I love that this is basically the same as the “We have a Hulk” scene in Avengers (and came out before it) but that in terms of the Leverage Crew, the Hulk, who you’d think would be Elliot (rage, not good with talking out his emotions, Mr. Punchy) is actually Hardison (that cheerful grin, the sass, the neverending well of love and joy).  Because the truth is, Elliot can’t do that always angry thing.  He can’t sustain his anger, he can only sustain his pain.  He can’t simmer for ages, he has to get in there and Do Something when he gets mad.  He’s Steve, to be honest.  But Hardison?  Hardison who hacked a foreign bank on prom night to pay back his Nana for all the good she did her foster kids?  Hardison who buries himself in games and toys and gummy frogs and orange soda because that’s what people expect of the “geek”? Hardison who grew up poor, and orphaned, and black, and oh so incredibly smart?  Hardison who is so constantly afraid, of dust, of small spaces, of high places, who loves a vent-crawling building jumping thief like she’s the sun?  Who had to hold Parker’s hand as she panicked about foster kids in Eastern Europe somehow ending up broken like her?

Hardison is angry.

He’s always angry.

And no puny evil like Damian Moreau can stop him.

This is lovely meta and I totally love the analogy between this scene and “We have a Hulk” but I’d like to point out something that Hardison excels at that the Hulk doesn’t. Hardison is stable.

Hardison is the most stable member of the team, in every respect.

Externally/Financially: 

It is the young, geeky black man, who also has a quiet love for fine art and classical music, that bankrolls Leverage.  Hardison makes sure they have a paycheck, makes sure they have a home.  Whenever they need a new place to stay or they’re on the lam, it’s Hardison’s apartment, Hardison’s house, Hardison’s brew pub.  Nate constantly says they have an alternative revenue source? That revenue source is Hardison.  His knowledge, his know-how, his working the stock market. In all the external markers of stability, Hardison has one over all the rest of the team, and he’s often responsible for the rest of the team in that respect, as well.  He’s their safety net, and he wants to be.

Internally/Emotionally:

Hardison didn’t have the easiest childhood but he actually had a fairly good one. Nana was his foster mother, but he loves Nana and Nana loves him.  He loves his foster siblings, too, speaks of them with fondness, and it’s implied that he has that family as an emotional/familial support group outside of the team, (which is something no one else really has). He’s still in frequent, regular contact with his Nana, and they have a positive, good relationship that isn’t strained or littered with past hurts.

He’s in touch with his emotions, he’s not afraid to express them and own them.  (He’s like T’Challa in that respect, and I love that it is representation of a young black man who can be soft, to be vulnerable or sad or scared or freaked out and it doesn’t detract from his strength.)  He’s willing to be vulnerable in front of the team, to let them see his doubts and fears.  That takes such emotional and internal strength, to be willing to expose and share moments of weakness, and Hardison has no problems.  AND, Hardison knows, for the most part, how to deal with those struggles in a healthy way.  How to channel his anger constructively, how to not let his sadness or fear overwhelm him.  Even how to let the others help when he needs it; how to be reassured and internalize it. He also knows very well who he is, what he is.  He has such a strong rooted sense of self, and one that he’s proud of.  Sophie rarely dislikes herself, but there’s and entire half a season where she takes the time to try and figure out who, exactly, she is.  Eliot knows himself, knows exactly who he is and his limitations, but he doesn’t love himself, not the way that Hardison loves himself, not in completeness. Nate outright hates himself for a while, and struggles a lot with dealing with his loss and figuring out where that leaves him.  Parker knows that in some ways she’s different and in other ways she is broken, and while she is largely happy with herself she still struggles with herself, and deeply. Hardison… doesn’t.  He can be frustrated with his lack of ability, at times, but he is never upset with who he is; or really what makes Hardison, Hardison.

Hardison knows how to be casual, how to reassure without manipulating.  He can put clients at ease; he can pass for ‘normal’ and healthy in a way that the others can’t because he IS healthy, emotionally.  Hardison can—and does—call the team out when they’re being crazy or weird or a little too out there when it comes to emotional stability.  And, he can connect with the entire team, on their level.  Especially Parker.  Parker doesn’t operate the same way he operates, but he knows how to communicate in a way that doesn’t force either of them to stop being who they are.  He knows how to be patient, and careful, and let others approach at their own pace.  He doesn’t push too hard, or stretch limits until they break.

