If I ever do write another Simon Snow book, I'm doing it for the 50 or so people on Tumblr who have been cracking me up and making me feel heard for the last ten years.
Like, other people can read it, sure. But they will be extraneous.

baz pitch really is such a funny character if you think about it. if you take away all of his and simon's musings about how he's an Evil Plotting Vampire and look at it from an outsider's perspective, he's really just some guy. like all he does is walk around campus, he has 1 friend (the other is his cousin so he doesn't count), and he LIKES to do homework ahead of material studied in class. he's literally just some random 18 year old nerd
Learning about how Niamh sees Baz from her point of view was the most hilarious thing that happened in the trilogy because she simply could not be more unbothered by Baz’s existence. Everyone else thinks he’s so cool and so smart and such a good mage. But Niamh is like. Basilton Pitch? Who is that? Who is he? It’s HILARIOUS. Simon is so fully obsessed with every little thing Baz does but nobody else cares about him the way he does.
Every single time I remember that the first time we finally hear Baz say that he loves Simon was during their break-up it ruins my whole day. Mood ruined. Day ruined. Week ruined. Rainbow really chose the most diabolical choice. IT WAS DIABOLICAL. Unhinged in so many ways.
This may be a hot take but this is a rough outline of my Simon Snow Trilogy rankings. I already know that I’m probably choosing chaos. This is NOT my analytical essay - what I’m writing here are my preliminary thoughts.
Best book as a whole - Carry On
Best-written book - Wayward Son
Best Book for Simon and Baz’s relationship - Any Way The Wind Blows
Some people may be wondering why I think that WS is the best-written book in the series. There is something about the way that this book is written that makes it stand apart from its siblings. It’s heartbreakingly raw and devastating but melancholic and cathartic. This book has so many fantastic quotes that encapsulate what makes this entire series and these characters so extremely special to me. This book makes these characters leap off the page and makes them feel like real people. It’s so rare for me to come across books that evoke the same feelings. This book belongs to Simon and Agatha. They are the shining stars of this book and I think this is where we get the most of their character development that underpins their arcs in Any Way The Wind Blows.
This is obviously the most angst-ridden book in the series but I think that’s a cornerstone of why it’s so good. Those who agree with me will understand what I mean and what I’m trying to say. WS is devastatingly tragic but it’s overflowing with tenderness. Everyone in this book is a mess at one point or another. Everyone in this book is trying to cope with their own struggles. This is a story of catharsis and acceptance. Of coping under the weight of traumatic experiences.
This is probably going to be an extra-special hot take but WS Simon is probably the version of Simon that I enjoy re-reading the most. I really like how Rainbow wrote this part of his arc. She’s simply a wizard at writing angst and I think this book has so many special qualities. Simon is - obviously - at his worst during WS. He’s coming to terms with losing his magic and what that means for his future. He’s struggling with coming to terms with his love for Baz. WS-Simon is the most relatable Simon - in my eyes. Struggling with intimacy and vulnerability are two things that have impacted me in many personal ways. I could really resonate with some parts of Simon’s character. Being afraid of opening up. Being afraid of showing someone else the darkest parts of ourselves. I don’t have a romantic partner but I do struggle with trust issues and being intimate with other people. It feels so deeply and intrinsically uncomfortable to reconcile with the parts of myself that I don’t want to show anyone or even discuss out-loud. I have a very, very special place in my heart for WS-era Simon even though it’s a very dark part of his overall story. I could really resonate with some of Simon’s struggles and this book made me adore and love him more than I already did. Which is to an insane degree. Simon Snow will always have a piece of my heart and I’ll always carry his stories with me.
This book series is in my soul. It penetrates to a very deep and very personal part of me. It did since the very first day that I read it during the February of 2016. I wish I could explain why that is. It’s just a combination of everything that it has to offer - the compelling character backstories. The depth of the overlapping stories. The romance. The mystery and magic. The fantastic and wonderful characters. SIR TYRANNUS BASILTON GRIMM-PITCH. Agatha Wellbelove🥹 Penny🥹 SHEPARD LOVE. Simon Snow🥹😢🥺
Rainbow Rowell truly understands how to write loveable and phenomenal characters with so much depth and such strong personalities. Her characters feel like real people with actual identities. This book series makes me understand the joy of reading and the true power that authors can possess. When a book hits - it hits. Everyone has that one series or that one book that has stuck to them through life like glue. This series is that series for me. It has followed me through life for nearly a decade now. This story is one that may not be for everyone but it made its way into my heart and it’s in my bones. I couldn’t be more grateful for this series.
