These pescatarian birds are directly exposed to PFAS contamination due to the island's position near the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Over fifty years of data show a peak in PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") content in seabird eggs in the 90s, followed by a decrease as regulations went into effect. The most recent findings show a 70% decrease of most common PFAS.
While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!
Environmental problems CAN BE SOLVED.
One of the most important things to remember if you care about the world is that the propagandizing of "it's too late to do anything about the environment/climate change" is coming from the same people who pitched "climate change isn't happening". They don't want us banding together to make good things happen.
Wait. So the Trump administration really cut funding to the program that would research and respond to the spread of New World Screwworm past the Darién Gap because they blamed it on climate change, and left the joint international program to Mexico and the Central American Countries... And are panicking now that it's reached Texas, and only now that the flies have already made it all the way from Panama to Texas are they building New facilities to produce the sterile male flies needed to eradicate the pest?
I'm sorry to everyone who lives on the entire continent.
America is Trump's pump and dump scheme. If he's not getting a third term then he'll break the country for whatever poor soul has to clean up his mess.
New World screwworm had been eradicated from the US since the 1960s, Elon Musk brought it back in a year.
Notably, DOGE cut the funding a few days before the US resumed imports of cattle from Mexico... the imports that had been suspended because of the screwworm outbreak in Mexico. So we've had a year of importing cattle from Mexico during a screwworm outbreak without monitoring the outbreak that we already knew about. Mexico's outbreak is pretty bad btw, and cases have been found not just in cattle and dogs but also humans. I assume the rest of Central America too. Not that many people seem to give a fuck about them ig.
In exactly the same vein, the department meant to deal with things like bedbugs...is now infested with bedbugs.

Australia's latest Federal Anti-trans bill
On Monday Nationals MP Alison Penfold introduce this private bill to federal parliament in an attempt to reshape the Sex Discrimination Act to target trans people while claiming not to target trans people
Helpful information Text of bill First reading: Text of the bill as introduced into the Parliament Third reading: Prepared if the
Transcript of second reading
Please help spread this petition far and wide for visibility The above reactionary bill was made in retaliation towards a trans woman winning a case in federal court against transphobes so now they're accellerating to hurt us all (Giggle Vs Tickle)
Hands off our Protections Our communities are facing some of the most serious attacks on our rights and protections in many years. Right no
Please sign that petition if you can, this bill is worse than it seems. Its primary purpose is to exclude trans women from women's spaces, including bathrooms, prisons, homeless shelters, and sports. It also cements transphobic, intersexist, and acephobic beliefs that are already somewhat present in Australia's law.
It is worth noting that this bill is being pushed by the National party, one of Australia's main right-wing parties. The party currently in power is the Labour party, our biggest left-wing/centrist party. The party pushing for this bill does not have the votes needed to pass it, and thus either needs to convince centrists to agree with them or are doing this to curry favour for the next election or some other goal.
When it comes to the bill itself, they are defining anything relating to one's sex in terms of the sex binary in a way which excludes intersex people in many ways. They also are changing the definition of sexual attraction, and the main change this makes is an exclusion of non-binary people in attraction. However, it is also worded so a trans woman lesbian is considered straight, and their definition also doesn't properly include asexual people. Those wording issues are already present in the original law, however.
They are also explicitly stating that it's okay to discriminate against transfems in women's spaces of any kind, including prisons, bathrooms, homeless shelters, and sports. That is the main change being pushed for.

Keep reblogging this please to help gain attention to the issue! Labor, the majority government, have been especially quiet about this issue while right wing media has pumped out tons of anti-trans political puff pieces while only one Greens member and one Independant member have spoken up!
Email or call your local MP if you can and tell them they need to publically push back and press them on the harm this bills mere existence is causing! Lately Labors silence on issues is not a good one and they are far from being functional enough for the people since doubling down on right wing policy. A simple reminder: Labor is not your friend, they're bought out and working for someone else
You can also email and call your state member, not just your federal one as if they get enough complaints they may additionally bother the federal MP on your behalf! Make noise at all levels of government!
If you don't know who your member is you can use this link to look up both state and federal members, just use your postcode or suburb to check.