Hardison doesn’t just ‘get angry’, he doesn’t have to ‘control’ his anger, to leash it.  And I think I would argue that he’s not always angry. Hardison knows how to live his life, and he has his life in order, so when he needs to get angry, when he needs to get serious, and to get it together, he can be righteously furious. Nate is arguably the brains—and the dad—of the Leverage family, and in many ways Sophie and Eliot share the position of the heart.  Sophie’s also sort of the mom/fun aunt.  Eliot the protective brother, the shield.  Parker is their spirit.  The drive to do good and to be wild and a reminder that Leverage can wear pretty faces but they are wild and untamed and they won’t break.  Hardison is their foundation, their solid ground, their safe haven.  Hardison is the rock on which they stand, and built, and grow.

As someone recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, one thing that’s been helping me grapple with the intense shame I have over all my “wasted potential” is accepting that potential doesn’t exist and never did.

This sounds so harsh, but please bare with me.

I procrastinated a lot growing up. I still procrastinate today, but less so. And yet, I got good grades. I could write an A+ paper that “knocked [my professor]’s socks off” in the hour before class and print it with sweat running down my face.

I was so used to hearing from teachers and family that if I just didn’t procrastinate and worked all the time, I could do anything! I had all this potential I wasn’t living up to!

And that’s true, as far as it goes, but that’s like saying if Usain Bolt just kept going he could be the fastest marathon runner in the world. Why does he stop at the end of the race??

If ANYONE could make their top speed/most productive setting the one they used all the time, anyone could do anything. But you can’t. Your top speed is not a speed you’re able to sustain.

Now, I’ve found that I do need to work on not procrastinating. Not because the product is better, even, but because it’s better for my mental health and physical health to not have a full, sweating, panicked breakdown over every task even if the task itself turns out excellently. It’s a shitty way to live! You feel bad ALL the time! And I don’t deserve to live like that anymore.

So all of this to say, I’m not wasting a ton of potential. I don’t have an ocean of productivity and accomplishments inside of me that I could easily, effortlessly access if I just sat down 8 hours a day and worked. There’s no fucking way. That’s not real. It’s an illusion. It’s fine not to live up to an illusion.

And if you have ADHD, I mean this from the bottom of my heart: you do not have limitless potential confounded by your laziness. You have the good potential of a good person, and you can access it with practice and work, but do not accept the story that you are choosing not to be all that you are or can be. You are just a human person.

goddd i just want spider-man's identity to be his own worst but new york city's best kept secret. like i want him unthinkingly taking off his mask and like 20 people see, but if you ask them if they did? no they didn't.

the rule is unwritten, but very enforced. like, there are online communities dedicated to erasing any trace of the spread of his identity. a tourist takes a photo of him and posts it online? it's gone in minutes, and people send DMs to the poster anywhere from "hey, i'm sure you were just excited, but...." to "ill kill u if i evr c you, fuckin bitch".

any information on spider-man is only spread via word of mouth, and only spoken in hushed, awed voices. after several years of spider-man, everyone knows someone who encountered him:

"he saved my cousin. caught a falling billboard from underneath with his bare hands..."

"wow... i've never seen him myself, but he talked to my coworker's daughter for an hour after he stopped a guy from getting a little too handsy. apparently, his smile is 'dreamy'."

these secrets are freely given if you're kind, trustworthy, and show respect for the little guy. but the moment you demand information on him... "i don't know what you're talking about, buddy. he's just an urban legend the news likes to blame the city's problems on so we don't unionize or worse"

so as many times as spider-man ends up with out a mask, or accidentally introduces himself with a name that starts with 'p' and rhymes with 'meter'... on the record, they don't know a thing. because he does his best to help as many people as he can, so it's only fair if they help him a little in return.

1. THE PLOT

That's it. That's the plot.

JK JK but fr, he's insanely hot and he's also the strongest in the manhwa. He's like a Gojo Satoru with Sukuna's attitude. Plus, he's a tsundere.

