incorrect. dnd designers bill the game as being built around 3 pillars of adventuring. 3, not 1. it’s not wrong to point out that disproportionate attention is paid, through the mechanics and the design of the game, to only 1 out of the 3 pillars. plenty of people know this is a flaw in the dnd system (yes, even 5e) which is why so many people say “it’s time to play another game/stop playing dnd.” if this is truly how the game is meant to be played they shouldn’t say there are 3 pillars. you would never say “just use your imagination” for combat. there’s nothing wrong with demanding clearer, funner rules and more thoughtful design around the other 2 pillars.

Pride 2020

Fuck yeah, Pride is cancelled! All the big corporate events are going to be replaced with empty hashtags and just as many rainbow advertisements on social media. Which is fine by me. I’m not going to miss ANY of those fucking parades. For a long time now, Pride has not been for us, about us or by us. It has been an advertising spectacle that allows racists and ableists and transphobes to march under their banner but pushed out marginalized queers claiming their space. Let that ‘Pride’ end. Good riddance.

This seems like the perfect year to make Pride our own again, in a thousand different ways. From smashed windows of conservative offices, to beautiful queer graffiti, to live-streaming benefit concerts to support sex workers. Take to the streets alone, in couples or in affinity groups or in massive networks of little groups. Put in the world your rage, your desire, your visions of the future, your defiant existence in the present. Make a target of every billboard that still tries to tarnish our day for profit. Make a comrade out of every marginalized queer that could use a helping hand. Let’s make it direct, make it radical and make it queer.

- Maybe badly? More interconnected communities have 1000s of advantages but they are not very good at isolation and quarantine. The nuclear home that capitalism relies upon to atomize us doesn’t fit in an anarchist future, so we’re going to have to find ways to deal with that.

- Maybe better than you expect? Capitalism makes us sick.  Our society structurally undermines our immune system. Imagine how much more resistant our bodies would be without malnutrition, pollution, subpar products, stress, shitty working conditions all undermining our well being our entire life.

- By dying. Let’s face it. We don’t have a magic fix for human vulnerability and even with much greater general well being and a global network of scientists cooperating without competition and sharing information freely, we will still be vulnerable and we will still die. We can do what we can but we won’t eradicate decease forever. We don’t set up realistic goals for ourselves when we pretend otherwise. We’re making bad propaganda when we pretend our utopia can fix the fundamental uncertainty of being an organic being.

- Better than capitalism and the state would. Always. Without a doubt. Because there is no way a society that prioritized quality of life over profit and control could be doing worse than this dystopia.

Aye. That last point is basically how I usually respond to those kinds of questions. I genuinely have no idea how a communist society would handle this or any other major challenge - but I do know that our collective approach to the problem, the concerns and priorities that inform it, and the capacity for people to actively contribute to the process would be utterly transformed.

I always have a problem with the premise of questions like that though, because they imply the existence of a generally applicable anarchist policy which really doesn’t and can’t exist. It’s a kind of category error arising from the dominant way of thinking about problems and solutions in our society, anarchism is not that sort of proposition. For me this is such an important difference between the anarchist and the functionally social democratic approach in general, and why the latter is the more ‘utopian’ in the derogatory sense. 

I mean, sure we could spend time figuring out exactly how a ‘good’ society would do X,Y and Z, it’s not an inherently bad thought experiment - but if we acknowledge that all capitalist, state based responses to problems of this kind will always fail most people, and that we don’t currently have the capacity to respond autonomously from those structures… then solutions on paper are either a meaningless fantasy or an unacceptable compromise, doesn’t matter how clever they are.

Gateless Background

As a Gateless, your anti-Guild organizing doesn’t make you very popular with members of the Guilds and you’re used to fleeing Boros soldiers and Orzhov enforcers. You know how to blend in with a crowd, which alleyways are safe, and which shopkeepers will let you use the back door.

You’re also very much aware of the history of the Guildpacts and the millennia of oppression the Guilds have forced upon the unguilded. You can, of the top of your head, mention several attempted revolts and revolutions, as well as the various ways in which the Guilds have harmed people like you.

Tool proficiency: One type of artisan’s tool

You still need to put food on your plate and you’d hate to be reliant on the “food” the Golgari distribute, charity from the Conclave, or “charity” from the Church of Deals. This means working for a living. Maybe you own a shop, maybe you’re in someone’s employ. Either way, you contribute to the Ravnican economy.

Equipment: A set of artisan’s tools (one of your choice), a set of common clothes, a pamflet denouncing the Guilds, and a belt pouch containing 10 gp.

Feature: Mutual Aid

As a member of the rebellious organization, you can rely on help from your comrades for a variety of things. Just as your conspirators come to you for assistance of all kinds, you can reach out to other members of Gateless groups in times of need.

You can spend your time calling on your allies for a variety of benefits. Work with your Dungeon Master to decide how much time is appropriate and whether or not your network can actually provide an item, information, or assistance.

Calling upon your comrades in this way isn’t without risk and doing so risks harming you, them, or the entire Gateless movement. Even if your request is successful, your Dungeon Master might decide it leads to future complications.