Parliament is still sitting so you still have time to contact your representatives!
Two counter protest events have been made as Far-Right groups, Such as One Nation, attempt to coordinate across the country! Magandjin ('Brisbane') on 12th of July at King George Square! Naarm ('Melbourne') on 4th of July at Parliament House steps! In the mean time spread the word, make more posts about it all, email or call your MP and tell the community! If you're outside of Australia your reblogs are very valuable! If you're an ally then you need to get noisy and stand up for trans folk, make sure we're not the only ones talking about it
Love seeing stuff in the conservative groups with the alert "this post contains one or more links to a publisher facebook believes is wholly or partially under the editorial control of the Russian government."
Love that for them.
if theres one thing that really pissed me off from my 3 years of architecture i took in high school it's learning about how we used to have all these little techniques to maximize or minimize heat or warmth and now we just merrily abandoned all those to have the same copypaste style buildings everywhere that are often INCREDIBLY unoptimized to the local weather and climate so we can just throw more money at our heating and cooling bills
Right???
I recently saw a headline in a british newspaper about 'this one manor house has so many hacks for climat econtrol without hvac!' and it was just... "orient the building and windows to catch or deflect the sun", which is something I learned just living in southern california and having a bedroom on the west side of the house.
Most houses that are older than the McMansion boom are oriented to catch the most HEAT. That's why bedrooms are on the west and south sides of the house usually. Because people used to worry about the cold more than the heat, in most places!
I read a lot of midcentury plan books and most of them are still oriented in this way, despite saying the plans can be mirrored.
Colonialism has fuelled this idea of people ignoring the true seasons of their biome in favour of just using "winter/spring/summer/fall" for everything, everywhere. But that's not how all of the world works, and so that's not the environment we should build for in the desert, the everglades, the pacific northwest, etc.
Houses should not be commodities or investment portfolios. Houses should be for the people that live there, and should be anchored to THAT reality, that biome, and those plants and weather patterns, as well as the materials available in that environment. And we should make use of hills and build into the sides of them--that will regulate the temperature of our house much better than sticking it on top of the hill!
With a warming planet, it behooves us to build for coolth, not warmth; we should look to indigenous architectural styles from hot places for cues on what will help keep the building cool without needing expensive HVAC systems. Sinking the house down even a few inches into the ground will help cool it off, so will going back to using lathe and plaster and other "mud" building materials, building into hills, and being mindful of wind currents and using breezeways and window alignment to create breezes--my childhood home was like this and stayed surprisingly cool even in 100F California summers, because the breezeway was oriented to catch the south-to-north winds, and opening all the windows and doors meant it sucked the air through the whole house. The deep eaves of California-style houses act as awnings and shield the windows from the sun, keeping the house shaded and cool even without trees surrounding the house (which is dangerous in fire-prone environments like most of california!). Mud walls are extremely effective in desert environs, as well as being very cheap--and plaster is a kind of mud btw, so is stucco and adobe. All very good cheap building materials used in deserts all over.
At the Irvine Arboretum there's a museum house that was built and oriented so that a small breeze always circulates through the house from down to upstairs. It's amazing to witness!!! All because the builders used to care about that sort of thing.
Building codes are written largely to ignore environmental concerns in favour of just sealing the house up hermetically into this yucky box, and I think they need a bit of looking at because of it, because some times "updating to code" actually makes things worse. I am one for following safety rules, but the thing is sometimes you have to update them as you learn new information about safety--which includes the health of the planet and the humans using the building.
So much of what is “cringe” is just… earnest.
what if you made an honest expression of genuine human emotion and someone saw it!
hi i am crying. i love you trans women ❤
ID: a reddit post in the subreddit "mtf" by user @.apotatomassacre. "My 84 year old Navajo grandmother gave me one of her bracelets (that my silversmith grandfather made for her in the 50s) after seeing me as myself for the first time. It was one of the pinnacle moments of my transition and definitely made me cry.
i came out to my grandma at the beginning of the year over the phone. She really didn't (and I knew) know what transgender was or anything but this past weekend, we were able to see each other in person for the first time since i started my transition. For being 84 years old, the chat went as great as it could have gone! She caught me as I was leaving and she gave me a silver bracelet with turquoise and coral stones. She told me that this style is what Navajo women wear.