2. THE ACTUAL PLOT

The author of Eleceed also wrote the popular Noblesse. AAAAA anyway, what I'm saying is that he's an amazing writer. The characters in Eleceed is sooo well written. They all have their own personality that feels so real and the best part is their character developments.

For my peeps who don't know what the plot is about. Basically, there are "awakened ones" who possess power and they live among normal people. And in the manhwa they kinda fight and stuff XD I'm stopping here since I don't want to spoil the plot too much.

3. OTHER SUB-PLOTS

Basically other hotties ;)

4. THE ART

Not only the plot is sooo well-written, the art is also amazingly drawn. Like- LOOK AT REASON NUMBER 1 AND 3.

But seriously, you can literally know what the characters are doing in the fight. You can actually see a right hook or a left kick and such. And they have such cool powers.

And at some point of the story, it's just hella satisfying to prove wrong the people who looked down on my precious MC 🤩💅✨

I finally read enough to write this 🤧 Also I'm assuming Kayden outside of him being a cat, if not... Well.

— This man will bully you, don't think you're an exception because you're dating him. Even if you're the Great Kayden's precious girlfriend, you aren't escaping his teasing. However, if anyone else teased you, he will get extremely shifty-eyed. Glaring holes into their skull, if you will.

Honestly, someone pushing you around would be the worst offence in his eyes. Even if you were trying to be the better person, Kayden wouldn't. He'll beat them up, no hesitation. This man is ready to go at the slightest of offence.

— Humility is not within your man's vocabulary. Being self-aware is one thing, but underestimating or overestimating yourself will annoy him. He'd want you to have a go-getter mindset and work to better yourself if you're down about anything. Needless to say, his advice tends to be more on the practical side instead of emotional.

— He's pretty blasé to others and he has no regard for anyone. If you're his person then you're his person, very clear cut about it. Probably didn't even get shy when he asked you out because he knew how your feelings for him were.

The jump between the two relationship statuses can be pretty sudden if you weren't aware of how he treated you differently.

— This man is not shy about any form of romantic physical affection at all. He casually throws his arm behind you when sitting on the couch, hugging you from behind to check on whatever you're doing in the kitchen, flopping down on you whenever he sees you laying down. The last one stems from his cat days, he can't help it.

If you want to kiss in public, he'll kiss you in public. Has a very whatever attitude to everything, if he doesn't do anything then it'd be because of the hassle it would bring.

— Messing with him will result in every type of naughty revenge a person can come up with. However, he's also a master at pranking you back. It becomes a bit of a game between the two of you to one-up each other at one point. Your boyfriend is insufferable.

— He star-fish when he sleeps alone but when you sleep with him, he will become an octopus. It's annoying to disentangle yourself to go to the toilet at night because he clings.

However, if you take too long to return, he'll cuddle with your pillow and then you'll have to fight an asleep Kayden back for your pillow. He might or might not be a light sleeper and did those to mess with you for waking him up.

— He's surprisingly strong for his frame, you once had him straight uplifting you above his head to find something he lost on the couch before. It was a surreal experience.

— Honestly... He has definitely used you as an excuse to not meet people before. One bonus of being with you was that he could turn all of these people down because he “has” to do something with you when they didn't hear him the first time he turned them down.

Somehow, you accidentally got a reputation for being a clingy girlfriend because your boyfriend couldn't keep his mouth shut.

— You became Jiwoo's new mom by the extension of your relationship with Kayden. That's it, you have a new son, now. Don't even think about getting out of it. Why would you, anyway? Jiwoo is super endearing and lovable.

— Also, not Kayden casually suggesting you have some of your own one of these days when Jiwoo is all grown up and capable of handling himself 😩 Man has no subtlety.

He's surprisingly good with children, mostly older ones not younger. Something about infants terrifies him because he's a walking force of destruction. However, once they are more durable, say, toddler or even early childhood years, he'd love to play with them.

— He doesn't like being associated with groups, so if you being in one would make him more hesitant to get attached to you. While he can differentiate between nobler and shadier groups, there was no telling when your leader might get you to go against him for the group's benefits.

