Wait what's a buildings fire evacuation plan if you aren't supposed to use the elevator to get down
You go down the stairwell/fire escape. Is that weird?
But what if you have a walker or a wheelchair??
in america at least, in this situation, there isnt one. either your loved ones or the firemen can get you out using the emergency fire escapes or stairs, or you dieĀ
That's fucking horrific, thank you
āfunā little story:
last summer my friend who is an amazingly talented artist and i were in this super tall building, and sheās in a wheelchair and iām pushing her around the room. itās an art exhibit and some of her art was chosen to be showcased there and so itās all fine and dandy until suddenly an alarm starts going off
a FIRE ALARM
everyone starts running for the stairs and my friend just looks at me with this forlorn look on her face
āi canāt go down the stairsā
but iām a stubborn bitchĀ āiāll carry youā
āwhat about my chair? itās too expensive for me to be able to get another one if i canāt get this one backā
āiāll carry that tooā
and i did. we went to the stairs (by then most people from our floor were gone) and i lifted her up in a firemanās carry over my shoulder and then lifted her chair up and used the ridiculous amount of adrenaline that was coursing through my veins to make it down approximately 20 half-flights of stairs until we met some people exiting lower floors, one of which who kindly took the chair. I changed positions so i was holding my friend bridal-style which was, somehow, easier and the person who took her wheelchair (with her permission to handle it of course) accompanied me to the ground floor and then out the doors
basically there is no real protocol for people who canāt use the stairs in an emergency. itās up to the people with them, if anyone, to help them or the person to somehow make it down the stairs alone, unassisted
thank fuck that it was just a faulty alarm system, because if i was unable to carry her down those stairs and the building was on fucking fire???? then i donāt know what would have happened to her, but i donāt think it would have been very good.
itās fucking ridiculous and ableist to the absolute max.
I use a cane. When I did a day-long fire safety training at my northeast American university (UMass Amherst), I asked that exact same question: āwhat am I supposed to do if the fire alarm goes off and Iām in my lab on the twelfth floor?āĀ
the fire marshal hemmed and hawed for a while and then said to take the elevator- youāre supposed to leave it free for the fire department to use and they want able-bodied people out fast not waiting for elevators. if the fire alarm has just gone off the building probably hasnāt suffered enough structural damage to make using the elevator dangerous, and modern elevator wells are heavily reinforced. many large and high-trafficked buildings on my campus have fire rated elevators that link in with the fire alarm system so they wonāt let you off on a floor with a possible fire.Ā
if the elevator isnāt working, wait in the stairwell and call the fire department to let them know where you are. modern stairwells are also heavily reinforced- it might not be pleasant but modern building code usually requires fire-resistant stairwell doors in office and big residential buildings, also to help firefighters get in and out safely. older buildingsā stairwells may or may not be retrofitted with fire-resistant doors but a stairwell is generally the safest place to wait if you canāt get out.Ā
what happened to your friend was horrible, and iām very glad you were there to help her out, but you can absolutely use the elevator to evacuate if itās not shut down. those donāt-use-the-elevator rules are for abled people.Ā Ā
This is GOOD TO KNOW. why do they not tell people this??
Okay, firefighter here. If you are not physically able to use the stairs, and the elevator is NOT compromised, use the elevator. But you MUST be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the elevator is NOT compromised before you get into it, because there is always the chance that once you get into it, you may not exit it. Power could go out. The elevator may actually BE compromised and you just couldnāt tell from where you were until you were in there, and it suddenly shuts down on you. Something else could happen.Ā
Understand that once you enter the elevator, you could POTENTIALLY be taking your life into your hands there.
It is NOT LIKELY, to be perfectly honest. Itās only in a pretty catastrophic scenario - think the Twin Towers, USA, on September 11th - that the elevators will be compromised and out of service. But there is a NOT ZERO PERCENT CHANCE and you need to understand that and accept it.
As for leaving the elevators free for the firefighters, okay, hereās the deal. Unless your nearest fire station is literally right next door? Your first on scene fire truck is NOT likely to be there on scene and needing that elevator before you get to the ground. It takes us TIME to find the address, gear up, and drive to the building. Then we need to hoof it into where the elevators even ARE, so YOU HAVE TIME to use the elevator to get down to the ground floor... BUT ONLY IF THEREāS NOT A RUSH ON THE ELEVATOR! And THAT is WHY we donāt tell people this shit. Thatās WHY we tell people to NEVER USE THE ELEVATOR... because every self-entitled asshole will use it because they donāt feel like walking, and then put YOU in danger by delaying the elevatorās arrival to you.
