When Kwei arrives home the first thing he hears is not your voice.
It is the unmistakable patter of tiny feet racing across the wooden floor.
He has barely pushed the front door open before something very small throws itself against his leg with all the force a three-year-old can manage.
โFather!โ
His hand, still holding the leather strap of his hunting pack, immediately lets go. The pack lands on the floor with a heavy thud, forgotten before it even touches the ground.
Kwei looks down. His little daughter is wrapped around his leg, her tiny arms barely meeting around it, her eyes shining as though she had not seen him in months instead of two days.
โThere you are,โ he says quietly, she tips her head back until she can look at him.
โYou came back.โ
โI did.โ
โLike you promised.โ
โI keep my promises.โ
Satisfied, she nods once, then she lifts both arms as high as they go.
โUp.โ
There is no hesitation.
Kwei bends immediately, slipping one large hand under her before lifting her against his chest. She settles there as if she has always belonged in that exact spot. Because, in many ways, she has.
From the doorway, you watch the entire exchange with a smile tugging at your lips.
โYou didnโt even take your armour off.โ
Kwei glances at you.
โIt can wait, she is more important.โ
His daughter has already tucked her face under his mandible, one tiny hand absentmindedly playing with one of his dreadlocks. She sighs happily.
โYou smell like outside.โ
โI do.โ
โAnd snow.โ
โThere is snow.โ
โAnd trees.โ
โThere are trees.โ
She thinks very hard before adding, โโฆand Father.โ
A chuckle rumbles deep in Kweiโs chest.
โYes.โ
You shake your head, unable to hide your amusement.
โI carried her for months.โ
He looks at you with complete seriousness.
โYou did.โ
โI gave birth to her.โ
โYou did.โ
โI feed her every day.โ
โYou do.โ
You fold your arms.
โAnd yet she hears the door open and suddenly I no longer exist.โ
Kwei looks down at the little girl clinging happily to him.
โI fail to see the problem.โ
โOh, of course.โ
Your eldest is outside training with Dek, your youngest has fallen asleep after wearing himself out chasing insects around the garden, and your daughter has decided that her father is not allowed to move more than a few steps away from her.
Kwei sits outside the house repairing the shaft of one of his spears, a task that usually demands complete concentration.
Today, he has considerably less. Tiny footsteps approach again.
He does not need to look up. He already knows who it is.ย
She stops beside him, carrying a small wooden cup in both hands, her tongue poking out slightly with the effort of keeping it level.
She holds it up proudly.
โFor Father.โ
Kwei sets the spear aside immediately.
โWhat is this?โ
โTea.โ
You glance through the open doorway just in time to see him accept the cup with all the solemnity of receiving a ceremonial offering.
Inside is little more than cold water with a handful of leaves floating lazily on the surface.
Your daughter watches him happily. Kwei lifts the cup and takes a long drink, then lowers it again. He nods once, approving.
โExcellent.โ
Her entire face lights up.
โI made it!โ
โI can tell.โ
โYou like it?โ
โI do.โ
She smiled so brightly that you had to bite the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from laughing, when she runs off again to gather more โingredients,โ you step outside.
โSo?โ
Kwei hands you the cup. You look inside.
โโฆKwei.โ
โHm?โ
โThatโs a leaf.โ
โI noticed.โ
โAndโฆโ You poke gently at something floating near the bottom. โโฆI think thatโs moss.โ
โIt is.โ
โYou drank it.โ
He looks genuinely confused.
โShe made it.โ
โAs pretend tea.โ
โI know.โ
โโฆYou werenโt actually supposed to drink it.โ
โShe seemed pleased.โ
You laugh, resting your head on his shoulder.
โYou are impossible.โ
โNo.โ He watches your daughter proudly collecting more weeds from the edge of the garden. โI am her customer.โ
A few days later, Dek came over for a visit.
He found Kwei sitting on the floor of the house instead of sharpening weapons or preparing for a hunt.
