, making sure he looked okay before he was to head out. But before he could, he heard a hushed knock at the door, followed by three harder, more punctual ones. "BJ! Open the door!" Barry's voice called out in a panicked tone. He stood quickly, opening the door and smiling. It didn't take long for him to explain what was going on and why he had to leave. And that he was in danger. giving a small co-op bag that was bursting with envelopes before kissing his cheek and rushing out the door. He sat confused, unsure of what was going on. and that night would mark the last moment heād ever see Barry again.
The days seemed to go by slower than ever; he didnāt eat. barely slept anymore and never had the time to clean his place. let alone look in a mirror for longer than a few minutes.
The flat was a complete mess. Three broken plates scattered into pieces decorating the tattered carpets. An ashtray splayed out over the half-broken table. Two half-eaten plates of whatever heād made to eat the past few nights ago sat on his chair. He brushed a shaky hand through his orange-streaked hair, looking in the reflection of his small hand mirror. His eyes had never seemed so tired, yet the bags underneath told a different story. Pulling on his maroon blazer and grabbing the small co-op bag filled with Barry's important files. His lifeās work, which heād given him the night before it all happened. He couldnāt wrap his head around it. Barry said he was in danger, but surely it had to be those crazy old bitches' words getting to his head, right?
wrong. Everything had gone fucked up, and the fact he couldnāt even say goodbye to him properly before heād left made it all worse. He couldnāt shake the feeling that if heād just begged Barry once more, he couldāve saved his life. And if only things had gone that way, maybe heād be able to stop working how he did. He carefully stepped over his mess, pushing his front door open before slipping out. He had to give Barryās work to someone, that someone being Edward Dunford. Barry spoke well of Eddie, saying only great words that amused him. He knew a lot about the poor bloke, yet Eddie knew nothing of him, and he wished for it to stay that way. If people knew what he did, then theyād judge him like there was no tomorrow; theyād make his life a living hell. But of course a few did; words spread like fire. Barry had been called a āpuffā plenty of times, mainly for being seen with him; therefore, he thought they must have known. For one thing, heād been with a few of the Yorkshire posts before. The little fuckers never truly tried to show care for him, not like Barry did. He watched from the inside of his building, hovering by the phone as he waited for it to ring. After a few minutes it did; he picked up on the second ring, hands shaking as he pulled it to his ear. He heard the faint hushed voice of a man he could only hope was Eddie. "Mr Dunford?" he questioned, his eyes darting around him as he waited for an answer, his feet tapping on the dirty lobby floor. Once he got a reply back, he quickly told the man where to find him. Before hanging up and heading back to his flat.
It felt colder than before, still messy, but he didnāt care enough to clean up. For Eddie wasnāt there for āworkā; he was there for Barry, to get what little was left of his life. He sat on his bed, trying to hold back the last of his tears as he clutched the bag of Barry's things. He felt so lucky he was the last man to see him but at the same time felt guilt grasping him by the collar with each breath he took. He didnāt dare to look through the various envelopes of things; he knew it was all too much for his already fragile eyes. What Barry had said already was enough to bring the bile from his stomach up to his throat; heād always wanted to listen to Barry, and heād always tried to. But what he told him was all too much to take in at once. How could anyone do such things, and to such innocent people? He heard the door handle and jolted at the noise, wiping his cheeks and forcing a smile upon his lips.
He watched as a dishevelled man walked in, cigarette in his lips and a black eye. He said nothing but stood awkwardly. His eyes were red, presumably from the black eye that painted one side of his handsome face; he coughed softly before speaking, āYou wanted to talk about Barry? Barry Gannon?ā The boy nodded, orange strands of his curls bouncing softly. āYes,ā he mumbled, sniffling as he held up a bag. āHis lifeās work ā he wanted you to have it, in case anything happened. Barry spoke good words about you.ā Dunford took the bag, opening it to see a vast collection of manila envelopes; his fingers grazed over the tear-stained paper, and he gave a small nod along with a smile following the boy's words. He sat on a dusty chair, pushing off a plate and looking at the boy. in case anything happened? Dunford thought to himself.
He looked back, his eyes glazed over with fresh tears. āMy nameās Barry, but people call me BJ,ā he muttered, remembering the hundreds of times heād been called that stupid name. remembering what it meant and why he was called it. All those years of his life ruined by meaningless actions. Dunford nodded slowly, looking at the messy room as he spoke. āHowād you know Gannon?ā His eyes met the boy's tired gaze. He scoffed softly, rolling his eyes as he looked at Dunford. "I know people," he started, standing up and walking closer, his face slightly puffy from his earlier crying. āIāve sucked the cocks and licked the balls of some of the greatest men in this country.ā His voice was tinged with a sour note; he wasnāt mad. No, he was angry. Out of all people, Dunford should have known something? Barry always talked about him, said Dunford was good, said he did, and said he knew things. āHe liked you, Barry did,ā he mumbled, watching as the man raised his eyebrow, lips twinging a little at the pressure on his black eye. Dunford leaned forward, pushing the boy back into his bed. āI saw you at the funeral, didnāt I?ā His words came out roughly.