IF, however, the elevator IS compromised, or you just canāt get it to come for you, or whatever, and you either donāt have anyone with you who has the adrenaline fueled BALLS to be able to toss you over their shoulder and hoof it down the stairs with you - because, letās face it, that is RARE AS FUCK, then HERE IS WHAT YOU DO:
You call 911 and tell the call taker that you are in the building that has a fire alarm going off, and you are not able to evacuate because of a physical disability, and you tell them what floor you are on, and EXACTLY what stairwell you are waiting at. And the very FIRST thing that the firefighters are going to do once they arrive, if it is, indeed, a REAL emergency, and not a false alarm, is come get your ass and bring you down. Whether that means carrying you down the stairs, or whether that means locking out the elevators so that no one else can override them and coming to get you themselves, they WILL come get you FIRST THING if it is a real event. And if it is a false alarm? You will probably be the first person who is not involved with the building to know, because the call-taker is going to stay on the line with you until you are under someoneās care and out of danger, or until the scene has been sorted out as real or false, and you are out of danger that way.
These are pretty standard operations in the fire service throughout the United States. There may be some minor variations based on specific municipalities, but, for the most part, this is pretty typical: LIFE BEFORE PROPERTY. So, as long as SOMEONE knows where you are - hence why you call 911 - Firefighters will come get you. You are NOT alone, and you have NOT been abandoned. I PROMISE. Itās like, our whole reason for doing the shit we do: to save lives and to break shit. Sometimes, we get lucky enough to do both at the same time.
High rise fires suck ass, and I always hated them. But the very FIRST thing I asked anytime we got one was if we hadĀ āany entrapmentsā - which is what we call anyone who could not self-evacuate for ANY reason. We aināt leaving you behind. And yes, your friend who doesnāt have the stamina to carry you down can stay with you, too. Because I would never ask that of someone, honestly.Ā
Also, just a little FYI... MOST fire alarms are false alarms. Not to make anyone complacent or anything, but, yeah. Most of them are either system malfunctions, someone accidentally hit a pull station, or someone burned popcorn in a break room. So donāt let a fire alarm freak you out until you need it to - by smelling or seeing smoke or flames.Ā
i have had multiple nightmares about this very thing because NOBODY BOTHERS TO ACTUALLY TELL WHEELCHAIR USERS THIS STUFF
Happy disability pride month!
More body positivity and general support for fat girls with eating disorders
I donāt usually add to posts like this but this is super important to me and this is why:
When I was thirteen, I told my therapist about my eating disorder. I was starving myself for days, then binging and purging, and then starving myself again, etc etc.Ā
I told my therapist this and she said to meĀ āThatās not going to help you lose weight.ā And she told me to see my doctor about a diet plan. And she asked if I had anything else I wanted to talk about.Ā
I told my best friend as a last ditch effort to get someone to care. I pulled her aside at a church meeting and said I had something to tell her. It was so hard for me to say.Ā
She laughed it off and said she was expecting worse and then she told meĀ ādonāt do that anymoreā with a smile. And I said okay, thanks, and we went back outside. And I got the sense that she was humoring me, likeĀ āaw, fat girl thinks she has a skinny person illness.ā
Those were the only two people I told. I kept it to myself after that. I had NO support. I had to claw my way out of my ED on my own. I still get the urge to throw up sometimes if Iāve had a big meal, or skip a meal or work out until I pass out.Ā
Please support fat girls with eating disorders. Please help them. Please donāt make them feel like they deserve what they are doing to themselves.Ā
I have said it once and Iāll say it again: we absolutely teach young people disordered eating
I remember seeing a womenās magazine advertising the ācoffee dietā where they advised drinking warm cups of coffee in place of meals
and that - thatās an ana trick, drinking hot water to convince yourself youāve had food
The magazine acted like it was perfectly reasonable to eat one meal a day
Itās not alarming to most people to see a fat girl skipping meals. It is easy to hide the disorder in the open because no one thinks āshe hasnāt eaten lunch a single time this week.ā Even if someone does notice, itās seen as an attempt to āget healthyā and not āholy fuckballs, is she starving herself? Should I be worried? Should I try to help?ā
A fat girl eating is cause for ridicule. A fat girl not eating is nothing to worry about.
i hate when ultra religious freaks do some evil shit and people are like āthis was motivated by misogyny not religion!ā āno this was motivated by religion not misogyny!ā as if its impossible for both to be true. in fact, misogyny is baked into most major religions and religious misogyny is a thing.