This alone surprises him.
What surprises him more is what Kwei is doing.
Or ratherโฆ what he is allowing.
Your daughter sits behind him with the fiercest expression imaginable, surrounded by colourful beads, bits of leather cord and tiny flowers she insisted on picking that morning.
โStay still,โ she says very seriously.
โI am.โ
โNo moving.โ
โI have not moved.โ
Dek blinks, Kwei, one of the most feared hunters in the clan, sits perfectly upright while a toddler struggles to braid one of his dreadlocks.
It isโฆ Not going well.
The braid is uneven. The beads are completely mismatched.
One flower somehow ends up tied near the end of another dreadlock for no apparent reason.
Stillโฆ
Kwei does not move.
Nearly an hour passes before she finally climbs around to look at her work.
She places both tiny hands on her hips. Satisfied.
โThere.โ
Kwei reaches up carefully, feeling the collection of flowers and beads now decorating his hair.
โYou have finished?โ
She nods enthusiastically.
โYou handsome.โ
He inclines his head.
โThank you.โ
Dek cannot hold it in any longer.
He laughs. Loud enough that both of you look over.
โKwei.โ
โHm?โ
โYou once told me taking a mate would make you soft.โ
โI did.โ
โYou claimed children would distract you.โ
โI did.โ
Dek gestures toward him.
โYou have flowers in your hair.โ
Kwei reaches up again, gently touching one of the tiny flowers your daughter had carefully tied into place.
He smiles, just enough for the people who know him best to notice.
โYes.โ
Dek waits.
Surely there is more.
There is not.
โโฆYou are not taking them out?โ
โNo.โ
โWhy?โ
Kwei glances toward his daughter, who is now trying very hard to braid one of your youngest sonโs curls while he giggles uncontrollably.
โShe was proud of her work.โ
Dek shakes his head in disbelief.
โYou really are completely wrapped around her little finger.โ
Kwei does not even attempt to deny it.
โIf she asks for my timeโฆโ His gaze remains fixed on his daughter. โโฆshe shall have it.โ
โIf she asks you to wear flowers?โ
โI will.โ
โIf she asks you to attend tea?โ
โI will.โ
โIf she asks you to sit still for another hour?โ
โI will.โ
Dek sighs dramatically before looking at you.
โThere is no saving him.โ
โI know.โ you smile at Dek.
The sound draws your daughterโs attention. She runs across the room, stopping in front of Kwei before lifting both arms again.
โUp.โ
Without a single complaint, Kwei leans down and lifts her into his arms.
She immediately curls against his chest with a happy sigh, one little hand resting against his shoulder.
You walk over and brush one of the crooked flowers back into place among his dreadlocks.
โIt suits you.โ
โSo I have been told.โ
You smile.
โIt does.โ
Your daughter reaches out toward you then, patting the space between the two of them.
โMother.โ
You lean closer, she wraps one arm around your neck while remaining securely tucked against Kwei, insisting on holding both of you at once.
For a moment, the three of you simply stay like that. Your forehead resting lightly against Kweiโs. Your daughter happily sandwiched between you.
Warm.
Safe.
Loved.
Across the room, Dek watches the quiet scene unfold before quietly shaking his head with a smile.
The strongest warrior in the clan stood perfectly happy wearing crooked flowers in his dreadlocks, smelling faintly of moss tea, while a tiny little girl held his heart so completely that all she had to do was lift her arms and ask to be carried.
And Kwei knew, without the slightest doubt, that this was the greatest honour he had ever been given.

Leon and you have 3 daughters, ages 10 (Charlotte), 6 (Eleanor), and 2 (Alice). They're Leon's world and he wouldn't have it any other way.
Leon never thought he would be a dad, but he wouldn't have it any other way. He loves having his daughters with him. A lot of the time when he comes home from work and you kick him and the girls out of the kitchen to make dinner, you find them curled up on the couch with Leon, watching a movie. Charlotte and Eleanor on either side of him and Alice in his lap.