This is it for now🥹 I don’t want to keep rambling for ages and ages.
One of these days I will finally write a full-length explanatory and analytical essay about the Simon Snow Trilogy and my rankings of all three books. One day it will finally happen. I’m manifesting that I will finally stop procrastinating this.
Happy birthday Chosen One🎉✨✨
My Favourite. Forever & Always🥹🥳🥺
All quotes are from Wayward Son because yesterday @rainbowrowell said no one says "I love you" in this book. I'd argue there is more than one way to say I love you and that Wayward Son is, in fact, full of I love yous (which is why I love it so much!)
Happy birthday, angel. May you never forget how precious you are ❤️
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I will ever be capable of properly articulating and expressing how deeply important and meaningful this series is to me. It’s one of the most beautiful love stories.
Happy Birthday, Simon Snow!

Happy Birthday Simon🥳 He’s truly one of my forever favourites.
In a fit of frustration, Simon spells Baz to have more empathy towards him. So Baz starts feeling whatever Simon's feeling. And he realizes what Simon feels for him doesn't feel much like hate, but in fact feels kind of familiar.
New Carry On prompt!
WHO WILL BE THE HERO WE NEED????
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 I can’t explain how much I need this.
i miss snowbaz !!!
Every day. Forever & Always😞😢😩
important question!!!!! what's your favorite carry on quote/phrase? something short that would fit on a bracelet :))
“You were the sun and I was crashing into you.”
“I’d lost my mother, and my soul, and the Crucible gave me you.”
“I’d give him all that I am. I’d give him all that I was. I’d open up a vein. I’d tie our hearts together, chamber by chamber.”
“You were the centre of my universe. Everything else spun around you.”
“You can’t just give up on this. On me. Don’t you know what we have? It’s the sort of thing people dream about. They make potions to steal it.”
“We’re not made of pieces that come apart.”
“Because we match.”
“Go on, then. Carry on, Simon.”
“Some lives we squander. And some we seize.”
YIKES. THIS WAS SO HARD. These books have so many wonderfully flawless quotes. I could’ve kept going but I don’t want this post to be the length of three essays.
The awaited Chapter 61 of CO Spanish Edition
JESUS CHRIST. Most of the chapter is translated to have the same meaning, but it does change a few things. Simon is lovely but Baz is still the most romantic
First of all, I never understood this phrase:
You’re so alive, Simon Snow. You got my share of it.
Seeing that English isn't my first language, I never got the meaning of it, not even after people explaining it to me. Well... FUCK THAT. Spanish grabs that phrase and makes it EXPLICITLY ROMANTIC:
"Están tan lleno de vida, Simon Snow. La mía ya es tuya".
FUCK ME, BAZ. JESUS CHRIST. TELL ME THAT'S NOT THE BEST TRANSLATION EVER.
"You're so full of life, mine is already yours" ?????????
ISN'T THAT SUCH A BEAUTIFUL THING TO HAVE IN YOUR MIND??
Even as Baz was ready to die, he kept guarding Simon's safety and he was so dramatic and lovely about it!!!!
2. The "And then he kisses me" is translated as:
"Y, entonces, el que me besa es él".
BEAUTIFUL, GORGEOUS, HEARTBREAKING, STUNNING.
That phrase is technically translated to English as:
"And, then, the one who's kissing me is him".
So you can all understand why I'm dying.
I love how it sounds so much like a TALE, like he's telling you a story and this is the happy ending of it, like all we've read is the preparation for this moment. Everything has been built up for this kiss. Baz's yearning, Simon's obsession, their rivalry turning into a truce... Jesus.
The punctuation and phrasing is POETIC, to say the least.
That first "Y" is going to kill me. Because it's the end of Baz's thoughts, so it's the end of his story, the beginning of his Desire, the culmination of his yearning, of his desperation (let's not forget he's desperately in love with Simon, in Spanish). So, when he starts his ending with an "Y" it's the equivalent of "And they lived happily ever after". JESUS, BAZ, YOU PINING FOOL.
Second, the punctuation between the, "entonces", IS SO DRAMATIC AND YET SO NECESSARY. It's making a pause for the reader, and Baz himself, to be able to prepare to what's coming. We're bracing ourselves for a big punch, for the biggest reveal, for what Baz's destiny will have for him. And it's a kiss. It's finally what Baz (and us) have been waiting for.