I suggest deleting info or pics of yourself on here. Any info, especially college information and/or where you reside.
As of recent..Iāve been seeing my mutuals being outted as āTERFsā to their college peers, being accused of doing graffiti, etc, having their blogs be found/given outā¦I have a suspicion something is up because itās happened too much the past 2-3 weeks where itās just a coincidence.
I recently just had someone tried to hack into my account. Thankfully it was unsuccessful
Here is what you can do to protect your account:
Go to your settings and turn on Phone Verification & Two-Factor Authentication. Better one than none. Preferably both.
If someone tries to enter your account, and you get hit with a message from a # giving you an authentication codeā¦go into your account, change your email and password.
If your password is associated with that email on other websites or the email login itselfā¦change passwords ASAP.
Always ALWAYS ALWAYS have two-factor authentication on, for all social media profiles. I donāt care if itās Discord. I donāt care if itās Snapchat or Instagram. Do it for everything. It will save you grief.
Just wanted to give a heads up.
You can also use āhttps://haveibeenpwned.comā to see if your email / password has been compromised as well.
Here's a helpful webpage: A DIY guide to Feminist Cybersecurity
also my own protip, because I post selfies and OC: Get an EXIF data remover. Remove all the metadata and EXIF from your pictures/screenshots before you post them. Anyone with knowledge of reading metadata would be able to see your location if it is enabled on the picture. There are free EXIF removers on the app store, I have an iPhone and I use the app "Exif Metadata" by New Marketing Lab to wipe all metadata on my photos before I post them. I am sure there are many other free resources on PC and Android to do this, so use them!
I don't know shit about cybersecurity, if it says "Pwned in 1 data breach and found no pastes" what does that mean and what do I have to do?
I think what that means is that your password / email has been breached, like found out, but it wasnāt posted in pastebins or other hacker forums. Itās not being sold or traded, at least publicly. (I doubt it, sounds like hacker was just bored tbh)
Itās not bad but itās not good either. I would still change your email or password for the website it was breached on (if itās been found out) and not use that password again for your own safety.
My friend told me about this app called Aura where they can remove your information online. It is a paid subscription but Iām throwing it out there in case anyone has been pwned & pasted. You can put in name, address, email address, bank info, etc. this app will find if your info has been āpastedā (aka posted online) and even remove it for you. I believe itās $15 a month, but itās basically a step about identity theft protection m. My friend is a hacker himself and says that this app can help save you grief and money (money as in, God forbid someone is selling your info online)

why is it so hard for able bodied people to believe that doctors are sometimes just incompetent? you realize doctors are people, right? people that can be bad at their job. that happens sometimes. they don't know everything because there's a piece of paper on their wall that says they're smart, actually. they can sometimes be wrong, actually. they can sometimes cut corners and take the easy way out, actually. they can sometimes hate their job and make that their patients problem, actually. doctors aren't all saints who do everything right the first time. please stop invalidating disabled people when they complain about their terrible treatment at the hands of medical professionals. please stop putting the feelings of doctors over the lives of their patients.
I spend a fair amount of timeĀ teaching womenĀ to kick men in the balls, and Iāve learned that this activity tends to generate controversy. Here, according to actual adults who have actually said these things to me, are some reasons you shouldĀ notĀ kick a guy in the balls:
1. It will make him angry.
I should hope so. Iām not sending him a friend request. If I kick him hard enough, thereās a good chance Iāll render him unable to act upon his anger.Ā ThatāsĀ my goal. His feelings are his problem.
2. It will make him hurt you worse.
Statistics sayĀ otherwise. And anyway, heās already demonstrated his desire to hurt me. Why should I give him carte blanche to decideĀ how muchĀ heās going to hurt me? Iād rather be an active participant in that decision-making process.
3. Groin kicks arenāt really that devastating; Iāve seen lots of guys get hit in the balls and it hardly fazed them.
This response (almost universally from men) is so common Iāve come to think of it as āgroinsplainingāāyou can see it many of the YouTube comments in the videos linked above. These people rarely volunteer to demonstrate their own iron balls in a real kicking situation, but they confidently assert that men in general can shrug off all kinds of damage to the groin. All I can say is, Iāve seen two-year-olds take down grown menĀ via the groin, and toddlers donāt even have any training. I do. I like my odds.
