What if during Ron's little tantrum in Goblet of Fire, Harry just flips his lid and wakes everyone up because he's ranting at Ron and his inferiority complex. So, if Ron wants to think the worst of Harry instead of using critical thinking, then Harry will bash him over the head with reality.
The 'woe is me, I'm so poor' thing doesn't work when you own your house, own an orchard, own a farm, own a chicken coop, own a vegetable garden, have multiple servings at every meal for a family of 7, never go without food, never have to pay bills, never have to pay for schooling, just the materials needed for classes, and the one time you had to buy new things instead of using hand-me-downs was because of a scammer.
Ron's parents are bad with money. I'm all for actual poor people getting a candy bar or buying themselves something they consider to be a treat, but when your children apparently need clothes and one needs a new wand or medication, maybe you shouldn't use all the money you win in a raffle on a fancy trip. How about solving the actual issues you supposedly have first before using this newfound wealth on luxury, hm?
This notion that Harry is a spoiled rich kid because his parents left him some money is funny af. We're talking about canon here. Harry doesn't have some grand fortune awaiting him. The Potter Family was not what it once was. There is no Lordship for Harry to inherit in canon. No mention of other vaults to his name. Lily had nothing for him because her family are muggles and James' dad sold his company and the rights to his fancy hair potions long before James was born. Whatever was left after half a century of not working from any of the Potters is what Harry gets.
And he can't even take a lot. There's always someone discouraging him from taking less money than they think he needs because people are nosy. He can't even use his own money in peace. Money he didn't even know about until he was 11 when he was given a certain degree of access to it.
Like, oh no! The kid with a loving family that owns their house and has no bills and no school tuition and who gets three meals a day with near infinite resources to have endless servings and gets Christmas and Birthday gifts and is treated with love and care from everyone at home, has such a hard life because his older siblings are all skilled at something and have each gotten a pat on the back for it and it makes him feel uncomfy.
And I kinda want a fic where Harry just rips into him after getting back from finding out he had no choice but to compete in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. I'm sick of Harry having to be kind and not address his own traumas because Ron's holding onto the Poverty and Inferiority Complex shit.
He can't be sad about not knowing his parents cuz there's a vault full of gold with his name on it. He can't mention wishing he grew up in a nice house because at least he has a lot of money right now. He can't grieve for the deaths of two very young people because MONEY MONEY MONEY.
The existence of money that is his apparently negates any of the bad things he's experienced not only in the minds of other characters but also people who read/watch the series. Harry gets called a spoiled jock when that's literally James down to the bone. Harry is so not-spoiled that he keeps losing everything with nothing to gain for it, and his one actual victory is over his killer after being used as a pawn in another man's game against said killer. He literally had to die at the hands of his parents' murderer just to win, and that victory came with so many losses it barely felt legitimate.
Give Harry an OotP meltdown a year and a half early and let him loose on Ron, pls and ty.
I know it's not actually related to HP, but that time in Here U Are in which Yu Yang gets called out on his bullshit is the part I loved the most. It's much more interesting bc the person who calls him out is the rich kid he looked down on all the time, and he seems the only one who sees through him is not afraid of reminding him how egoistic and conceited he is. Because Yu Yang thinks he knows how everything works, and there's nothing right but his own biased opinion about every topic and person he gets in touch with.
It would be great to have something like that for Ron, too, being called out by the most unexpected person. Someone like, idk, Neville? He's all kindness and awkwardness until he snaps and starts ranting abt how his ridiculous behavior.