Leon sees a lot of himself in your oldest and sometimes that scares him. Charlie wants to help, she has a strong sense of justice, and wants to protect the people she cares about, but he hopes she doesn't follow in his footsteps. Ellie is more like you, and your youngest is so full of love and energy, she loves to play outside and dig in the dirt. She has a little car that she loves to ride around in and is obsessed with it.
All of them have his blue eyes and his smile. It's the sweetest, especially when you take family pictures.
Waking up in the morning to find that Alice had crawled into your bed in the middle of the night, wedging herself between you and Leon, drooling on your pillows and hogging all the blankets.
Leon seeing Alice asleep and taking her onto his chest while you leaned on his shoulder, having a quiet morning while your older two girls sleep.
Leon spends a lot of time teaching them how to defend themselves, even from a young age, so much so that it feels a little overkill sometimes. He was the one that got to deal with the school when your oldest punched a boy in the face after he kept pulling on her hair and her shirt.
It was a solid punch, and you were both proud of Charlotte for standing up for herself. You both pretended to be mad to appease the principal and the other child's parents, and took your kids to get ice cream after.
Leon makes time for the two of you and you still have date night. You get a babysitter, or the kids go stay with your parents, or a family friend, and you get the house to yourselves for the night or you go out. Date night is something both of you hold very dear.
Leon keeps a picture of you and your daughters in his wallet and looks at it when he misses you or when he is having a hard day. It reminds him what he is fighting for, it gave him purpose after all the shit he's dealt with.
You have found Leon in his home office doing work on his computer while Alice naps on his chest multiple times. You can always tell because he only has a lamp on in the office and he'll hum while he works to help sooth her.
Doesn't quite understand ballet, but is still supportive of Charlotte and her dream to be a ballerina someday. He drives her to dance class every week. He takes Ellie to tee ball every week, and that's something he understands more. He volunteers to bring snacks to her practice a lot.
They have him wrapped around their fingers. "Daddy can we get a puppy?" They will be getting a puppy for Christmas. "Daddy can we go to the park?" The car is already packed. Ice cream? He takes them to get ice cream every Sunday afternoon because he cherishes every moment he gets to spend with them.
Leon's friends were still shocked by how much fatherhood changed him. He was a little jaded when he was with his friends, still confident, still quick witted, still the same sense of humor, but still so guarded. The old Leon came out when he saw you and your daughters. His smile would reach his eyes, he was soft and sweet, like the rookie cop he'd been some 15 years ago. All his walls came crumbling down for his family.
Protective dad. The most protective dad. Drives safer with your daughters in the car. Security system in the house. That puppy for Christmas? A Malinois he had trained to be a guard dog. His name is Goose.
Devoted husband and father Leon who still has his own issues and hard days. Days where everything weighs heavy on his mind, where he wants to disappear, his depression getting to him somedays. He'd seen a lot of things no one should ever have to see or experience and somedays it became a lot to carry.
Those were the days that Leon went out driving alone after dinner, whether it be in his car or on his motorcycle, the days where he'd come home and you'd find him with a glass of whiskey or a beer out on the porch, petting Goose. Those were the nights you knew that he slept restlessly no matter how you tried to help him, no matter how long you talked.
Leon confiding in you about his fears about failing as a father, even though you know he loves your girls too much to ever fail them. Leon protecting his family from the horror he deals with on a daily basis because he wants the world to be a better place for his daughters.

An acclaimed and respected actor, Sam starred in almost one hundred films including My Brilliant Career (1979), Dead Calm (1989), Jurassic Park (1993), The Piano (1993), The Horse Whisperer (1998), Bicentennial Man (1999), Jurassic World III (2001), Thor Ragnarok (2017), Jurassic World Dominion (2022), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022). His television credits were also extensive and included The Tudors (2007), Peaky Binders (2013-2014), and voice acting roles in The Simpsons (1994) and Rick and Morty (2019).
