Reading This Week 2026 #23

big audiobook week for me! listened to some book club books and then something that is spiritually a book club book because my mom wanted me to read it

Finished:

Blue Box, Vol. 20 by Kouji Miura, translated by Christine Dashiell i did not expect Chinatsu to just tell her dad that she's dating Taiki but it did lead to Taiki's funny "i am trying to impress and win over my potential father-in-law" bit

The City & The City by China Miéville, narrated by John Lee as a long time watcher for police procedurals, this was an really interesting read for science fiction and fantasy book club!

Woodworking by Emily St. James, narrated by L. Morgan Lee, Saoirse Ní Shúilleabháin, and Emily St. James really loved this. clearly a debut novel in a few parts that felt contrived or making it confusing who has their phone when, but otherwise i was so touched by all of the characters

This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews, narrated by Kristen Sieh read to talk about with my mom! i found it gripping even if it had some prose and dialogue pet peeves of mine (there's a literal "so that just happened" in it). i had a good time with it and then gave my mom some other isekai/portal fantasy recommendations for her trouble

After Hours at Dooryard Books by Cat Sebastian very sweet. i'm behind on my Cat Sebastian reading so it was fun to catch up. it is not a secret that this work of historical fiction set in NYC during the Vietnam war is about the present more than it is about the past, even if it does fill itself to the brim with little historical details. i found it gentle and very touching and i finished reading it while cuddling with a lover

gentle psa to new comic artists about a problem i also suffered from: slow quiet pacing is totally fine BUT if that's not what you're deliberately going for, you CAN fit more Story Progression on the page. no, more than that. more than that even. i promise if you don't want it to a single action doesn't need to take a whole page to illustrate each of its steps, a lot of connecting magic happens in the gutters i /promise/ if you draw someone pulling up in a car then skip to them walking in the door with groceries we will Understand that they unloaded the car and unlocked the house you feel me

#I am not a comic artist#but I had a similar problem when I was in film school#I call it “the door problem”#in my thesis film I had written that two characters walk out the back of the club into the alley behind the club#and my club location did not have a back alley but did have a side room that we used as the door#but that door opened in#and the location I used for the alley had a back door but that door opened outwards#and I knew it looked weird#I struggled framing the shots#and blocking the actors#and I got really really caught in my own head about how to make this door work#because to me it was really important that you saw every step from club to outside#because even though we had learned in school that you could transition it didn't feel right because it didn't feel like a new scene to me#(this being one of the struggles with a short film. It can all feel like one scene if your script is short!)#AND THEN#when we got into the editing room we just...cut the door transition entirely#initially not on purpose#what happened was that we decided to tighten up the timing by cutting non-linearly to the custom music I had commissioned#which made it much more experimental especially in comparison to my fellow classmates#however it showed me that the story still absolutely worked without needing to show how they got into the alley#the audience can infer the door#so now anytime I can feel myself getting stuck on something when I'm filming I think#“Is this a Door Problem?”#as a storyteller it's always a question of what is the absolute bare minimum you need to convey what you're trying to say#and sometimes that means you just need to already be outside the club

really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.

also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