After facing too much backstabbing in the past because his refusal to get affiliated, he has decided it was wiser to not trust people easily. Anyone who is anyone have agenda these days.

— Gaining Kayden's trust is not easy, but once you managed to accomplish that task, you found out that he's much more open to you in terms of emotions. His trust also goes hand in hand with respect. He confides in you more often, shares with you about his worries, and believes you'll always have his back.

There are times when his own demons get the better of him, when he thinks that you are better off witbout him. Once you chased these doubts away, however, he will come to appreciate you even more.

— He's good at pulling all-nighter without problems but when he spends time cuddling with you, it's very easy for him to fall asleep. His walls fall down and he gets so annoyingly comfortable with you that he dozes off a little.

You have to be completely still afterwards because the slightest movement can wake him up. Has an amazing ability to snap right back into whatever he was doing before he fell asleep.

— Likes whatever kisses he can get and give while hugging you from behind. He just really likes doing that in general, it's more casual than a normal embrace.

With this, he can easily put his chin on your shoulder or even the top of your head depends on how vertically challenged you were.

— One of his surprisingly soft moments is how he always kisses you before the two of you part. Sometimes, if it's for something dangerous, he won't hesitate telling you that he loves you.

Kayden probably doesn't say it often as he sees there are better ways to express it. However, there are times when words managed to tell everything.

— Drags you around everywhere and proudly calls you as his girl. Homeboy has ZERO shame when it comes to flaunting his amazing girlfriend and it shows.

Always has an arm on you to show that you're with him, too. Basically once you agreed to go out with him, his shame vanished into thin air and had never been seen again.

— That was a lie actually, if you ever gave him a cute kiss, like on the nose or the forehead, he will shrivel up and die. The evil has been vanquished, Jisuk crumbled and dispersed into dust.

Blatant romantic affection does very little to fluster him and often weaponized by him agaisnt you. However... cutesy ones against him... he can't handle it.. it's too much.

— Would get into fistfights with Subin whenever she teased the two of you for being a lovey-dovey couple, but immediately activate simp mode if you told him to stop.

He pretty much snaps too attention and ditches Subin behind to run to you. It's embarrassing to look at but he will sneer at whoever pointed at out to tell them that they were jealous of him.

— Speaking of jealousy... He gets even more annoying when he's jealous in a relationship because there's a sense of entitlement which comes with it. Being your boyfriend gives him a tremendous amount of audacity that leads him to acting out.

If anyone so much as look at you in a way he didn't like (glaring, leering, etc.), he'd not hesitate to put them into their places. It's like having a guard dog in the shape of a boyfriend. Buy one get one free.

— Gets all of your anniversaries right and goes out of his ways to prepare everything while playing off as he didn't put in too much effort. At the same time, can't remember which brand and type your sanitary product is despite having to buy it twelve times already.

— Thinks horror movies or horror games at the arcade are the best date ideas ever if you're afraid of either. One thing because he can flex his ability and show off to you, another because nothing can defeat the feeling of having you relying on him.

However, he's still on the fence about haunted house because of that one extremely realistic one both of you went to.

— He finds matching clothes too cheesy for his taste but he can definitely do matching shoes and phone cases. In fact, he'd not mind doing some shoe shopping with you once it came down to it.

He's actually a bit peculiar about his own shoes so you can get some good advice from him. Ugh, just imagine Jisuk tying your shoelace for you.

— Has a tendency of being greedy while kissing you. He's never satisfied with one or two little pecks. If you dropped any of those on him, he'd pull you back to get a proper kiss before letting you go.

Likes having a hand holding your face or the back of your head so he can easily change the angle. Pretty experimental and exploratory at the beginning, he's surprisingly receptive to learning.

— His room is only a little bit messy, but somehow, whenever you come over, it's always squeaky clean. Must be magic.

He actually has a bit of a boyish room, minimalistic furnitures in gray to black colour. His room is pretty stylish... when it's clean.

— His texting style doesn't use that much emojis unless it's him mocking someone. However, he'd definitely make a sacrifice to send you heart emojis. You're the sole exception in this.