He stuttered slightly, looking away and then back at Dunford. āListen to me, BJ loved Barry, really loved him.ā His voice cracked with each word, his face clear with fear and his eyes red with tears as he tried not to break under the pressure. āBut he was too fucking scared to go to his funeral.ā Dunford pulled at the boy's shirt, ripping off a few strands of the fabric before tilting his head back in frustration. āWhat did he tell you?ā He groaned, clutching the bag in his hand, letting the boy fall back against the bed. āWhat did Barry fucking tell you?ā The boy sighed softly, shaking his head as he saw the anger rise in Dunford's face. "He didnāt tell me anything; he said he was going to Morley," he mumbled, looking at the dirt underneath his fingernails. āHe said he needed to see someone, you know.ā
one cold slap across his face, before Dunford grabbed at the collar of his shirt. He could feel the warmth of his breath on his cheek and smell the alcohol on his breath. and it scared him shitless. āWhat the fuck does that mean?ā Dunford shouted, his voice blaring in the poor boy's ear. The boy shook his head, trying to push away, his hands shaking as he pulled Dunford off him. āHe said it was about that girl. I told you itās all inside that bag.ā His eyes closed tightly for a second, then opened as he heard his door shut. And then Dunford was gone. But he knew that Dunford would call again and have questions about what was inside that bag. questions he had no answer to.
It had been a tough night; his mind kept thinking back to the last time heād seen Barry, how he in fact was the last person to see him. His mind was screaming at him, telling him he definitely could have stopped him. That night felt like years; he couldnāt sleep and could barely breathe over the tears that stained his cheeks. When the sun began to shine through his sheer curtains, he groaned, rolling over and looking at his shithole of a place that he called his āhomeā. He sat up, still wearing those same clothes from the past two previous nights, and stumbled over to his small fridge, grabbing a half bottle of water and taking a sip. It wasn't cold nor hot. but lukewarm and had the taste of old water that made his already sore throat burn. On top of that very same fridge was a small notebook, and to his unsurprise, it was Barry's. At the mere sight of his handwriting, he paused, looking at how perfectly he wrote his words, the little loops he added on the letter āOā and how heād often scribble out his words. Through tears and anger, he tore off the page, throwing it onto the floor before he heard his phone ring.
twenty minutes later, and a quick wash in the menās bathroom. He headed out to meet his usual clientele. Even after such a hard loss, he had to make a living; he had to keep going. As much as he hated his job, it was the only thing he knew he was good at; if he hadnāt done what he did, heād never have met Barry. Each minute felt longer than ever, hiding down that same alley, offering himself up to anyone whoād pass by. Quick pushes into the grimy pub bathroom, a five-pound note and a dirty look before being left to kneel on the shit-stained floor. Each person getting what they wanted, but never him. He'd never have that again, not now. By the time the pub began to fill, heād earned around twenty pounds for himself. He headed inside, stealing someoneās half pint before introducing himself around in search of a few more notes before he went home. the same thing heād done each night before and each night after heād met Barry. Except something felt different; he felt so hollow. like he was living in a shell of his former self. He wasnāt Barry James Anderson anymore; he wasnāt even BJ.
He headed through the dark streets to his flat, pushing open the door and taking in the stale smell of his dishevelled room. It still seemed cold; heād never been one to complain about temperature control. But without that warmth of Barry, it didnāt feel right. He sat on the edge of his unmade bed, counting the little money heād made from tonight, before leaving it on the small bedside table. and leaning back against his bed. He couldn't help but cry; the truth about everything was still so raw. Losing Barry, and losing the one person that was kind, the one person that cared. And now it would just be him. He tried to remember all he could of the night he last saw Barry, how heād rushed through the door in a panic, putting the bag down on the bed and kissing him once. He then sat there and told him as much as he could, as much as Barry could get out without making himself sick.
His bed still had the faint smell of smoke that followed Barry around; he pressed his face against the soft fabric. wiping his eyes before sitting up. He stared blankly at his wall. The poster of Bowie is starting to peel, threatening to fall off at any moment. But he didnāt care. As he always said, āBJ is as BJ does,ā and at that moment, he didnāt want to do anything anymore. Nothing mattered. Every day was always the same anyway, so why would it matter if he wasnāt there? Heād only live each day as a repeat of the last. He came home covered by dirt, bruises from unlawful acts he had no choice but to do for a living and the scent of piss covering his clothes. three five-pound notes, two in his name, and a couple of dirty tissues stuffed into his back pocket.
As he sat there, his mind thought back to a few weeks ago. Remembering that during his usual routine of meeting with his āclientsā, he'd been given a bag of pills as a payment instead of the actually useful five pounds that he had always charged. He wasn't really the type to take pills. However, he knew what they could do if he wanted them to. He searched his blazer pocket, finding the small bag of pills and holding it to his face, his fingers slipping slightly from his sweat as he contemplated opening the very bag. He waited a moment, looking at the poster once more, then at the bag, before ripping it open and pouring them into his mouth. He gagged at the texture, powder coating his throat and tongue as he swallowed. His throat burnt at the sensation of the pills cascading down. He grabbed the little water he had left in that bottle from this morning and drank it. Lying back on his bed, eyes closing and his head spinning slightly. He felt his stomach churn, tasting that foul bile flavour staining his throat as it rose to his mouth. He sighed softly, rubbing his temples as he tried to brush off the feeling of sickness that began to take over his body.
It didnāt take long for him to fall asleep this timeā¦and it wouldnāt take long for anything anymore.
Iām sorry itās not long and, oh my god Iām sorry if itās dark??