I was speechless as she barely learned what transgender was just minutes earlier. I cried for the entire drive home." End ID
@this-is-trans-joy absolutely heart wrenchingly joyful post
This is trans joy!!!
very suspicious about any talk of needing to base your politics on empathy. like any emotion empathy is very easily manipulated, and even besides that that is a meaningless statement. im sure plenty of white supremacists feel pretty empathetic about the plight of the white man or whatever
this has a name: parochial empathy, the tendency to empathize more with your "ingroup" (I.E. white people) than members of an "outgroup" (I.E. people of color).
the average bigot absolutely does possess empathy, they just don't consider oppressed people worthy of it.
not only that, but a lack of parochial empathy doesn't inherently result in fair treatment, as many people instead view oppressors and the oppressed as equally worthy of care (thus see anti-oppression activism as hateful or overly divisive) or simply avoid thinking about oppression altogether as to not feel bad about it.
this is especially a contrast I notice as a sociopathic narcissist (using both in the clinical sense), literally part of the two groups used the most by the "empathy = good" types to symbolize ring-wing violence.
I'm almost always the "naïve bleeding-heart lefty" in an interaction, regardless of if I'm interacting with conservatives or other progressives. people who shed literal tears over others' plights have become aggressive with Me over suggesting they should care about the "wrong" people or do something about it other than spiraling into self-pity.
I notice that the main difference between Me and these people politically isn't empathy, but how thoughtful our politics are.
often, it's people who believe that biased social conditions like empathy, the law, or the opinions of those around them are the best assessment of right and wrong who are the most susceptible to parochial empathy and the like. meanwhile, people who exercise critical thought about the aforementioned social norms--while not immune--tend to be more open-minded IME, regardless of their empathy levels.
I upset a few people in my intro to western philosophy class with this one.
Me being on here since 2012 and remembering Pizza, Sixpence, the bone witch, the Russian spies, etc., but somehow don't remember this nonsense:
Apolitically killing bandits and savages in my video game with no messages
asked the skyrim bandits why they were living in a cave and they explained the war effort has buried the economy so they can't find work and lost their homes. I use my shout to blast them across the cave and find a preeeetty nice sword among their belongings
Hi this reminds me of the skyrim quest I always think about constantly.
It happens during the whole vampire questline. It's not related to vampires. I may misremember details so forgive me for that. But you have to go through old dwemer ruins and you meet the last living snow elf in Skyrim. You know, the snow elves. Who were enslaved by the dwemer and went blind and feral and still live in the ruins long after the dwemer are gone. The falmer is what they're called now. Here's the last one who's in their original form.
And oh hey, to get to where you need to go you have to take a path that's an old snow elf coming of age rite of passage. And he's going to take you through it and you're going to learn about this dead culture, this culture that was killed.
And now you've got what you came for and there's one way out. Now that you've learned what the falmer used to be, where they came from, what was lost because of the dwemer enslaving them, you have to go through a falmer village.
It's a narrow canyon lined with huts. There's no way to avoid it, in order to get through you have to kill them. They attack you because that's what they do to people invading their territory. You're invading their village. You have to kill them or they'll kill you. It's the only way out. You feel terrible.
If you stop to loot one of the huts on your way out you'll find a book full of unreadable text. Take it to the winterhold college and give it to the librarian and he'll tell you that it's a remarkable find because it's evidence that falmer have retained intelligence. They're not just mindless feral monsters. They have this book, they've kept this book even though they can't see. They have a culture. Maybe they still remember what happened to them. Maybe that's why they're so mad.
You just killed so many of them. You're going to have to kill many more.
Anyway.
Video game with no messages.
murderbot and arts first meeting is literally so funny. like imagine you meet a biblically accurate angel and instead of being all 'be not afraid' it says actually you SHOULD be afraid. and then when you are in fact afraid it goes oh shit oh fuck. not THAT afraid, sorry. wanna watch tv? and then you watch tv with it and it keeps telling you to pause it when its favourite characters are in danger so it can calm down. and then it asks to do surgery on your bones. Asshole Research Transport character of all time