In fact, you're the only one whose chat interface with him is extensively customized. With themes, icons, even nicknames. Mostly for you though.

— Often uses your lap as a pillow while he's laying down and doesn't mind the opposite. He thinks the view from below is fantastic and honestly, he'll play with your hair if you're the one laying down.

— Okay, this one is for the Tik Tok users. He's definitely the scary dog privilege people talk about when they film those videos. One hundred percent having him around saves you from most types of troubles.

And if new ones arise? His policy is think first, act later, he's going to deal with it for you before you can even think.

— Before the two of you got together, Jisuk called you a friend of his to Jiyoung. However, his sisterly instinct could notice that his feelings for you were nowhere near being platonic and it was hinging on the romantic side of the scale. She was among the people least surprised to see the two of you ended up together.

— Has a habit of squeezing whenever he cuddles with you, he can't help it, you're probably like a plush toy when you're in his arms. A very delicate, very expensive, very prized plush toy, if that's any comfort. He'll nuzzle unintentionally, wanting to have as many contacts with you as possible. Jisuk is not much of a kisser while cuddling, but he's happy to take any that you give him.

— Still teases you, don't think you're completely saved from his teasing. Like Kayden, it's just how he expresses his affection and has no problem with you teasing him back. However, if you ever caught him off-guard by responding to his teasing with cute pouting instead, he'd not be able to hold himself back. Be aware that if you did that, it might give him more initiative to tease you though. Smack him on the arm if necessary.

words:10000 (For works of exactly 10,000 words.) words:1000-5000 (For works between 1,000 and 5,000 words.) words:<25000 (For works under 25,000 words.) words:>6000 (For works over 6,000 words.)

Save All The Fic!

My primary fandom has undergone a lot of changes over the last few years and there is nothing that I mourn more than deleted fic.

A few years ago, I started downloading and archiving a good chunk of the fic that I read so that I could preserve it. I’m up to over 8.5k of fic (which I honestly don’t know whether to be impressed or highly disturbed with myself).  Here’s some tricks that I’ve discovered.

Download Calibre. It’s a fanfolk’s favorite application for organizing and collecting digital works. Here’s how my library looks:

Calibre makes organization such a breeze. You can create virtual libraries, so each of your fandoms are separate, which makes searching easier. I’ve downloaded all of my purchased books from Amazon into Calibre, for example, using a plugin that inserts my DRM into the ebook and therefore makes them portable, and have a separate library for them. Mobi, Amazon, Epub, PDF, HTML are all supported.

There are a few plug-ins for calibre that makes a fanfolk’s life a dream. The absolute-must-have is Fanficfare. FanFicFare is a tool for downloading fanfiction and original stories from various supported sites into ebook form (epub, mobi, html, txt). Supported sites include Archive Of Our Own and Fanfiction.net, as well as hundreds of other fandom specific fic sites (mugglenet and scarves&coffee for example). Unfortunately, Tumblr, WattPad, deviantART, and Livejournal are NOT supported. FanFicFare also does not support or create PDF. Fanficfare is extremely easy to use. Simply search for the plugin, download and activate, and follow the directions to configure the default file to convert, save usernames and passwords (helpful for sites which have age restrictions), and click on buttons to tell the program the format to download and how to manage covers and metadata. You can then download stories individually or as an anthology (I have not figured out how to separate an anthology once downloaded, and I decided a few months ago that I much prefer the “series” way of organizing that AO3 uses rather than combining them all). WIPs can be updated and new chapters added with just a simple click. 

The second plugin that I use frequently is Generate Cover which allows me to insert any fanart as the cover for epubs/mobi. For PDFs, the cover is there in calibre but not attached to the file. 

I used to use Epub Merge/Epub Split to join separate chapters downloaded from LJ as epubs, but since I’ve changed my methods, I don’t use it as much. Still, it’s easy to use. 

Of course, Archive Of Our Own has its own download option which makes it one of the easiest sites to preserve stories for personal reading. Simply click on the download button and choose between epub, mobi and PDF formats. I don’t actually like the default format look and from what I can see, the metadata (besides name and author) is not preserved on download, so I download epubs using Fanficfare. YMMV.