There's a lot of foreshadowing during the first moments of that Chapter, about the kiss, because Baz had never been so open and obsessive about wanting to kiss Simon, but here, he's letting himself go, he's letting you know he wants to kiss exclusively Simon and that he's never done it. Being 2015, a guy admitting that would have broken minds, so he's telling us and he gets the kiss.
He gets it after giving us a mystery, a pause for us to breathe and prepare ourselves for the reveal.
And I like the connotation of "the one who kisses me" a lot. Because it's not only Simon changing the course of the narrative and Baz's life, but it's also such a beautiful moment. Baz revealed he hadn't kissed anyone, but we also know that no one has wanted to kiss kim. Baz is a yearner, but he doesn't even let himself think of himself as someone kissable, so phrasing that kiss as "the one who kisses me", as "the one who desires me", or "the one who gets to do it, because I'm letting it, because I'm willing it, because I want it is HIM".
AND HIM IS IN ITALICS. Beautiful. Gorgeous.
3. When Baz thinks "I'm living a charmed life", it gets translated as:
"Estoy viviendo un cuento de hadas".
Which only reinforces my thoughts of how Baz presenting their kiss, their first, is perceived as a story, as a tale getting told. Baz thinks so. He's living his fantasy, his very own fairytale. Good for him!
4. Simon talking about the kiss is very alike the English version, HOWEVER.
"I like him like this. Under my thumb. Under my hands."
I bring you this:
"Así es como me gusta tenerlo. Bajo mi poder. Entre mis manos"
THESE BOYS ARE KILLING ME. Because it's so Simon and so THEM. This is how it's translated back to English:
"This is how I like having him. Under my power. Between my hands."
DO YOU UNDERSTAND HOW ROMANTIC THAT IS??????
SIMON WANTING TO HOLD BAZ BETWEEN HIS HANDS. Not under, NO, he's not restraining Baz, he's not pushing him down his thumb, he's not putting him down, he's holding him BETWEEN his hands. When you have someone between your hands, you're able to look at them, you're able to keep them safe, to stare, to make sure they're alright, to caress and brush their cheeks. You're able to kiss, to love.
And I like that Simon talks about his power, because he's always been afraid of it, afraid of his magic and what it can do. At the beginning, he tells us he loves magic, but not his. He's hurt people with it and he can't contain it, he truly believes it can do no right. But Baz has been able to handle Simon's magic, Simon's power, he's been able to save when Simon could have hurt (the dragon), he's been able to help Simon control it, he's helped him realize what a beautiful thing Simon's magic (and Simon himself) can be. He can bring stars, heal, protect, and Baz being able to handle Simon's power has helped Simon love his own magic. Simon makes these god's displays of magic every time he can by closing the distance between him and Baz because he's more comfortable with it, because now he knows he can use it, because Simon is no longer afraid of it. And now having Baz under his power, where Baz can access to it to create beautiful things, to save lives, of course Simon wants Baz to be exactly between his hands, where things are better for Simon, and therefore for Baz.
Carry On in Spanish is truly a beauty. It has its cons and its pros, but getting to read their first kiss in my first, native language is something unforgettable. I'm so glad I'm lucky enough to experience this 😭🙏🏻
Do I understand Spanish? No. Do I know the language? No. Have I ever spoke a word of Spanish in my life? Not since 2016 when I was in my Grade 10 Spanish class. But has that stopped my brain from latching onto the Spanish translation and holding onto it with an absurd amount of strength? Absolutely not. The Spanish translation of Chapter 61 is quite literally my Roman Empire. I think about it all the time and every time I do it shatters me.

“This is what I deserve,” he says.
I shake my head. “Well, it isn’t what I deserve.”
What I love about Baz saying, “I grew up at the top of a tower … with you,” is how it reiterates that all of what Baz is, all of who he’s become, is because of Simon. And maybe that’s not entirely true, but that’s how Baz feels. So when Simon looks at Baz and sees someone who is too good for Simon, this Baz who’s blooming right before his eyes, Baz knows it’s only because he has Simon beside him. Simon wants to set Baz free but the only reason Baz can fly is because of how he’s tethered to Simon.
I don’t think this is something Simon ever really understands, by the way. It’s not the revelation that makes him come back. But then again … maybe most of us never get there. We don’t see the impact we make on other people. Sometimes it’s enough to hold on because we like the view.
Got Simon and Baz on the brain.
