I’ve been thinking about Hagrid.

Hagrid’s own time at Hogwarts was cut short when Tom Riddle framed him for a crime he never committed. He took up as the gamekeeper at Hogwarts after he was expelled and over decades saw students get to graduate — a point he never got to all because of a false accusation.

Hagrid was there at Hogwarts when the Marauders were running around the castle and grounds, and he was there when Lily and James began walking the grounds hand in hand instead of Lily slewing insults James’s way.

Hagrid was there when the wizarding world was in danger and saw the students lose their carefreee attitude because even teenagers could feel a war coming. So he joined the Order to fight for something he knew was bigger than himself.

After the war Hagrid sees those carefree smiles return to the grounds of Hogwarts. He goes back to what he does best, being gamekeeper of Hogwarts.

It’s just over a decade later when Hagrid meets young Harry Potter who reminded him so much of his father it was like looking at a photograph from ten years ago. And the three years that follow the day Hagrid took young Harry to Diagon Alley are ones that made him believe all was well.

But it was only four years after he took Harry to Diagon Alley that Voldemort came back and Hagrid knew all was not well. A part of him wasn’t surprised he was back but a much larger pet of himself was scared for the young teenagers who would have to fight a war.

After all, Hagrid had fought a war and he had witnessed what it did to the students at Hogwarts. It could take their lives and if not that their childhood innocence.

So when it’s seven years after Hagrid took young Harry Potter to Diagon Alley and Harry comes to the forbidden forest to die so that his friends may live, Hagrid lets out a cry of despair and decides that Harry is his father and mother’s son — selfless and brave until the very end.

It’s long after Harry defeated Voldemort at the battle of Hogwarts and Hogwarts was rebuilt as the dead were mourned at Hogwarts. It’s been years and years after the battle and Hagrid’s beard shows his age as the grey streaks grow by the year. When the children of Harry, Ron, and Hermione come to Hogwarts, Hagrid can only smile as they run around the grounds like their parents before them only without the worry that a war could be looming over them waiting to take their childhood.

Hagrid feels not only happy, but relieved. These children wouldn’t have to fight in a war like their parents did before, this Hagrid could say for sure. And that was was he had always been fighting for.