Downloading ebooks from AO3 or using Fanficfare will probably save 80-90% fic, but you’ll probably run into fic on unsupported sites, particularly from livejournal or tumblr. Here’s some of my techniques for getting those fic.

My current method is to use Safari as my browser and use “Reader View.” I then print to save as a PDF. If there are multiple parts, I then use Preview on my Mac to combine all of the parts into one pdf.

Option 2 uses two chrome extensions: Boom! which removes extra forms - including comments, headers or random graphics, leaving just the text. I then use EasyReader to format it, and then save it as a PDF. I had problems with the italics and bold getting removed from the PDF and couldn’t fix it, so I’ve switched to the Safari method above.

Other methods that may or may not work for you.

Instapaper is a simple tool for grabbing pages of the internet and saving them to an account for online reading. It also allows for downloading multiple pages as one epub. Unfortunately, it can have problems handling LJ and tumblr themes, leading to wonky borders. It’s biggest limitation is that you can’t rearrange your links, and so therefore must save and move each chapter in order - which can be frustrating for a long story. I’m having an easier time of downloading as a PDF as above and merging.

iReader. Another chrome extension to enhance the readability. When you print it, it added on a footer with the URL and title.  Unfortunately, for me, it has a tendency to split sentences across pages and therefore renders them unreadable, but I know several people who use this plug-in who don’t have that issue.

JustRead. Chrome extension. Removes styling, comments and ads. Also adds a date and an author field (which can be helpful when downloading fic from a community). Unfortunately, it also tends to be the buggiest and the most unpredictable in its output.

dotEPUB. Converts any webpage into an epub or mobi format with just a click of the plugin. It’s clean and functional, although it tends not to be pretty and the website adds a standard (ugly) cover to every ebook (I hear you can change this; I haven’t figured out how). For multichapter fic, it has to be used with a plug-in like EPubMerge.

I forgot about FicSave.xyz, which is a website where you can enter in the URL and it converts it to ePUB or Text, which I’ve used several times, but I overall like FanFicFare plugin better. It is slow and tedious with multiple chapters and tends to stall out, but it can be used with livejournal. I’ve had much less success with tumblr.

Squee!book still works? Most of the time it stalls out for me, but if you can get it to work, it’ll combine multiple pages into one story and you can add cover art. It was designed specifically to work on LJ, so there’s a plus. 

Other tips:

The only method that I’ve found that works for comment fic (such as kink memes) is the Boom! extension to remove all of the surrounding styling and just a lot of coping/pasting. It’s so tedious though.

I love working with epub because of how easy it is to add cover art and how easily it converts to other formats. PDF has a lovely end product in terms of standard readability but is a beast to convert to epub or mobi and it creates a larger file than the epub.

This is super useful information. I’m a Calibre user, too. Over the years, I’ve perfected my use of FanFicFare, and I’m on a first names basis with the developer. The Anthology options are useful if you want to download a bunch of stories from a single author. You have the option to download them separately, or have the combined in an anthology (useful for those Advent fics).

There is a “Count Pages” Calibre plug-in that counts pages as well as word. I have this set up so that it automatically runs after the FanFicFare plug in.

For multi-chapter LiveJournal and Tumblr fics, I use good old Google Docs. I use the “Reader View” in Safari to copy and paste into a Google Doc. There is a Download As option in the File Menu that includes Epub and PDF formats. I noticed that with Epubs it’s smart enough to generate a table of contents based upon the chapters.

I don’t think that Squee!book works any more.

Thank you! This is very helpful! Also, maybe I misunderstood your comment about about changing cover art, but to change the cover art of a fic/book in Calibre is very simple. Right click the book, and select Edit metadata individually:

Then, as long as you have the art saved on your computer, you can change the cover art to whatever you want. Click Browse, then locate the art, select it, and click OK. That’s it, you’re done.

You are right that adding cover art to calibre is as easy as you outline above, BUT that doesn’t actually add it to the EPUB (or MOBI or PDF) file itself. 

My current project is downloading all of the Big Bang and Reversebang fics with their artwork. Photobucket has suddenly decided that it’s putting watermarks on all of the linked art, so I’ve had to fix several stories.