4. We shouldnāt be teaching people how to kick men in the balls; we should be teaching men not to do anything that would make us have to kick them in the balls.
Hey, thatās a great idea! Do you have a detailed, research-based plan for teaching all men everywhere to behave themselves all the time? And do you have funding for your efforts, and buy-in from politicians and community leaders, and a network of trained, experienced instructors who can effect this change? If not, better get started on your grant proposal. In the meantime, Iāll just be over here teaching people how to kick guys in the balls.Ā Thatās what I do.
5. Telling people they should kick an assailant in the balls is the same as telling victims who didnāt kick their assailant in the balls that they did something wrong.
No, it isnāt. Itās a practical way toĀ reduceĀ the number of future victims by giving them more viable options to disrupt and survive an assault.
Fact: We have the power to damage the bodies of men who try to hurt us. Youāre saying we shouldnāt let people use that power. Iām offering people more choices; youāre trying to take them away.
6. Kicking a guy in the balls just makes the world a more violent place.
Maybe, in the short term. But if it stops him from killing someone, or putting them in the hospital, isnāt that a net win for non-violence? The Dalai LamaĀ thinks so.
One in four women will have good reason to kick a guy in the ballsĀ at some point in her life. Luckily, itās not rocket science. Anyone can do it! And ball-kickingās efficacy is beyond dispute, as the men of MMA so nobly helped us illustrate here. Gentlemen, if any of you are reading this, and conscious: Cheers, and get well soon (the non-wife-beaters among you, anyway).
AIA REPORTING FOR DUTY
okay, so!
There is a trick to it. You do NOT want to soccer kick the dude because thatās a little projectile aiming at a littler target.
Itāll do in a pinch, and itāll hurt, but it wonāt incapacitate, which is what you want. You donāt want āouch!ā Or even āFUCK!ā
You want him puking on the floor, and this is how we do:
Thereās two ranges where a groin kick works: close and mid-range.
Say someone grabs you face to face, or pins you to the wall, and your hands are blocked. Now youāre close-range. What do you do? You come in closer, as close as you can, and with every ounce of adrenaline and aggression in your body, you do a can-can kick.
You know the first step in the can-can, where you raise your knee up as high as itāll go as strong as you can?
Do that, as hard as you can, repeatedly.
If that doesnāt work, hereās the alternative. Youāre going to take your hand, grasp between the thighs underhand. Its going to feel like youāre ācradlingā the testicles. Dig your fingertips into the fragile skin BEHIND the scrotum. Then, once you have a good grip, you turn your hand into a vise, with your fingers digging inwards to the material. If you do it right, you should feel the testes INSIDE the scrotum. You want, whenever possible, to hook your fingers under them.
Then, with your hands in a claw and your fingertips latched behind the testes, you turn your hand sharply, as though you were turning a doorknob. Simultaneously, haul your elbow back and up as hard as you can.
If done properly, this technique can tear the scrotal tissue, and done with enough force, can tear the testes out of your attackerās body.
No matter HOW pissed he is, heās gonna drop. Iāve tried this technique on guys wearing cups and even with protection, it is not a fun feeling.
If youāre mid-range and have enough room for a kick, the goal becomes to use your shin. The shin is actually called the tibia, which ounce for ounce is one of the strongest bones in your body. So, hereās what you do, my little bloodthirsty beaus:
You aim, you scream āDO NOT COME CLOSER I SAID NO!ā (legal purposes, because now youāre officially exercising your right to self-defence). Maintain a 360 degree awareness, just in case he has friends, and then, when heās close enough, connect your shin full on soccer kick with the delicate squish of his testicles.
What you want is as much upwards force as possible in combination with as much momentum as you can manage. When he collapses, which he will, then stomp on his groin again, and then run.
The latter has less of a trick to it. Itās primarily about momentum and force.
Remember, if youāre close enough to put your hands on him, use your knee. If heās coming at you, use your shin.
If you can smell the nachos he had for dinner, rip his fucking balls off.
Itās easy to do, theyāre tiny little squishiness wrapped in a delicate flap of skin about as thin as a toenail.
Remember: if heās coming at you, heās ALREADY out to hurt you. Might as well give the fucker a reason to be pissed.
How to Kick a Guy in the Balls: An Illustrated Guide
Someone once told me that the way to train a proper knee in the groin (with appropriate aggression if you want to hurt him enough to let you go is to train and act as if youāre not aiming your knee at the groin, but aiming for somewhere much higher so that your mind knows to really ram your knee upward.
A male friend of a friend of the family once generously and kindly advised me that if anyone with nuts ever got up on me without me wanting him to do so, to āgrab his balls as hard as you can, squeeze, and yank away from his body until they feel like marmalade. Then run.ā I have never forgotten this advice.
My self-defense trainer used to say:Ā āEyes are like grapes. Ears are like pull tabs. And if youāre going to grab some, girls - grab, pull, twist, and bring those balls home to Mama.ā ā¦I really need to embroider that on a cushion.
https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2015/12/30/why-dont-men-kick-each-other-in-the-balls/Ā
āWhat would street fights between guys look likeāor professional fights for that matterāif one could go below the belt? For one, thereād be a lot more collapsing. Two, a lot more writhing in pain. Three, a lot less getting up. All in all, it would add up to less time looking powerful and more time looking pitiful. And it would send a clear message that menās bodies are vulnerable.ā
ā¦
āSo, men generally agree to pretend that the balls just arenāt there. The effect is that we tend to forget just how vulnerable men are to the right attack and continue to think of women as naturally more fragile.ā
And:
https://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2017/07/31/i-argue-that-men-avoid-ball-kicking-to-protect-the-myth-of-masculinity-men-respond-in-the-most-surprising-way/
āIn 2015 I wrote an essay in which I speculated about why we donāt see men kicking each other in the balls more often. We leave no stones unturned here at SocImages, folks.I argued that men donāt kick each other in the balls because it would reveal to everyone an inherent and undeniable biological weakness in every man, not just the man getting kicked. Ā In other words, itās a secret pact to protect the myth of masculine superiority. I expected a reaction, but I was genuinely surprised at what transpired. In public ā in the comments ā men debated strategy, arguing that men donāt kick each other in the balls because itās actually a difficult blow to land or would escalate the fight. But in private ā in my email inbox ā men sent me hushed messages of you-are-so-right-though.ā
Just doing my regular reblog. Remember to go for the nuts.
Tears the nuts off or crush them with the force of your anger.
As someone whoās captained a martial arts team, I 100% approve of the crotch-grab-twist. Works like a charm š
Remember that it takes roughly 50lbs of force to rupture the outer tunica albuginea.
In other words: it takes 50lb of force to essentially explode a testicle.
The average untrained person can exert anywhere from 60-80psi in a punch.
The average kick strength is considerably more.
Now, if youāre worried about aim ā a follow up trick.
Letās assume the dude is up in your business and youād rather he be dead at your feet. Valid!
If heās close enough to grab you, youāre close enough to return the favour. IF SO:
Thumbs to eyeballs, and dig in like theyāre grapes. Aim your thumbnails into his tear ducts, and then scoop outwards, as hard as you can. Scratch the cornea if youāre able to do so.
If you cannot, and a kick is going to become necessary ā
Reach up, as though you were going in for one of those movie kisses. Your hands should meet at the back of his neck. Link your fingers together, hard as you can.
Using his height and the leverage created by the linked hands, take your knee⦠and then introduce it to his nuts.
Now, you donāt want to knee him in the *nuts*. Thatās nowhere near enough force. Instead, pretend as though youāre trying to knee him in the belly-button, or the solar plexus. Pretend you have to get your knee up into the abdominal cavity, and exert that much pressure.
Remember: youāre going to piss him off, and an angry man whoās already grabbed you is a dangerous foe. You will have one shot to fuck him up ā
So hit him hard enough that he canāt get up, and then run like heāll kill you if he catches you.
people are constantly trying to deny disabled people the privilege of their own anger. we're forced into situations we don't want to be in have to rely on people or institutions we don't want to, have to constantly project the idea that we're thankful, hopeful, trying our best... it's ridiculous. when a disabled person is angry about something people flock to tell them that they shouldn't feel this emotion. "doctors are trying to help you", "be grateful you even have what you do", "you're the one making yourself miserable". at the end of the day it just goes to show that they don't think disabled people deserve even the meagre amount that we are given, so that's why they think we have no right to be angry
